okay so my whole life i've always been just a bug catcher in every animal crossing game. i never liked fishing and have always been horrible at it. not because i'm too late to reel it in when the fish bites (which only happens occasionally), but mainly because i always panic and reel it in too early.

however, and i can't remember when i started doing this, but more recently i've been closing my eyes whenever i fish. especially in AC:NH, where the biting sound isn't as boopy. i just turn the volume up higher and focus solely on the sound. when i do that my reflexes are near perfect. i feel like spongebob taking his driver's test with a blindfold. does anyone else fish like this?

Yup! I’ve always fished by sound too - I agree hearing it seems to make my reaction way better than visually.

I could never do it with my eyes shut. I’ve been more into catching bugs anyway.

lots of people do this! I remember it being a common suggestion as far back as the gamecube games to help people who were struggling

I've always fished by sound, especially if I'm pretty sure it's an expensive fish. if I don't, I psych myself out and reel it in on the second nibble (which sometimes is the one where they bite which is nice when that happens, but usually it's not lol)

another thing that helps me is knowing that the fish never nibble more than four times, so if you've gotten four nibbles, that 5th one is definitely a bite

I do that when I'm bored sometimes, but what has always helped me for some reason is to only hold the controller/console with my right hand when I'm fishing, I'm not sure why but that has always helped me to focus, even when playing NL

yes, i've done this for years! the visual input is very distracting to me + makes my thumb twitchy and trigger-happy. i realized this method is even more fruitful in AC:WW because there's no bloopy sound until the fish actually bites. i agree that the sound isn't as bloopy in AC:NH, so maybe they're onto us

Yep, this is how I always fish. I actually take it a step further by taking deep breaths and trying to zen and block out extraneous sound effects while waiting for the bloop. If I'm bit mentally distracted it doesn't necessarily work. I also fall for the two nibbles in quick succession every now and then.

Wow I do this too!! So happy to hear that so many other people do this because my siblings look at me like I'm nuts when I close my eyes and fish . It just works so much better because I get too antsy and jump the gun when I'm worried about catching the fish but focusing solely on the sound usually always works.

That's how I've always fished. Ever since I first started the series when I was 12 with the GC AC, I've always closed my eyes and listened closely.

It's not especially convenient in that game (since fish hardly make noise) but it's come in handy for every game since.

I do this! I’ve been doing it since wild world because I was always too jumpy when I watched it.

I think it’s why I don’t like fishing so much on NH, the nibbles make so much noise that my brain has to go yes! wait no!no! Don’t press! And sometimes I’ve already pressed.

I like bugs, swinging your net around like an idiot and still succeeding

Me too, since Wild World. For New Horizons, while I was chasing the Cast Master honor, I would also tell myself, "Not until you hear the splash."
