okay so my whole life i've always been just a bug catcher in every animal crossing game. i never liked fishing and have always been horrible at it. not because i'm too late to reel it in when the fish bites (which only happens occasionally), but mainly because i always panic and reel it in too early.
however, and i can't remember when i started doing this, but more recently i've been closing my eyes whenever i fish. especially in AC:NH, where the biting sound isn't as boopy. i just turn the volume up higher and focus solely on the sound. when i do that my reflexes are near perfect. i feel like spongebob taking his driver's test with a blindfold. does anyone else fish like this?
lots of people do this! I remember it being a common suggestion as far back as the gamecube games to help people who were struggling
I've always fished by sound, especially if I'm pretty sure it's an expensive fish. if I don't, I psych myself out and reel it in on the second nibble (which sometimes is the one where they bite which is nice when that happens, but usually it's not lol)
another thing that helps me is knowing that the fish never nibble more than four times, so if you've gotten four nibbles, that 5th one is definitely a bite

I do that when I'm bored sometimes, but what has always helped me for some reason is to only hold the controller/console with my right hand when I'm fishing, I'm not sure why but that has always helped me to focus, even when playing NL
Don't talk to me or my 400+ sons ever again
And by "sons" I mean phones
yes, i've done this for years! the visual input is very distracting to me + makes my thumb twitchy and trigger-happy. i realized this method is even more fruitful in AC:WW because there's no bloopy sound until the fish actually bites. i agree that the sound isn't as bloopy in AC:NH, so maybe they're onto us
Yep, this is how I always fish. I actually take it a step further by taking deep breaths and trying to zen and block out extraneous sound effects while waiting for the bloop. If I'm bit mentally distracted it doesn't necessarily work. I also fall for the two nibbles in quick succession every now and then.

Wow I do this too!! So happy to hear that so many other people do this because my siblings look at me like I'm nuts when I close my eyes and fish . It just works so much better because I get too antsy and jump the gun when I'm worried about catching the fish but focusing solely on the sound usually always works.
Probably playing Animal Crossing right now...

Yes omg I even tell everyone in the same room to be quiet while I catch a fish. I even smacked(lovingly) my husband for intentionally distracting me while I was trying to catch a sturgeon. He owes me 10,000 bells lol. We are not violent, thats just our banter lol.

Yup, I’ve been doing it too! Idk how it took me until new horizons to realize it’s a good strat but it is. I’ve also found that if I need to have the game muted for whatever reason, just going by sight is better than both sight & sound for me (but eyes closed and only sound is best). I think the reason the eyes closed strategy works is because you don’t know when the fish is going to nibble, so you can’t pull up in anticipation every time it goes in for a nibble.
