Hey everyone! I have a mystery I am trying to solve! It isn't a very big mystery, but I've been wondering about it for 15 years at this point - ever since Wild World came out (though it applies to several games).

Basically, I'm wondering where the much of the art of seasons and characters came from (examples included below). I know they're official because you can see them used in some physical products Nintendo later released (like the this DS game case). They seem to exist for every game in the series, though the seasons from the Gamecube version are less pronounced. I was actually able to find sources for the seasons are for both Gamecube and City Folk, being in the form of desktop backgrounds, from their respective (now archived) websites. I also found a few Wild World characters from a special E3 promo disc. However, I've searched high and low, and the rest seem to be without a source. A few of the examples seem to point to Nintendo UK (see the comment on the wiki page for this image). Any leads are appreciated! With any help, we'll be able to solve this mystery!

Pictures I'm speaking of (links to wiki):

Gamecube
Wild World
City Folk
New Leaf
(No link for New Horizons yet, but they are already out there, just do a Google search! )

Note that I'm only talking about the villager/special character pics as well as the artwork of the four seasons (typically just labeled as spring, summer, fall, and winter). I found sources for most of everything else as, like this image being from an official wallpaper download from the Wild World website.

I can't give any specific sources for anything, but I know that it's a standard industry practice for a lot of this type of art to be made for promotional art packages, both for use internally and to give out to retailers and news outlets. graphic design teams are given a bunch of images to use, along with a design guide that explains rules for how they can and can't use those images. as such, most of the images don't have one specific "source", unless you count a design document as a source, since they'll get used in lots of places at the same time. (there's a good chance that whatever was on the E3 disk came from one of these documents as well)

character renders for the most marketable characters almost certainly came from one of those design documents and spread quickly from there, even in the early days of internet. character renders of the full cast of characters were still made for things like guide books, though I'm not sure how the older renders found their way online. I know all the character renders from NH were definitely from an image pack given to news outlets.

the large images depicting the seasons would make sense to have in a package like this as well, since they can be used to fill up a large space in ads. having images of the different seasons would be super useful to have, both because it shows off the main gimmick of the game, and also because ads can be made seasonally relevant

nintendo has also been making free wallpapers for nearly all of their first party games for ages. they gave them as digital rewards on club nintendo which lasted from 2003-2015, and still do it on my nintendo. my guess is a lot of the other larger images come from there

Oh wow, this is a lot of solid information! Though I did consider news outlets, I didn't think about them being part of a package given to retailers. That would make sense considering the earliest examples of most of those images come from news outlets and game shops.

And I didn't consider the digital rewards from club nintendo either I guess. I sadly never got to participate in it so I never knew about all the cool rewards until it was much too late. Thanks again for the info!
