I think I may be getting New Horizons for my birthday, I saw a text my mom sent my dad, and it was a link, and I think it may of been a link to a switch from what I read of it. So, if I get NH soon, what should I do first with my island?

if you're the type of person who likes designing, I'd say first thing you should do is place any new buildings on or as close to the beaches as you can. you can move them all later, and they're going to get in the way once you unlock terraforming. having them out of the way on the beach is going to save you a lot of headache

don't eat any fruit early in the game. it'll make you strong enough to break rocks with your shovel, which is useful later on, but early in the game you'll need those rocks for resources

hold onto any expensive bugs and fish you catch until CJ or flick come to town. they buy bugs and fish at 1.5 times the shop price, so it's a good way to make money. early on you don't have much storage in your house, but critters can be kept outside and stacked on top of each other

for the most part though, the early game in NH is pretty structured compared to older games in the series. there's always something you have to do to progress and tom nook will tell you what that is. it slowly gives you more freedom over the first several days, and by the time you can go everywhere and do everything, you'll probably know what it is you want to do

I recommend not to sell any materials. Regardless of whether or not you think you need them, you should store them. They will be useful later on.

Also, the color of your Airport determines the color of some of your Nook Miles items.

There are a couple online designer programs tat you can check out if you really want to get deep into placing items square-by-square. I found it really helpful even to just double-check to if you can fit things where you want without spending the bells on moving things and having them be one square too far to the side, lol

since you're into designing, you should know that the only things you can't change in your town are the airport colour, the placement of your resident services building and anything on or touching the beach (like rocks, river mouths and the airport location), so if you want to reset for a good map, those are the things to keep an eye on
