I am in the process of getting a new switch and don't want to start my island over! does anyone know if there are any updates on storing an island via the nintendo cloud?

At present no.  This is supposed to be possible in a future update.  Nintendo never said when...

thanks for your reply!
another question: would I be able to keep my island on the old switch and start a new island on the new switch? So that I can transfer my bells, extra DIYs, etc?

you can have an island on both switches, but you won't be able to play together with them. if you have a physical copy of the game, obviously it can only be in one switch at a time. if you have a digital copy, you can download the game on both consoles, but whatever one is designated as the "secondary" one will check online to see if you're playing the game on the other console. if it detects the primary console playing, it'll boot the secondary console out of the game

WHICH IS ALL JUST A LONG WAY OF SAYING, yes you can, but you will need somebody to hold onto your stuff in their town so you can come get it with your new player

If that's the case, what's the point of having a second switch with it's own island? Would it not work if one had the download, and the other had the physical copy?

I think if you had two switches, one game cartridge and one downloaded copy, you shouldn't have any issues (at least as long as the secondary one gets the cartridge). once I start on my "real" second town, I'm planning on ordering a physical copy so I can trade with myself, but I'd have to confirm that that would work first. OP seems to imply they don't plan on keeping the first switch though, so I assumed they wouldn't be getting another copy of the game.

right now I have two switches that share a digital copy, but the town on my secondary switch I only use to run experiments, make guides and help friends get villagers they want with my amiibo cards. I can't trade with myself or make other player accounts in the secondary town, but it's still a second town without the cost of a second game

I really wish that we could have both, a download and a physical copy on the same Switch. Buying another Switch and game seems a bit expensive just to play another island. Why didn't Nintendo make cartridges like they did for the 3DS?! Is it because this game is in HD and the 3ds was not? That seems to make the most sense, but feels very like having the Wii again since everything is saved to the console and not the game itself.

I have two switches (by accident, lol) and my secondary one has the download copy and my primary one has the physical. I find it works well for me, I can even travel between islands. Can't send letters to myself though....

I know Nintendo offers restoration if you lose/break your Switch. If you’re still working on this and don’t plan to keep your first console... maybe this would be something you could claim

my boyfriend let me borrow his switch for a few months while I saved up some money to get my own! it was finally time to give his back and now I have my own lite. I still am able to play my old town if I put the physical copy in his switch, but now have my new town on my own switch. Just sucks that you can't send yourself old items, bells, etc.
