This was taken from moderator Fli in the ACNH Reddit discord. It happened last night to someone inviting people over casual island visits recently when I joined voice channels.
"Please be cautious opening wrapped gifts received from players you don't trust. There are specific hacked items that people are gift-wrapping. Opening these wrapped hacked items will cause your inventory slots to be PERMANENTLY LOCKED due to a glitch. If you get a wrapped gift from someone you don't trust, do not pick it up. If you have already picked it up, DO NOT OPEN IT. If you have opened it accidentally, please try to reset your game before it auto-saves. As of now there is no known fix, and this will likely need to be patched by Nintendo."
jeez that's really scary, thanks so much for posting about it here to warn us. do you know if the gift automatically filled her entire inventory, or if it was already filled with furniture? ig either way she can't do anything now, that's awful.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
But good luck with that if life doesn't give you sugar or water.
Not too sure since I came late to the party. My only understanding it locks out the inventory when the victim unwraps the glitched item. If you do get a random wrapped gift after a save dropping it in a NMT island may be a way to dispose.
People say that if you were to gift to a villager, it wouldn't give you the option.
Hope Nintendo patches this soon. It sounds like a bummer.
I'm wondering if there's any need to worry about this in dream towns. since your inventory gets cleared when you enter and reset back to what it was when you leave, there probably shouldn't be any issue grabbing gifts in dream towns, right?

Right. It's just a blank item with no attributes -- some items cannot be thrown away (like fish), some items cannot be dropped (furniture customized with a pattern), some items cannot be sold (Gullivarr's phone or a lost item), some items cannot be wrapped (all of the above).
The problem is that people who modified their Switch can just edit the save file to put this un-used item into a wrapped present -- this allows them to drop it. Once a victim picks it up and opens it, then it's stuck in their inventory forever.
The quickest fix for Nintendo would be to just allow this un-used item to be sold or thrown away. Hopefully they do that.
In the mean time, if this happens to you & you open a present to find the glitched item, immediately close your game before it has a chance to autosave. Then, load it back up, and drop all of the wrapped presents in a single area, and move a building to that spot. This will force the game to put these wrapped presents into your recycle box, and then eventually they'll be erased forever once new items fill it up. This is the only way to get rid of it, since you can't sell wrapped presents.
I don't think so? I know the recent updates have gotten rid of some glitched items, but I've heard from friends there's still some that haven't gotten patched out yet so I'd say still be careful until someone can confirm or not
