Just like past games, hybrids are flowers that cannot be bought in the game, but instead are crossbred with certain flowers in order to create new colors. The flowers found in New Horizons are cosmos, lillies, tulips, mums, roses, windflowers and hyacinths, each with their own unique hybrid possibilities. Hybrids of the same color can also be bred in order to reproduce more of that same color. Note, flowers cannot breed if they are on the beach, so stick to mainland!

*A gold watering can is not always required per in-game research, but may make gold roses more likely to appear. **Hybrid reds are created by breeding purple and orange roses, but only 50% of these hybrid reds are able to make blue roses. The others will just make more blacks, purples and oranges.

*Disclaimer: Many hybrids require flowers to be fully grown from seed packets in order to spawn*
A method to set up your flowers is by using the criss-cross method, or by planting in X formations in order to get the most out of the flower productions. See below for an example on how to plant your flowers using a 3 x 3 grid:
X O X O X O X O X
X=Flower O=Empty spot
This can be increased to however size you want, depending on how big you want your garden to me! Any way works! There also does not have to be an empty spot between each flower, as below is another method you could use to help grow your hybrids:
XXXXX XOXOX XXXXX XOXOX XXXXX
X=Flower O=Empty spot
Getting your friends to water your flowers will boost the possibility of that flower creating a hybrid or duplicate flower. If you water your flowers yourself, you have a 5% chance of breeding flowers. Rain also attributes to only 5% chance of breeding. By having friends water the same flowers, the chance can increase up to 80% chance of producing a new flower. You need 5-6 friends to help you water to achieve this. You know the flowers are happy when they sparkle! When you hit the max percentage of possibly breeding a new flower, your flowers will sparkle with yellow and gold sparks as opposed to the normal blue sparks.
If you water a flower planted on its own, with no other flowers next to it, it will sometimes clone itself, producing a flower of the same type and color! This is handy if you have a really rare hybrid, like blue roses or green mums, but you don't have enough flowers to breed them together normally. Flowers of different types don't count towards the limit, so you could plant a rose and a mum next to each other, and they would both be able to clone. Gold roses can't be cloned, though.
