Hey all!

Is anyone else obsessed with documentaries? I usually always pop one on while I am playing New Horizons but I have exhausted my to-watch list thanks to Covid (I am immunocompromised so I am still housebound, boo!) and am in need of some new ones.

Please share your favorites, new releases, or just others you have enjoyed. I enjoy pretty much any genre (history, unique families, war, entertainment, medical, true crime, nature etc.). 18+ selections are fine which is why I am asking here on GG.

TIA!

PS: I already binged the heck out of Tiger King.

Hey Andrea!

Hope you the best in defeating the boredom, I totally get the housebound sickness! Here are a few I got off the top of my head. Some of these aren't necessary documentaries, but analyses of topics I found entertaining.

- National Parks Adventure ( Historical / adventures of the Natl. Park system )
- Mile, Mile and a Half  ( John Muir Trail )
- Free Solo ( Climbing the North Face of Half Dome )

- Chubbyemu's Youtube Channel ( Fascinating, and real medical cases )

- Buzzfeed Unsolved [Youtube] (Paranormal and True Crime cases)
- Pirates of the Caribbean - Accidentally Genius [Youtube] (Hilarious and perceptive movie analysis )
- "Attack on Pearl Harbor 1941" by Montemayor [Youtube] (Perhaps the greatest breakdown of this infamous battle)
- "How did the US Navy win the Battle of Midway" by Invicta [Youtube] (Amazing exploration of this battle)
- "Why Shin Godzilla Won Best Picture in Japan | In Depth Review" by  Up From the Depths [Youtube] (Movie analysis of Godzilla's fearsome return)

Thank you so much! Yeah, there's only so much walking around outside in my backyard can do for my stress levels. Haha.

I am adding quite a few of your suggestions to my list and bookmarks right now. We seem to have really similar tastes I am seeing which is super helpful because I know I'll enjoy your picks.

I love watching Chubbyemu's videos! I get excited each time I see he has a new video up because they are always fascinating.

Thanks again!

One documentary series I find myself coming back to is Chris Chan: A Comprehensive History. Note that this documentary can indeed be difficult to watch/listen to at times.

The documentary follows the life of an autistic man and his passion for his character, Sonichu (which is really just a fusion of Sonic of Pikachu). Several people over the years have taken to bullying and harassing Chris for being the way he is. It's really sad to see and I in no way would ever advocate, condone, or support that, but this documentary is very long and if you ever run out of other things to watch/listen to this might be a good one? I dunno, I find it interesting, at least.... as well as really sad.

Despite the manner of the documentary and the things Chris has gone through, it's presented in a very respectful manner on behalf of the man who made the documentary videos.

To OP: I watched "The China Hustle" recently on Hulu. It's very interesting, it goes into detail on how Chinese companies have infiltrated the US stock exchange legally, and then... That's pretty much it. I'm used to documentaries having a conclusion, such as Fyre Fest documentary, or historical documentaries, but this one just says "the problem is on-going with no end in sight". So if you're willing to get frustrated at how the world goes, then it's worth a watch.

I live in Ruckersville so I've had a few run-ins with Chandler, who now goes by Christine and uses female pronouns. She often goes to the Walmart, despite supposedly being banned, so I guess Walmart doesn't realize or doesn't care. Most recent time was late 2019, where she was fast-walking past the frozen aisles (where I was) and then ran out the door. She had a huge purse, so I half-wondered if she snatched some amiibo or something, but who knows.

I also see the Sonichu van drive around, but it's mostly Christine's mother driving alone, so I guess they only have one vehicle these days.

Back in 2016, I went to McDonald's to get some coffee, and the lady at the register asked if I knew about "Chris Chan". I said yeah, and she said that Chandler was in their store just a few minutes ago, and she couldn't believe her eyes, and wanted so badly to get a selfie. My older brother saw her at Charlottesville Chick-fil-a, one of my friends did an interview with her, and another friend of mine went to a "hobby & games" store in Charlottesville back in 2008 or so, and often said that she had multiple outbursts, before they knew she was a big deal online.

The entire scenario is sad, and I'd say even if Chandler quit the Internet for good (which I'd recommend), the abuse and ridicule will extend offline for years to come.

Sorry for the rambling, it's just something interesting that I don't see many folks mention, since Ruckersville is a pretty small town.

Wow, I 'm going to enjoy this thread haha *adds documentaries to my own list*

For anyone interested in gaming and the design of horror, I present this breakdown (Youtube):
Silent Hill 2 Historical Society Breakdown | Gettin' Super Nerdy [SSFF]

It's a spoiler to anyone who never played Silent Hill 2, but outside of exploring a particular segment of the game, the video brilliantly breaks down themes and reasons why horror works.

Gamer Maker's Toolkit on Youtube also has a lot of great deep dives into game design.

So these aren't necessarily documentaries, but I find them like bit sized info videos perfect to watch while playing AC.

lobobias:

Thank you so much! That really sounds interesting...definitely added to my list. I'll make sure I watch it on a day where I am not already emotional to begin with.

GavinGoneGlobal:

Ooh. Another doc. that sounds great and that I haven't seen yet - off it goes to my list. I also appreciate the back story about lobobias's suggestion. It's already sucked me in. Thanks!

Chuuster:

Right? I am really glad I thought to ask others on this forum for ideas! It's not always easy to find people who enjoy learning/documentaries as much as I do. I was that kid in class who would get excited when we were made to watch 'educational' videos in Spanish, English and Social Studies etc. Haha.

I am for sure going to watch that Silent Hill video. I love the series to death. It's pretty much the only horror game I have played that actually scares me and forces me to keep the light on the entire play session.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! To anyone else who might stumble upon this thread later on please do leave your suggestions as well.

Ah, right. I haven't kept up with Christine's Twitter in quite some time so I tend to forget her pronouns/name and stuff these days. It doesn't help that so many videos discussing her omit them, too.

Would it be alright to send a private message about this topic? I'd love to continue it but I don't feel this is the place for it since OP asked for documentaries.

If you're looking for some good short-ish videos. I recommend Biographics and Geographics. Overly Sarcastic Productions isn't formal, but they have some great content.
