I did not care for either of my starting villagers (Lyman and Tammy) in New Horizons, so I gladly let them move away at the first opportunity. In previous games, I was definitely more attached to most of the starting villagers that I had. If one of them ended up moving, it was probably a solemn event. Still trying to get one of my GC starters, Ursala, to move out of my town after all of these years.

Keep crossing!
I was happy to see Phoebe move out. I've convinced Sheldon to stay a couple of times, but he's starting to grate on me so I might not do so the next time he brings it up. It will just be a shame to be the only one left from the initial getaway package.
My starters were Kevin and Diva. I really like Kevin, but I didn't get along well with Diva.
After much patience in waiting for Diva to decide to leave but her not doing so, I ended up inviting Paula via an Amiibo card and just kicked her out that way.
Pashmina is too precious to leave. Hate her house, but still. I never liked the Jock personality, so I was okay with Roald moving away (even tho all he ate was donuts and didn't workout).

I have Boots & Katt as NH starters. Their houses are terrible but I’m keeping them. I like them both. I use to have a hard time finding villagers I liked in WW & CF. But then in NL I kept practically all the OGs through most of the 570 hours. Once they started giving me their picture over and over like x10 or more I let them go. If he hasn’t moved out during my inactivity, Del was an original in NL from day 1 release and I never let him move out all the way until I stopped playing in 2017.
Your first two villagers will remember they were with you from the very beginning. When visitors speak with them, they will tell them about how they started the island with you.
You will never have that with other villagers. I would at least keep one of your starter villagers. I did.
I was glad to see Rocket leave, but I never got her picture I wish Leonardo had his original furnishings, but I guess there is a charm to his ordinary design being one of the first islanders.

Keeping the peace for all critters and Animal Crossing villagers!
I wanted to keep at least one of my starters, initially, but I finally let my second one (Pashmina) go recently...
I got her final emote, she was never one of my favorites, but I really liked her a lot...But I just let her go recently after getting her emote, and ended up getting an all-time favorite of mine, Coco...
In past games, I'd do my best to keep at least one starter around, when we had a handful of them, or at the very least, one of the villagers that would randomly move in shortly after the town started...
In GC, I miraculously, after consistently playing for most of the Pre-Wild World span of time, kept my all-time favorite, Cookie...My current gf gave me a Cookie amiibo card recently, and I put her in my New Leaf as well, then I just happened upon Cookie in New Horizons without the help of the amiibo card...lol...
My favorite in New Leaf was Fauna, who moved in shortly after my town started, and I never let her go...I lost other really close villagers like Pietro and Dotty (Whom has been in every single one of my towns without any sort of plan since GameCube)...

I'm not upset at you, lol...
I don't have my starters Plucky or Cousteau anymore but I really really miss Cousteau. Luckily he's in my friends town so I can pick him up again if I wanted to
I never knew he existed and I'm glad NH introduced me to this adorable frog.

My starters are Hamlet and Renée. They are still here at the time I post this. I can't bring myself to let either of them go, our bond is tight as a finger trap!

If time is relative...does that make space a distant cousin?
So my starters for New Horizons were Rudy and Sylvia. I didn't really care for either and let Sylvia move away straight away. However, the longer I left it until I let Rudy move away, the harder it became. It probably took 3 months for me to let him leave, and I still kinda regret it
I'm so picky with who lives in my town/on my island so I reset until I settled on Mira and Mac who are OK. Mira moved right away and I let Mac move after he gave me his photo.
I started out with Phoebe and Tank. Somehow, even with getting the game on release day and playing daily, I still don't have Phoebe's pic. I think even after I get it, I will keep her around, but man, the houses of the starting two sure are ugly no matter how much you try and help!
Tank eventually became part of a trio of jock villagers on my island. The repetitive dialogue can be grating with just one villager of a personality type, so I was going insane having it repeated with two other jocks as well. I got so fed up that even though I loved all three of my jocks (Tank, Lyman, and Tybalt), I decided I needed to cleanse my island of the personality type for a while and let all of them move away.
