Chapter One - Leave It Behind

Maybe this man could be the one to save us. Or maybe he could’ve just not found the cursed land in the first place. Of course, the second wasn’t an option at this point. Being bound to the land, tied to it, their destiny tied to it, even his two sons would never be able to leave. But, maybe this man, could be the one to save them, finally give them solace. Turn them back to their very nature, or elevate them to a new status of being. Either way, it was up to him to decide if the man that stood before him was worth it. Worth the calling. And if he wasn’t, whatever gods are out there, better help him.

“Yes well, it seems everything is in order sir… Hamez… am I saying that right?” The young male asked as he continued to type on his laptop. The makeshift airport that they made for this occasion seemed to stand against the growing wind storm outside. The taller man nodded, “Yes, that’s right! Aren’t you a little young to be working an entire airport… by yourself?” He promptly asked, offering a small smile to lighten the mood. The world, and his baggaged-past, behind him seemed to fade away the longer he stood for the flight to begin.

A chuckle left the other’s lips as he nodded and looked to his left, catching eyes of his twin brother. “Yes well the work is easy and simple when you only have one plane and usually are taking one passenger.  Plus, I have my brother here for help!” The other brother gave a curt smile and repeated, in a small low voice, “I’m here to help!” He quickly went back to his own laptop.

Offering another nod, Hamez sat back down on one of four seats offered in the lobby, feeling the rumbling of the outside continue to push against the seemingly temporary airport station. His leg began to bounce with nervous energy as he looked at his phone once more. Not a single message from his former lover, his friends or even his family. It didn’t sound like they didn’t want much to do with him after what had happened. And quite frankly, he didn’t expect them to either. To him, it was a misunderstanding. At best, an accident. But to them, it was intentional, and real. As painful as it was to relive the memory in his head, he couldn’t figure out how it happened, what had happened. And more importantly, why it happened. He still didn’t know.  Thankfully, the two receptionists didn’t ask for a final background check before boarding the flight. He put on a good face for them, gave them some of his winning kindness and it seemed almost as if they already accepted him as one of his own. Strangers are easy to hide from. Maybe he won’t ever have to see them again after this trip….

Lost in his own thoughts, the man didn’t even hear the two speak to him at first. “Uh, sir. Yes, part of your package is picking your destination. It’s sort of a way of you making it your own experience.” In response, he got up from his seat, approaching the table again. Looking at the photos, he quickly picked one that made sense to him, going with his gut rather than thinking much about it. “Perfect choice! And what was your birthday again?” Quirking his head to the side, raising an eyebrow, Hamez didn’t know how to answer the question, except for answer honestly. Maybe for documentation purposes. “August 7th…” He smiled, “Any other questions?” He looked at the nearest clock, seeing it was almost time to board the flight.

“Oh no, no that’s all. Thank you for your patience…” One of the two young men said before scuttling away to the gate doors. “The plane is just about ready if you want to gather your things, Hamez! And don’t worry about your phone, it won’t work on the island.” He looked as sincere as a young man could, knowing how strange it was to even say something as absurd as that. But, Hamez obliged, seeing the phone as the last thing connecting him from his old life. So leaving it was the one thing he needed to do to move on. At least that’s what he thought he needed. He walked up to the gate door, and with one final breathe, he walked into something new, expecting a new chapter of his life to begin.

No. Not a new chapter. A fresh new book. Into paradise. That was the promise.

Chapter Two: First Steps

When there are only two people on the plane, and one of them was flying the plane, it became evident that small talk would have to be with themself. Nothing more than a couple words of encouragement and acknowledgement of the other’s person that it ended up being an inner dialogue on one’s past. And that’s exactly what Hamez did for most of the flight. Wrapped in his own thoughts, waves of regret and relief swept over him in small bursts. It was as if he wanted to go back but regretted thinking such a thing. He was giving everyone in his past the best chance at a better future, without him. And he was giving himself the best chance at a better future on this deserted island. A video had prompted and suggested where he was going was an island escape, full of creatures and wildlife and pure bliss. He almost didn’t want to believe it. Something that too good to be true must be either offering lies, not telling the whole truth or an exaggeration. Nothing is ever as it seems. And that’s goes for people close to you and so-called island getaways. But, sitting on that plane meant that he opted in for this escape.

The flight didn’t seem to take that long. However, without a cell phone on his person, always grabbing for the phantom vibrations of his pocket, Hamez spent most of the ride peering through the window to gaze on several stretches of water, a couple small islands here or there. Soon he was descending down closer to the water to find a rather larger island  waiting for them to land, a small airport with a couple individuals seeming to be waiting for them to land. Adjusting himself to finally take off the seatbelt, instantly his palms grew sweaty in anticipation of meeting more people. Already meeting the two young boys at the beginning of the day had already caused him to rethink the whole adventure. But now, meeting more people might allow for more anguish than excitement. But, knowing that keeping a positive attitude, rather than lacking the faith to know that everything was going to be alright, would helpful in this situation more now than ever. Nodding to himself seeing his reflection in the window, he was determined to make a good first impression.

Walking off after smiling at the pilot, he was greeted by two individuals clearly excited to meet him. His smile kept, hoping it seemed genuine and real, nodding at both of them but finding himself drawing his attention to what seemed to be the young boy’s father. Seems as though they got the island before he did. “Well, welcome Hamez to paradise!” The older man exclaimed, offering a smile just as genuine as he. “I’d like to introduce you to your other… companions on this adventure. Dom and Reneigh.” He gestured to the two next to Hamez, on either side, in which he turned to both sides and offered a hand to shake for both of them. They both obliged, but seemed as though they wanted to do more than simply a handshake. Resisting, everyone looked back at the father. “And I’m Tom Nook. And if you didn’t know, these are my two sons, Timmy and Tommy.”

“We got acquainted at the airport.” Hamez replied, not know if that was the appropriate response. There was a moment of silence, nearly awkward before Nook went on to continue the proceedings of introducing the island. “Let’s head over to the Resident Services tent and get everyone situated.

Walking through the untilled ground, feeling the fresh air fill his lungs, the sky and sea the bluest he’s ever seen it, he discovered what the video on the plane was talking about. This felt like paradise in the purest sense. The landscape stretched far, calling for him to explore each corner of the land. “It’s quite beautiful ain’t it?” Hamez turned to hear the male, clearly into fitness and working out, speak to him, seeing that Hamez was taking in the sights of the newfound island. He replied with a nod, “Yes. Like nothing I’ve ever seen before….” Wanting to say more, he kept his mouth shut, knowing that getting to know the other two companions would take a lifetime of conversations. But the desire to develop a kinship with both of them, Hamez felt at his very core. It seemed a fresh start was all that he needed.

What Nook described as the Resident Services area seemed to be a bit of an understatement. There was a tent and a board with a couple notes on it. Other than a bench, there wasn’t much else to look at. “Well, my fellow newfound paradise-adventure seekers…” A long drawn out name for something that didn’t need it was something that Hamez couldn’t help smile at. Nook was doing his best to make this experience the best it could be. “…I’m excited to announce we are coming onto new territory, island-dwelling at its finest! And I want to congratulate you all on your efforts and willingness to take on this adventure with me.” A round of applause from everyone caused Hamez to join as well, seeing that this is probably unprecedented for its time.

“First things first, we are to pick a name for our newfound land. Any suggestions?” A hush fell over the six individuals, allowing just the breeze to carry the conversation. Another pause before Nook spoke once more. “Well, I think it best if we all call out our suggestions at once. That way we all have an equal voice, how does that sound?” Everyone nodded in agreement, of course Hamez still taking it upon himself to be more agreeable than speak out.

Thinking about it, what is the one place in all fiction that didn’t get their proper justice? Feeling comfortable to believe that the others wouldn’t criticize him for his suggestion, he thought of probably the nerdiest thing he could say for an island name, hoping the planet with its namesake doesn’t conjure the same fate onto this island. “On the count of three…” Nook herald, “One… Two… Three!”

To be completely honest, Hamez didn’t know if anyone else gave a suggestion, but after Nook said three, Hamez called out, “Alderaan!” It was said with a commanding voice and the other’s seemed to take notice of it. It was a bold choice, to name it after a Star Wars reference, but it was fitting almost. The others around looked at each other, showing that they found their names almost to be inferior of the name Hamez suggested. “Now let’s take a vote…. All in favor of Hamez’s suggestion, Alderaan, please raise your hand and say ‘Aye!’”

A resounding agreement was heard from everyone. That was the first step in making that island a home for everyone, especially Hamez.
