Hello, I’m new to Animal Crossing and really enjoying New Horizons so far! Today a cute owl (can’t remember her name) who is related to Blathers came to my island. She told me that I could press R on my Switch to look at the sky but I can’t seem to get it to work Instead a keyboard comes up on my Switch. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Her name is Celeste. If you push the right joystick up, you will be able to look up into the sky. On very clear nights (no clouds at all), there will likely be a meteor shower. Villagers might mention there may be one if you chat with them. To wish on a star, you should find a spot on your island that has a clear view of the sky (I stand on the pier). Have your view pointed to the sky, and when you see a shooting star, press "A". The next day, you will find star fragments on your beach. Collect them; you can use these to craft items from DIY recipes!

Also, make sure you speak with Celeste. She will likely give you a DIY.

Also also, I love your username

Welcome to the world of Animal Crossing! So exciting that its your first game I want to mention a couple things that I learned while figuring out the shooting stars myself:

-You can get shooting stars on any "clear" night, but Isabelle will tell you in her daily announcements whether there will be a meteor shower that night. On meteor shower nights, there will be TONS of shooting stars! On nights where they randomly appear, there will only be a few.

-You can hear the shooting stars as they're going by. I know that I get impatient and want to walk around during meteor shower nights, so you don't have to stand still in order for them to appear. You'll hear a twinkling sound and that's when you'll know it's a shooting star! Then, you can do what others have said: push the right joystick up to see the sky and hit "A", and you'll make a wish!

-Make sure you're not holding any tools while you're wishing on shooting stars! Otherwise it won't count as a "wish"

-The star fragments that wash up on the beach the next day, come in throughout the day. You probably could have discovered that on your own, but I was surprised the first time when I picked up all my star fragments in the morning, and then saw more washed up on the beach later in the day!

Aww thank you! I love it but still getting my head around a few things Only discovered the other day that the little leaves you get when shaking trees are actually furniture! Probably missed out on quite a bit of furniture because I didn’t know!

I’ve managed to look at the sky now but sadly there hasn’t been any shooting stats in the last few days Celeste gave me a recipe for a magic wand when she came to visit and I’m really keen to try it. Fingers crossed I’ll get some shorting stars soon as it sounds so cute!

Thanks for letting me know about the star fragments, will look out for once!
