This story was posted about twelve years ago by a good friend of mine. It was never finished and abandoned and I decided to pick it up again. I made numerous changes including taking the narrative in a slightly different direction, omitted some previous characters and story lines, changed some arcs and added new characters.

The story chronicles the events of Tom Nook, Sable and Redd. It's the story about their history together and explores some of the backstory mentioned in the games. The falling out between Tom and the Able Sisters, and the mysterious Crazy Redd.

For the most part, it's been rewritten although the first few chapters have remained the same. I'll post the first chapter today and the second tomorrow. After that it might be a weekly post depending on how much traffic this thread gets. Let me know what you think!

Chapter 1

Sable

Today was just like any other day. Sewing nonstop until the late hours of the evening, while my younger sister, Mabel, aided the customers as a clerk. This shop was the only thing that our parents left behind for us aside from our home. They both passed when I was 15, Mabel was only a child, and Label was a young dreamer, who’s dreams also took her away from us. I never thought I'd be able to take the place of our parents for them, but it’s just Mabel and I, and I'm responsible for her now. I need to make sure that she’s on the right track. There was no time for me to dilly-dally, because I knew that, in the end, all this hard work would pay off.

I had just finished making a shirt. I stopped to admire my latest design as I held it and flattened it out, being careful not to give it any wrinkles. I thought for a moment and then decided to dub it... ‘the leaf shirt’.
I stared at it and thought of the future that awaited me in this village. Of course I was born here in Animal Village, but it only recently occurred to me that I had yet to make plans for me and my sibling. Everything was so care-free to me as a child, but after the death of my parents, there was something that hit me. Reality.

I didn't have much time to think, because just then, Tom Nook walked into the store. I could tell that he was in a good mood. He had a grin that stretched from ear to ear. Tom and I grew up together in this town, and ever since my parents passed, he has been like a big brother to me and has really helped out with taking care of Mabel. He knew exactly what he wanted his future to be like. He wanted to be the most successful business man of all time, and there was absolutely nothing that would stop him from doing it.
He trotted through the front door and headed towards me at the back of the shop, almost about to explode from excitement. “Sable, You wont believe this!” He said exploding with excitement. “I just got a letter back from Redd! He said that he will be ready by next week! I'll have to head on a bus to the city on Saturday. Isn't this amazing Sable? Redd and I are finally starting a business!”

I stopped and tried to break down everything that Tom just said, “Redd?” I said putting down the shirt. “We haven't seen him in years.”
“I know!” He exclaimed. “I can't wait to finally see him again!”
“Do you think he will be the same? I mean, he has been living in the city for quite some time now.”
Tom looked at me as if I was crazy, “Don't worry Sable, He’s my best friend! Besides, how much of Redd could have changed anyway, hm?”
“I hope so,” I said, “The big city can really change people.”
“Just relax, this is Redd we’re talking about. Everything will be alright. I promise.”
I tried to change the subject, “Here, why don’t you try on this shirt on.” I slowly picked up the leaf shirt that I put aside and slipped it over Tom's head.
He put his arms through the sleeves slowly and carefully. Then he put is arms on his hips, popped his chest out and smiled at me.
      I chuckled, “You look great!”
He came closer, “So do you,” he said. And with that, he took my hand, gently pecked it, and walked out of the store.
I quickly turned my head to look out the window next to me, to watch Tom leave. He strode over to the shore line and just sat there, observing the autumn sky. Then, after studying his leaf shirt one more time, headed out into town.
Mabel, who had been watching me stare out the window chuckled, “Watching Tom again?”
I whirled around startled, “Mabel, don't be ridiculous!”
I pondered on what Mabel had said. I knew it was obvious, but I guess I’d just been trying to ignore it for so long.

Maybe Tom Nook was more than just a big brother to me now.

Chapter 2

Tom Nook

The sun beat down on me on that beautiful autumn afternoon as I triumphantly walked towards my house, still giddy from the letter That I received in the mail. My dreams are finally going to come true! In exactly ten days from now, I would venture off into the big city to meet a friend that I haven’t seen in a while. Redd moved out of Animal Village when he was a teenager and I haven’t seen him since, but now I'm going to meet him in order to fulfill my dreams. In the letter he sent me, he said that he is launching a business in selling all kinds of products. I can already feel the bells in the palms of my hands.

I couldn't help but tell Sable everything. Nothing can describe how I feel about her right now.
When I told her about the letter she seemed, uneasy. I know, she wants me to be safe and to not get hurt, but I think everything will be just fine. I understand her concerns of the city, but Redd will always be Redd. Average Redd. She’s probably over exaggerating and I understand her feelings, but I would like to reassure her anyways. Once I finish this, everything will be set in stone for Sable and I.

I decided to postpone my return back home in an attempt to find Mr. Resetti. Mr. Resetti always has a ton of valuable ore underground that he gives me to sell to towns folk. He doesn’t need them, so he just gives them to me. I took out my shovel and went over to the rock that I go to everyday. With my shovel, I hit it once, twice...

“WHAAAAAAAAATT!!!?” Mr. Resetti popped out from underground and was furious.
“What makes you think that you can just go around hitting rocks? You’re giving me a headache!” he said while waving his pickaxe in my face.

“Hey Mr. Resetti,” I said trying not to laugh. “ have you got anything for me today?”
He calmed down, “Oh... it's you. Ya I got som'n for ya. Just wait right there.” He dug back down and I just sat on top of the rock. Pretty soon, he came back with three red transparent stones that glistened in the summer sun. “I got myself some rubies here... you can have 'em. He handed them to me.
I held one up to my eye, “maybe I can sell some in the city.”
“The city?” He asked, “why would you be headed there?”
“I'm going there for business,” I told him. “Im starting up a company with an old friend”
“Ah... the big city... I use to live there you know. Whoever knew that I would end up here.”
      “Really?”
“Yes it's true... but let me tell you, the city is a scary place”
“How do you mean?” I said nervously.
“I mean it's scary! Most people who go into the city never come back. At least not as the same person they were once before.”
      “hm...”
“But you have nothing to worry about Nook. You have a good head on your shoulders, and nothing can spoil it if you don't let it.” He picked up his pickaxe, “I have to go now, but I'll talk to you later.”
“Wait.” I said. “have you found any of those diamonds that I asked for yet?”
“Not yet, but I feel like Im getting close. I'll let you know when I find some. Now SCRAM!

Then he dove into the darkness of the hole and disappeared.
I sat there, contemplating on what Mr. Resetti told me about the city. The more I thought about it, the more it bothered me, so I just decided to forget it. From then on, I continued my walk back to my house. I looked at the clock that was on the town hall and realized that it was already 4:30pm. I had to get started on the agreement letter for Redd. I began to jog towards my house. It was a small house, with just enough room for me. I pulled out a chair, brought it over to my desk and began to fill out the forms for the agreement. At the bottom of the form was a blank space for my signature. I filled it in, and I was finished.

I strolled over to the town hall to have it mailed. I grabbed the cold brass knob, opened the door and stepped inside. “Phyllis?” I said as I walked up to the desk. “Why are you here? It's not even 8:00 yet.
“Unfortunately, Pelly is sick today so I have to take both shifts,” she said in annoyance. “Now hurry up and tell me what you want before you get on my bad side!”

“I would like to mail this letter”
“Then what are you waiting for? Give it to me (and don't try selling me anything because I'll slug ya)!"

I handed the envelope to her and quickly stepped out of the building. I had made the decision. I was going to the city, and now only time was in between me and my dreams.

Chapter 3

Sable

Twice a day actually. He would walk in, come towards me and ask if I was alright. Then, he would offer to help with work. I know that he has been trying to get my attention all week, but I keep rubbing it off. Pretending not to notice.

Just then, Apollo, the eagle, entered the shop. He must have not noticed Mabel, because he walked right up to me. “Where can I find some shades?” he asked intently.

I paused for a moment, “If you have a question, would you mind asking the clerk over there? I just can't let my claws stray from their work... I'm sorry!

“OK,” he said. “Sorry.” He then walked over to Mabel.

I tried to get back to work, but shortly after Apollo left the shop, Tom Nook came in. He came over to me as usual, but this time, with a different gleam in his eyes.

“Hello again,” He said with both of his elbows on the sewing table.

“Hi,” I said while reaching for a pair of scissors. Tom stood there, examining my every move. I tried to cut a piece of cloth with the scissors, but they were too dull, and just made an imprint in the blue velvet cloth. I became frustrated, and put the scissors firmly on the table, “stupid scissors.”

“Would you like me to help?” he asked sincerely.

We both held the scissors together, and began to cut slowly, but effectively. His hands were warm on mine. I can't believe I never noticed before. His fur was so soft, that you could have mistaken it for the velvet. It was a peaceful and relaxing experience, and I didn't want it to end.

Eventually, it did end, because we ran out of cloth to cut. “Thank you,” I said putting the scissors away.
“It looks like you need a new pair of scissors”
“I know,” I said. “I can never find a pair that are as good as those were.” I sat there for a minute, then suddenly, a huge burst of energy came out of me. “Tom!” I cried. “you can't go!”

Tom looked at me, shocked from what came out of my mouth. “Why not?” he said holding my hand.
I began to get teary, “Because... I... I...” and with that I embraced him in my arms. I didn't want to let go. I didn't want to lose him.

He hugged me as well and said, “Don't worry Sable. Everything is going to be alright.”
That night, Tom took me to the roof of the store. We discussed our feelings for each other, and how long they had been there. Tom talked over his decision to go to the city and why it was the right choice. We talked and talked for hours until 1:00am, when the sky was dark and millions of stars shone in the sky.

“I just want to let you know that going to the city is the right thing to do,” he said.

“I sure hope so,” I replied gazing into the night air. “I never noticed how beautiful the sky was at night, until now.” I stared at a cluster of stars, “ That one looks like a t-shirt,” I said pointing to a small group of stars. “I'll call it... 'Star shirt'.”

“What are you talking about?” he asked perplexed.

“Don't you see it?” I asked pointing into the sky. “It's right there.”

“Oh... I see it now.” Tom laid on his back and put his hands behind his head, gazing at the stars. He pointed his finger to the sky, pretending too draw something in the air, then said, “that one looks like a successful business building! I'll call it 'The Farmer's Market Bargain Bin Constellation'.”
We both laughed.

“Wow,” Tom said. “look at that star.”

I looked up and saw one star that shone brighter from all the rest. I glistened in the moonlight brightly, but it seemed as if Tom was holding it in his hand. I reached out for it, and took it in my hand. I held the star in my fist, only to discover a circular shape in my palm. I opened my hand and looked closely at the star. It was a diamond ring.

Chapter 4

Tom Nook

I woke up the next morning at 6:00am, with all my things packed beside my bed, ready for the big day.
I looked out my window. The sky was cloudy, and the air was cold.
Suddenly, There was a knock on my front door. I opened it, and there before me was Sable. “Come.” she said smiling “let's go for a walk.”

I quickly put on a coat and came outside to meet Sable, who had already started walking down to the beach. I ran to catch up, and we both sat on the shore, watching the waves crash upon the sand. The mist in the air was cold on my face. Neither of us had to say anything.

We both knew that I was leaving today. Sable didn't seem to be as worried as she did before, and as I looked at the ring that was on her finger, I knew that everything was going to be alright.

Sable finally broke the long silence, “What time are you leaving?” she asked, her eyes still fixed on the rolling waves.
      “In an hour.”
Sable leaned her head on my shoulder and shivered. “Please be careful,”

The sand was cold and so was the air. Sable got closer to warm herself up. I watched as the sea shells disappeared and reappeared with each tumbling wave.
As the water receded, I noticed a small hermit crab struggle a it made its way to a shell that looked slightly larger than the one it was currently inhabiting. The waves were rough and harsh, but the crab was relentless in switching over to a larger, more spacious home. As it slid out of its original shell, the wave crashed upon it, taking the small hermit crab with it.

"We shouldn't stay too long." I said as I shivered from the coldness of the mist.

It was 6:30 in the morning, and we decided to leave and collect my luggage to bring to the bus stop. I picked up both suitcases, but Sable insisted that she help carry one, so I let her.  When we finally reached the bus stop, Sable and I chatted for a bit while we awaited for the bus' arrival.
“So,” said Sable. “What's the first thing that you’re going to do when you reach the city?”
“Well, I have to find Redd first. Then he'll take it from there.”
“Promise me that you will write to me frequently,” she said with desperation in her voice.
“I promise,” I said clutching her hand.

Suddenly, a big yellow bus, which seemed to come out of absolutely nowhere, drove up to the bus stop and came to a screeching halt. It was time for me to leave. I took one last look at the town that I had spent all my life in, and headed towards the bus.

“Wait!” cried Sable from behind. She ran up to me and squeezed me in her arms. I then dropped my suitcases, and hugged her as well. Tears began falling from my eyes, and Sable began to cry.
“Don't worry,” I told her. “I'll be back.”

There came a honk from the bus driver, and our conversation ended. I picked up both suitcases and boldly walked to the entrance of the bus. With the two doors opened, I stepped inside. I greeted the driver with a friendly “hello” then took a seat in the front. To my surprise, the bus was empty. The only people in there were me and the driver. He then closed the doors and got ready to roll.

Realizing that I was just about to leave, I turned my head to look at Sable out the window. She smiled and waved at me as the bus drove off. As Sable began getting further and further away from me, I started to speculate wether or not I could go through with this. I waved back, and before I knew it, The bus had driven up a hill, and into a dark tunnel. She was gone.
“... Yar there, ye squidlet!” said the driver. “Do ye be headin' to the city?

I was startled by his sudden speech, “Yes,” I answered.
“Well then ye remember to smooth them eyebrows. Yar har har har HAR! Just a wee joke, sprat. Ye looked so peppy, I had to trim yer sails a touch.”
I gave him a smile and turned my attention out the window. We drove out of the tunnel and before us was a very long road. After about 40 minutes of driving, the bus stopped in another town. This town looked just as rural as the town I came from. Waiting at the bus stop was an old female boar who seemed to have a bag of turnips on her back, and a young blue and white cat. They both entered the bus. The Boar took a seat near the middle of the bus.

The cat came over to me. “Hello, my name is Rover, would you mind if I sit next to you?”
“Not at all,” I said moving my suitcase to make room for him.
“This may seem sudden, but do you know what time it is?”
      “It’s 7:40 am,” I answered.
“Thanks,” he replied while setting his watch.

Rover talked for a really long time. I began to regret letting him sit beside me. Ironically enough, I began to hear less and less of him until I could not hear him at all, because I must have fallen asleep.

Chapter 5

Redd

The rain was starting to pour down heavy as I waited for Tom to arrive at the city bus stop. It was supposed to arrive at 1:00pm, but it was now twenty after, which meant that we were twenty minutes late for a very important business meeting. Jerry Lungorio, our business financier, was not going to be happy. I could already hear him yelling at me, with my ears ringing in pain. The only reason he didn’t decline our request was because of his daughter. Her and I have this thing together, so she decided to ask her father if he could help develop my dream. It only took a couple of weeks of nudging, but she eventually did me a solid. Nook must be pretty thrilled that I snagged us such a great opportunity.

Fortunately I didn’t have to wait much longer, because just then, the bus arrived and pulled into the bus stop. I tried looking for Tom through one of the windows, and  spotted him sleeping with his head leaning on the window. Someone inside woke him up.
I went up to the bus as he walked through the doors. “Nook!” I said giving him a big hug.
He seemed surprised at first, but when he finally gained full consciousness, he smiled. “Redd! I almost didn’t recognize you!”
I let go of him and then I told him about the meeting. “We have to hurry,” I said while leading him to a taxi. “ We have a meeting to go to.”
      “Already?” He asked.
      “Yep... and we're late.”

We both stepped into the taxi and got out of the heavy rain. I told the driver where we were headed,  and we were off.
“So, what's new?” Tom asked as he placed his things on the floor of the cab.
“Not much,” I answered. “This is pretty much the biggest thing that has happened yet.”
I began to recall events about my past with Tom back in Animal Village. Those days were so exhilarating and wonderful. Sometimes I regret having left there, but then I remember what awaits me here, and can't turn back. How are the Able sisters?” I asked looking out the taxi window.

“Oh... they’re fine, hard workers just as they’ve always been” he told me.
“And Sable?” I asked turning my head to get a good look at that old raccoon smile I used to know.
“We’re engaged.” he said with a smile that he couldn’t hide.
“Good on you! I knew it was meant to be!”  I was happy for him, gave him a pat on the back and we both reminisced for a while.

Soon, we arrived at the Lungoriorio building, tall and magnificent in all of its glory. After I payed the driver, we both walked inside, entered an elevator and designated it to stop at the 44th floor.
“Who exactly are we meeting?” Tom asked.
“Jerry Lungoriorio, but it’ll be ‘Mister Lungoriorio’ from here on out” I replied. “He’s the one who’ll be financing our business venture.”
“Must be pretty rich,” he said looking at the gold plated buttons on the elevator walls. “How do you know him?”
“Well, I'm dating his daughter.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, sort of.”
“What’s her name?”
The elevator doors opened, “Gracie!” I yipped, trying my best to sound excited.
“You’re late, darling.”

We both walked to the end of the hallway, and came to a door with a metal plate on it that read 'Senior Director - Jerry Lungorio'. I opened the door and stepped into a room with a large oval shaped table in the middle. Seated around it was, our insurance lawyer Lyle, across from him was a weasel with a fancy suit and a sketchy smirk who was Jerry’s lawyer, and beside him was the king pin himself. Jerry was not happy at all.

“You’re late,” he said in an irritated voice.
“Sorry,” I said trying to sound sympathetic. “I had to pick up Tom.”
“Well, we better get started,” he remarked. “You’re not getting those 20 minutes back, so you better make good use of the remainder of my time.”

We took a seat next to Lyle who’s paws were clearly sweaty. Gracie went over to give her father a peck on the forehead.
“Oh please forgive them daddy, you know how traffic is in this city.” Gracie said as she went over to pour herself some tea from the refreshments counter.

The meeting felt long and tedious. Mr. Lungorio asked so many questions that I thought my head might explode from answering them. There were papers to sign and policies to agree to. Occasionally, I would look over at Gracie, and she would sip on her tea and be twirling a pencil. She smiled at me and I smiled back.
“Mr. Nook,” said Mr. Lungorio. “there is a license that you require in order to run this business. Do you have it?”
“Uhh, umm..” Nook started to stammer.
“Might I remind you fellows the license is mandatory!” snarled Grendal looking at Jerry for approval of his remarks.
I quickly jumped in. “-Yes,” I said. “Yes he does! He’s got the license. Don't you Tom?” I nudged his shoulder and looked at him.
He obviously seemed to understand, because he came with a quick, “Yes, yes I do,” as he signed the very last paper.
Finally, The meeting was over. Tom and I shook hands with everyone, then we left the room and entered into the long hallway.
“You know very well that I don't have that license Redd,” Tom whispered.
I smiled. “Just relax Tom,” I told him. “It wont matter once we’ve got the place and we’re rolling in bells.”
      He chuckled. “Redd, you’re Crazy.”
“That’s what they call me!” I said smiling. “Crazy Redd sure knows how to strike a good business deal.” Tom and I both laughed as we waited for the elevator.

“Darling,” came a voice from behind. I turned around to see Gracie behind me. “You did good in there,” she said. “Usually you wouldn’t be able to get through ten minutes of a conversation with Daddy without him yelling at you.”
“Well Thanks Gracie, I guess I was pretty good in there, huh?” I said. I introduced Gracie to Tom and Tom to Gracie.
“Well... I'll see you tonight darling,” She said, then she left. We stepped into the elevator.
“What are you doing tonight?” Tom asked me.
“I think we all deserve a little celebration tonight, don't you?” I said as the elevator door’s closed shut.

Chapter 6

Tom Nook

'Wendel's Premium Ocean Cuisine' was the definition of fine dining, and the prices were far too steep for my wallet. But we were celebrating, and what better way to celebrate than at one of the most fanciest restaurants in the entire city. The environment felt warm and comfortable, even in the cold, dark abyss of the bustling city, and the interior was a magnificent sight. Paintings of all different patterns and colours were hung up all over the walls, each one unique and divergent. There was one that looked like a stop sign, and one that looked like a tree, but the thing that all the paintings had in common was the signature in the bottom right corner that read 'Wendel'. I've never felt more out of place sitting in such an elegant establishment.

But I suppose I better get used to it if I'm going to make it big in the city. Observing the art on the walls reminded me of Sable, and her passion for creating new designs.

I never thought that I could do so much in one day. One second I'm coming off of a bus to go to the most important business meeting of my career, and the next, Im celebrating at a five star restaurant with a friend whom I haven't seen in over a decade.

Redd was sitting at a table, in the middle of the room, talking with gracie, while Lyle and I both sat at the bar. Looking back at Redd, I noticed that he looked a bit dizzy, and overly excited. I pulled one of my suitcases up onto my lap and opened it. Inside, were my clothes, some toiletries and the three rubies that Mr. Resetti had given me back in Animal Village.

"What's that? Looks pricey." asked Lyle as he gazed into the suitcase.

"Rubies." I said handing him one to look at. "They're from my home town."

"You could get quite a bit of money for these. Big bells. I'm talking big." he said as he handed the Ruby back.

"That's the plan."

"Well, good luck with that." he said.

Gracie walked up to the bar and sat down beside me. "Hey darlings," she said.

Lyle put his drink to his mouth and looked a little shifty as he scanned the restaurant.

I took a swig of some fizzy peach drink, and gave Gracie a smile. She didn't really strike me as the type of person Redd would have courted. Time's have changed and I suppose tastes do as well.

I looked back to see Redd, but he was not there. "Where's Redd gone to?" I asked.

"He didn't feel too well, so he went to the restroom. He'll be back soon."

She stopped and caught a glimpse of the ruby that was in my hand. "What is that beauty you have there?" she asked, watching it sparkle.

"Oh," I said holding up the Ruby. "Merchandise. It's up for sale. You interested?"

"No," she answered still looking at the glistening stone. "It sure is pretty though."

I put the rubies back into my suitcase, and placed it on the ground. "I'll go check on Redd and make sure he's okay," I said walking towards the restroom doors. "I think I have some business of my own to attend to anyway."

She laughed as she took my seat and began chatting with Lyle who was still scanning the room.

I chuckled, then slowly opened the door that lead to the washrooms. Inside was a sink and two stalls. The place was surprisingly clean for a washroom. I knocked on the first stall. "Redd!" I called. "Are you alright?" I could hear him throwing up and heaving into the toilet bowl on the other side.

He took deep breathes before speaking. "Ya, everything is fine. Just peachy. I'll be out in a--" He let the toilet have it again, " I think it was the caviar."

"Well, I think it was too much of that fancy fizzy pop." I said with a chuckle. "I'll be waiting for you outside, so we can head out."

I walked out of the bathroom and back to the bar. Gracie was gone, and Lyle was sitting alone. I took my suitcase and we tipped our waiter.

Just then, Redd came out of the washroom, looking sick and dizzy. "Well, we can go now," he said. "Where's Gracie?"

"Had to leave. Something about an early morning. Took a cab." Said Lyle in his usual shifty tone, he was wiping his shirt with a napkin and mumbled something about his shirt being brand new.

"Here's some more of those napkins, the fizzy drink should wash out no problem." said the bartender as he handed Lyle a handful so he could continue cleaning his shirt.

Lyle looked at Redd and I, "Just a soda accident. Nothing to see here. Bloke bumped into me with his drink. No biggie."

"Oh, well alright then. Let's head home." I said looking at Redd to make sure he wasn't gonna be sick again. I picked up my suitcases and exited out of the building and into a taxi.

"I've got my own ride! See you two later. Good job today lads." Lyle said as he waved and walked up the road into a valet parking lot.

"Where are we going?" I asked Redd, "What's the address?"

"The apartment on Serene St. the one with the yellow flashy lights." He answered, dozing off.

I informed the driver of our destination, and we were off.

The city seemed like a completely different place at night. Chaotic cluster and motion did not change at all. As a matter of fact, everything seemed to be more active. The lights were bright, and the streets were noisy with countless vehicles. Hoodlums stood in groups on corners, and the sound of police sirens could be heard in the distance. As I watched the hustle and bustle out my window, I wondered "How could someone live in such a place?"

We soon came to the apartment building, and walked in after paying the driver. We entered an elevator and went to the 9th floor, where our apartment was. On the very top of the number pad was a button that read "PENTHOUSE".

"It sure would be great to live up there," I thought as the elevator lifted us up to the 9th floor.

We came to the door of our apartment. Redd unlocked it with his key, and we stepped inside. The place was small, but cozy, with a mismatch of furniture and decorations.

Redd walked into his bedroom and hit the sack right away. I went into, what was supposedly my bedroom, and found a desk with a lamp. I sat by the desk, opened my suitcase, and pulled out some lined paper and a pen. I began writing a letter to Sable, about my first day in the city. It was hard trying to tell her my first impressions of the city and of the new people I had met, but I managed to do it anyways. I looked out the window beside me and searched the sky. There were barely any stars in the sky, but I could faintly make out the "star shirt" constellation. While I wrote the letter, I occasionally stopped to look at the constellation, to remind myself of Sable and Animal Village. Every time I gazed at it, it gave me hope.

Remembering the diamond ring I gave her, I reached into the suitcase to pull out one of the rubies. To my shock, they weren't inside. I emptied the entire suitcase. I'd turned the room upside down creating such a mess, and I came to the horrible realization that the rubies weren't just missing, they'd been stolen.

Chapter 7

Sable

I could not wait for the letter to reach my mailbox, so I rushed over to the town hall, as soon as I woke up, to retrieve it. The letter was short and to the point, but it still warmed my heart:

“Dear Sable,

It hasn’t even been a day since I last saw you, and I’m already missing you. My first day in the city was a rough one, but I was able to make it through. As soon as I came off of the bus, I met up with Redd, and we both headed over to a business meeting. The meeting was long and grueling, but it was all necessary to get our business up and running. Yes, yes, as you can see, I am very excited.

It is very late, and this letter may be very short, but I want you to know that I am thinking about you, regardless of the fact that we are miles apart. Two hundred miles away from each other could not change the way I feel about you. Two thousand miles couldn't change that.

-Yours truly, Tom.”

I held the Letter to my heart and smiled. I was happier than ever for Tom now. He was out in the city chasing his dreams and reaching them. Determined and confident that it would settle his future.

Tom was following his dream alright, but what about me? My main concern has been and always will be Mabel. So I’ll remain here and work as hard as I must to take care of her. But might there be something even greater for me that I have not seen yet?

I thanked Pelly for the letter and walked out of the hall into the summer air. I needed to get back to the shop before it opened, or there would be some angry customers. I walked into The Able Sisters and strode over to my usual sewing area. I sat down and rummaged through some designs Mabel had drawn up for me. I took a piece of cloth, ready to unleash my imaginative abilities, but then I realized that Mabel was nowhere to be seen.

Where could she be? She should have been here by now. I just began sewing, and decided to forgot about it. She was probably on her way.

An hour went by and there was still no sign of Mabel. Customers came in and out, making their purchases, and I had to be the one cashing them out. I wasn’t able to finish a single design because any time I sat down to get started, another customer would call for my assistance. Eventually, I gave up on sewing entirely for the day and just worked as the clerk, taking Mabel's place.

As the hours went by I began to worry. Mabel never missed work unless she was ill. She seemed fine this morning when she hit the snooze on her alarm before I left to open the shop.

I held the Closed sign and bumped into Mr. Resetti. “Oh! Sorry, I was just about to-”

“I need a new work helmet!” He said walking passed me, oblivious to the Closed sign I was holding in my hands.

“Um.. okay let me just quickly check the back for you, I’m actually closing up early today” I said as I placed the sign on the door.

“This can’t wait! It’s important! I busted up my trusty hat and can’t get to digging without a proper one!” he said as I pulled out some old dusty boxes.

As I opened it up, dust flew into my face, causing me to sneeze.

I pulled out a bright red work hat from the box. I walked back over to where Mr. Resetti stood impatiently, and handed him the hat.

“Well, I prefer the yellow ones, but this will have to do,” he said reaching for it and handing me a small bag of bells. As he took the hat, he stopped and stared at my hand. “That's a pretty nice diamond you have there on ya.”

“Oh,” I said holding the back of my hand up to my face. “Tom gave it to me.”

“So that was the reason” he said scratching his chin.

“What do you mean?”

“Everyday, the young lad would come and ask me if I had any diamonds. It annoyed the living guts out of me. But I suppose he put it to good use!”

I smiled.

“Anyways,” he said putting the red hat on his head. “I have to go. Those rocks aren’t going to smash themselves!” he headed toward the door. And with that, he dug into the ground and disappeared. I could hear a low humming sound as he traveled beneath the shop. The sound slowly disappeared into silence.

I locked up the shop and scurried home as quickly as I could. To my dismay she wasn’t in her bedroom. She wasn’t home at all. She wasn’t on her way to the shop either because I’d just taken the main route and would have passed her.

I put on a light jacket and set off into town to look for her. My heart began to beat faster and faster as I ran around town, asking villagers if they’d seen her anywhere.

Pretty soon the day came to an end and the sun was setting. My heart was sinking deeper down into my stomach as the sun inched down below the horizon. All I could think about was that night our parents passed. It was the three of us, I was the eldest. Mabel was too small to remember. I was so afraid, but I couldn’t let my younger sisters know that. Perhaps I wasn’t a good enough caretaker. Maybe that’s why Label left as a teenager, and maybe that’s why Mabel was gone now too. I felt like such a failure, an overwhelming sense of disappointment filled my heart. Mabel was missing and I was a careless sister to not notice her absence first thing in the morning. I’ve let both my sisters down. Label stormed off into the city, and now Tom is gone too. The same city that took my sister from us has taken the kindest man I’ve ever known as well.

The diamond ring on my finger glistened in the sunset as I wiped my tears away. Was Tom really gone for good? I’ve never felt so alone.

Just then someone approached me.

It was Mabel.

She was walking from the beach, covered in sand and was holding a shovel which she carefully lay on the ground.

“Mabel!” I yelled and gave her a tight hug, the kind where you never want to let go.

“I went fossil hunting,” she said nervously.

“You were supposed to be at work today, I was worried sick!”

She shuffled, “Im sorry,” she said staring at the ground. “today was supposed to be a vacation day. I thought you remembered.”

“Vacation day? Oh my goodness!” I gave her another tight squeeze. “Mabel, I’m so sorry. Today is your birthday. How could I have let it slip my mind”

“You’re always working so much” Mabel said picking up her shovel, “I didn’t want to bother you from the shop.”

“I made a promise, do you remember my promise Mabel? That I would always look after you. I work hard to make sure I can keep that promise. But it seems like there’s more to it than just working. You’re right, I need to take it easy and not work so hard all the time. How about we stop by the bakery and have ourselves a little picnic on the beach, and you can show me what you’ve dug up today?”

Mabel smiled and jumped excitedly.

We enjoyed some birthday cake and peach juice on the beach watching the sunset as Mabel showed me all the little fossil’s she’d found that day.

Later that night I changed into my Pjs and snuggled myself into the soft sheets that my mother made for me when I was a child.

I turned on a lamp and read Nooks letter for, what seemed to be, the umpteenth time. Every time I read it, it brought a sense of hope to my spirit and joy to my soul. I thought and wondered whether Tom's pure spirit would survive in this crazy world. But, deep down in my heart, I knew that he would never change and that everything would be alright.

I reached for my lamp and switched it off. I watched as shadow took over the room making the objects in my room disappear. "Please keep Tom Nook's pure spirit protected.," I whispered to the darkness.

"Keep him safe from the apathy that breeds in the alleys of the big city..."

Chapter 8

Tom Nook

It was coming for me! I had to make a run for it before it was too late! The bridge! Yes, yes the bridge! I could make it! I dashed over as quickly as my little Racoon legs would take me. I looked back, knowing I shouldn’t have. It was still hot on my trail, a giant gloved hand floating in the air, coming to steal my bells, my hard earned bells. Trying to steal my jewels, my diamonds my--”

I jolted out of bed, “--my rubies!”

It was a dream. Well, half a dream anyway. My rubies really were gone. I’d spent years collecting the precious stones from Resetti, keeping only the largest and most shiniest of them.

I’d carried them all with me here into the city in my suitcases. How could I have carelessly left my suitcases unattended. This never would have happened back home, back in Animal Village.

I looked out the window. It was looking pretty gloomy. I wonder if Sable was looking out at the same rainclouds. Or maybe it was sunny back home. Maybe she was putting on the kettle and preparing her morning tea and toast with jam. No. It was 9 in the morning. She would have been at her shop by now preparing for the day ahead of her.

I stepped out of the room and took a peak into Redd’s room. His door was all the way open and he was still sleeping, fully clothed over his bed sheets.

I helped myself to the fridge and got some breakfast, made myself a coffee and sat at the table resting my face in my palms, trying to think where the rubies could have gone. This wasn’t how my trip to the city was supposed to go. Things really were different here. The coming days were going to be busy getting our establishment running before grand opening day, which was only in a few weeks.

I heard Redd walk out of his room and into the kitchen.

“Good morning Tom, how’d you sleep?” he asked with a yawn.

“I slept well, I suppose. To be honest something happened last night and it’s got me all stressed out.” I said taking the empty dishes to the sink.

“What’s the problem, cuz’?” he poured himself a cup of coffee.

“The rubies I brought over from Animal Village, they’ve gone missing.”

Redd almost choked on his gulp of coffee. “That’s not good. That’s not good at all. In fact very bad. Are you sure you checked both suitcases?”

“The last time I had them was at the restaurant, I was showing Lyle and then Gracie came over to chat and shortly after I put them away. I was unpacking last night and that’s when I noticed they were missing!”

“We came straight to my apartment after the restaurant, did you open the suitcase in the taxi?”

“No, it was sealed shut before we left the restaurant.”

“Well buddy this is awful timing. We’ve got a lot of work to do before the grand opening, Jerry’s got his boys stocking the store up now and we’ll be expected to help over the next few weeks. Gracie’s been on my tail about getting closer with her pops and if I want her inheritan-- I mean if I want her to be happy I’ve got to put in the work!” Redd said dumping the rest of his coffee down the sink.

“Who else knew about the rubies?”

“You, Lyle and Gracie.”

“Alright then leave it to me, I’ll call Gracie and I’ll give Lyle a call as well. I’ll handle it, cuz’” He said with a wink.

“I’ll meet you at Jerry’s office when you’re ready.” Redd left out the door and I went back to my room to get ready.

When I arrived at Mr. Lungorio’s office building I saw Gracie exiting the building. I couldn’t help but remember the look on her face when she saw the ruby in my hand.

She waved at me, “hello...Tim was it?”

“It’s Tom actually. Hey if you have a second I wanted to ask you a quick question.”

“I don’t really have a second actually, I’m quite busy, you know life of an aspiring entrepreneur.” Gracie said putting on her sunglasses and getting ready to walk right passed me.

“It’s about last night, those rubies I showed you and Lyle. I can’t find any of them and I was wondering if you knew anything about that?”

Gracie stopped in her tracks and slowly took her sunglasses off. She turned her head to face me. “I beg your pardon?”

“I thought maybe you could help me find out what happened to--”

“Why would I know anything about your silly rubies!? You said yourself you showed them to Lyle, that sleazy lawyer of yours always sweating and looking around suspiciously, ask him! Not me! Why would I want anything to do with your foolish stones!?” She was quite offended.

“I”m sorry Gracie, I’m just trying to--”

“What you should be doing is going up to daddy’s office and lifting your weight with all the daily responsibilities of your precious little business establishment! Not accusing me of such nincompoopery!” She put her sunglasses back on and strutted away angrily.

Redd was sitting in one of Jerry Lungorio’s many office spaces. I didn’t tell him about offending Gracie as to not upset him, so instead I sat with him and proceeded to complete some paper work. I worked on my share of duties regarding the store we’d be opening.

Redd had the crazy idea of selling pieces of art. I don’t know a thing about art, and I have a hunch neither does he judging by the letters he’d written me. I figured we could make it work. We would include a gift shop and I would sell some of my rubies there. Of course, now they’re all gone. The only thing we have left for the gift shop are small trinkets and knick knacks from one of Redd’s suppliers. I took a look at them as we discussed the new store and they didn’t look as high quality as he’d made them out to be in his letters.

After a busy day doing numerous tasks for our new business, Redd gave Lyle a call. He put him on speakerphone:

“Rubies gone missing you say? Hmm. Bad news. No idea. What I can say is it probably went missing inside Wendell’s place. I had bad vibes from the moment we got there. Felt like we were being watched. Spied on. Yep. Across the bar. Couldn’t tell for sure. Bloke with a pair of aviator shades and a baseball cap.”

“How come you didn’t mention you’d seen something strange before, Lyle?” I asked.

“Too embarrassed. He got up. I got up. We bumped right into each other. Got fizzy pop all over my shirt. Brand new too. Still can’t get the stain out. I couldn’t let you two ridicule me so I kept it hush hush. Just a simple accident.”

Redd hung up and we went straight to Wendell’s Premium Ocean Cuisine. We spoke to the restaurant's management team and after a few minutes they lead us into the security room.

That’s when I saw him. The bloke with aviator shades and a baseball cap that Lyle had mentioned. Yep, they bumped into each other just like he said, except this was no simple accident. Lyle had beverage all in his face and this suspect bent down and fiddled with my suitcase! The angle was slightly off and the footage was grainy, so it would be hard to figure out who this was.

The management let us take the footage to the local police station. I thought maybe now was a good time to tell Redd about upsetting Gracie, but maybe it’d be best to apologize to her on my own without getting Redd involved.

“Well here it is” said Redd as we arrived at the Animal City Police Station.

We filled out some papers and waited a while for an officer to speak with us. I handed them the footage and went over what happened numerous times with a few different officers. They finally told me they’d give me a call if they found anything.

I pray that they do.

Chapter 9

Redd

The day was finally here: the store's grand opening. It seemed as if the entire population of Animal City had gathered to witness the grand opening of our very first business establishment. The air was filled with excitement, almost making the chilly autumn air feel like summer again. The establishment was something we had been organizing and planning to create for quite some time, but with the help of Mr. Lungorio, Lyle, and Tom, we were able to pull through to the end.

Redd & Jerry's Art Emporium. Nook didn't approve of the name but one of the conditions for Jerry's financing was that his name be in the title, and Tom & Jerry was already taken.

This place was a glorious wonderland filled with high end art, accompanied with high end prices. The art may not have been totally legit, but hey, what the people didn't know couldn't hurt them. It's all paint on canvas anyway!

It was going to take more than a few hundred bells to afford anything from this store! Tom kept saying that the prices were too high, but little did he know the kind of customers this place would attract. Only the wealthiest of the city's inhabitants would shop here. When he saw the great crowd of people who had gathered, I saw a gleam in his eye that I had never seen before. "You didn't think it would get this busy?" I asked smiling.

"No," he answered. "I knew it would be big, but this is bigger than I imagined." he said with a large smile and bells in his eyes.

"Well, we better get up there." And with that, we sauntered over to where Jerry stood next to his daughter, at the front doors of the store. Jerry held a large pair of scissors in his hands, behind the bright red ribbon which signified the opening once it had been cut. I stood beside Gracie posing for the pictures everyone was taking. Jerry slowly snipped the ribbon in two.

It was an extremely busy day. Customers came in and out purchasing different pieces of art. Some statues, some paintings, big, small, landscape, portrait. Were they all authentic? Maybe. Maybe not. The only thing that mattered was that our register was full, because that meant so was my bank account!

The day was over and it was closing time.

"Looks like this was a big hit! I must say you surprised me today." said Jerry as he patted my shoulder.

We've only just opened the store but I could already see it: promotion, promotion, promotion. I hit the jackpot with Gracie, when I found out her father was Mr. Lungorio I couldn't help myself. It's been a hard couple of years living in the city but everything's finally paying off. And if Nook can get a piece of the pie then that's great too.

"I was expecting a colossal disaster, but you've proven my lawyer and I wrong. I'm glad this was a wise investment. However, it's only day one, so I expect you and your business partner to keep it up." He walked over to grab a glass of champagne and made a toast. The room was filled with lots of strangers, strangers with deep wallets. Jerry had invited all of his own people from the business world to come by the stores grand opening.

Gracie had been distant and had an annoyed look on her face. More annoyed than usual.

"What's wrong, honey? Today was a big win! You see the look on your old man's face when we hit the million mark?" I said bringing her a glass of champagne.

"Hmmph! Hardly an achievement worth celebrating." She said taking both the glass offered to her and the one in my other hand as well. She drank one and then the other.

"C'mon sweetie, what's got you in a poor mood?"

"Ask your BFF. He harassed me earlier today and you haven't done a thing about it!"

"What? Tom? He wouldn't do a thing like that..."

"Oh so I suppose I'm a thief and a liar now too."

"Thief? Oh no. I'm sorry, Gracie, I'll talk to him!" I went over to Tom right away.

Tom was chatting with some men in suits. Jerry's people. They handed him some business cards and walked to another section of the store.

"Making friends with the locals I see?" I said in teasing tone.

"Today was a huge success, Redd! Things have been off to a rough start but maybe it'll only get better from here on out. Still, I hope the police find something on the thief who stole my rubies."

"Yeah, about that... Look Tom, Gracie told me what you did. You really should have let me handle it."

Tom gave me a sorry look, "I shouldn't have spoken to her without you knowing. Is she upset with you? I promise it wasn't my intention to offend her."

I shook my head and took a champagne glass off of one of the waiters' tray who'd just walked by. "Don't sweat it, to be honest she blows up at me every other day, so I'm used to it at this point."

Tom looked at me curiously, "How did you two meet?"

"Oh its a real romantic story, real classic. I was at a VIP party with a fake name and a fake ID. They let me in, and word was going around that Lungorio's daughter was there. And you know me, when opportunity presents itself, Crazy Redd'll strike!" I said chuckling and taking a gulp of the drink.

"Huh.." Tom looked around the room and I could already tell what he was thinking.

I cleared my throat, "Look Tom, things are different around here. The city's not like Animal Village. That place is for chumps. If you wanna survive out here you gotta be willing to fight for it."

"Chumps? Our friends live in Animal Village."

"Forget 'em! All you need is this glass of fizzy right here and a fat wallet, and tonight you've got both! You and me buddy, we're going straight to the top!"

"Sable lives in Animal Village."

"Fine, bring her here. She could work for us, help clean up the place during closing hours or something."

Tom didn't like the sound of that one bit. He couldn't see the great opportunity it would be for her to work in the city.

"Look here Tom, you're one of us now. You're a new man, you need to stop living in the past." I said, turning his attention out the store window and at the city's night life which was in perfect view, "Look at that splendor! This is where you belong."

He was aggravated. He didn't like my words of wisdom. "We're all going down to Club LOL, the biggest club is right here in the city. You should join us, the night is young!"

Just then he got a call and stepped outside into the cold night air. The season for cheer and giving was approaching. Tom came back inside almost immediately, "It's the police, they've got a lead."

Chapter 10

Tom Nook

The night air was cold and there were some flurries of snow gently falling. A little early in the season, but maybe this is how it was in the city. I've never been a fan of snow myself. The holiday season was approaching and I couldn't believe I'd been in the city for a month now. The city was always livelier at night. Customers sitting out on heated patios enjoying a few laughs together, cars zipping up and down the roads, loud music who's bass thumps through the walls of the buildings, and the occasional siren always in the distance.

I was approaching the police station, a sign outside read 'Animal Village Police Department (ACPD) 12th Precinct'. It seems the city had many precincts. At least 12 judging by the sign.

"Hello officers" I said as I entered the building. It wasn't as large inside as I'd expected it to be. There were only two officers inside, both running around looking extremely busy. One of them was holding a phone to their ear with their shoulder and a pen and notepad in their hands.

"How can we help you, sir?"

"I received a call not too long ago. I'm here about the theft."

The officer chuckled, "Which theft? We've got stolen vehicles, stolen wallets, stolen paintings, stolen identities, and someone who stole a pair of dentures...don't suppose that's you, is it?"

I looked around the room and saw files and documents laid out in a mess on their desks, an empty coffee pot and hundreds of sticky notes on the walls. They really had their work cut out for them.

"Sorry, I'm here about the stolen rubies." I said as I took a seat.

"Rubies...rubies.. gotcha, it'll only be a second. I tell ya, if I could move to a small quiet town and open up a tiny police station there, I'd do it in a heartbeat" the officer said with a chuckle and a sigh.

I walked on over to a large cork board hanging on the wall. There were photographs and newspaper clippings pinned to it, with coloured thread connecting them all in the most winding way possible. Like a web of pure crime.

"Here it is! Rubies. You said your name was...?"

"It's Nook. Tom Nook."

"Well Mr. Nook you're in luck. We're pretty diligent with these things and we managed to find that your suspect in this footage you provided took a taxi after their little hi-jinx all the way to 3rd Street."

"I'm sorry, I'm new to the city. I'm not familiar with what's on 3rd Street. Is that a residential area?"

"No sir, Mr. Nook. The suspect got off on 3rd Street which is where this big office building is. It belongs to umm...what's his name...oh! It belongs to a Mr. Lungair..Lungo...Lung--"

"--Lungorio." I didn't know what to make of this revelation.

"Sure. Him. Anyway, I'm real sorry but we tried to get the security footage of the Lungorio building from that same night. Their head of security was pretty willing but their lawyer said we couldn't see a thing unless we came back with a warrant. And between you and me, that could take ages."

I thanked the officer and stepped outside to breathe some fresh air. I needed to think. I walked a bit further down the road and stepped into a quaint little coffee shop. I took a seat at the front bar and asked for something strong.

"Espresso, perhaps? Or maybe a house blend." said the bartender. He was a young pigeon, clearly an expert in his coffee and well experienced beyond his years in the art of brewing.

"You pick." I told him. I couldn't think about what kind of coffee to choose from, the only thing on my mind was what Lungorio had to do with that suspect who stole my rubies. Did the suspect work for Jerry? Is that why his lawyer interfered with the investigation? To protect his boss?

I had too many questions. The aroma of the coffee helped soothe me a bit, and there was someone behind me who started to play an acoustic arrangement of a song I'd not heard before. As the song played and the aroma filled my nostrils I fell into a trance of thought, of Sable, of Animal Village. The place I grew up and the place where my dreams of becoming a successful business owner first began. It was her. She was the reason why I wanted to be somebody. She'd raised her younger sisters on her own, and although the odds were against her, I'd say she did a darn well job of it. She went through her storm and came out on top. This was my storm, and I'm going to come out on top too.

Then I had an idea, "Thanks for the coffee" I said as I dropped a few bells on the counter.

"It's kilimanjaro" replied the young pigeon.

I got a taxi and made it back to Redd's apartment. Redd still wasn't home, and he probably wouldn't return for another few hours.

I pulled out a piece of paper and began to write:

Dear Sable,

I'm sorry I haven't written as frequently as I should have. The city's been keeping me busy. Quite busy indeed. I heard a song today that was oddly familiar to me. Not in the sense that I'd heard it once before, but rather, that it reminded me of you.

It was a beautiful melody. It brought back memories from our childhood, when we used to do silly things like chase after butterflies or bury treasure for our future selves to discover after so many long forgotten years. You told me something back then, something that's stuck with me to this day. You said never to give up on my dreams.

No matter how difficult the trials are in this city, I won't give up. This city was made for dreams to come true, and I'm going to reach the finish line even if the whole world is stacked against me.

Love, Tom.

Chapter 11

Sable

Dear Tom,

I loved hearing back from you. Receiving a letter from you is always the highlight of my day. It has been quite a while since I last sent you a letter and I hope that whatever trials you've been going through, you will always remember that I'll be here supporting you. It has become difficult for me to find the time to write, especially with the busy life I live. The work just keeps piling on, but I suppose that's a good thing. The shop's becoming a good distraction from my heartache. It isn't easy being so far away from you.

I can't believe its only been a month since you left. I often dream about you, and your desire to show kindness towards others, even when others are unkind towards you. That's what I love about you Tom. You've got a heart of gold and I know nothing will change that.

I just want to let you know that I am very proud about what you're doing, regardless of the fact that I seemed to be uncomfortable about it at first. I know that before you left I wanted you to stay, but I now realize that all of this is completely necessary, and I am now confident that good things will come of it. Sincerely and truly, I hope that you make the best of this experience.

Love, Sable

I put the stamp on the envelope and took it straight to the post office. I shared a few pleasantries with Pelly and she complimented the new apron I'd sewn myself.

The sewing machine  I used to make it was slowly losing its touch, so I suppose it was time to switch to a newer model soon. All of the tools I had at work were also pretty old and breaking down. Work's been my life. I spend my days working and on my off time cleaning and coming up with new designs with the help of Mabel. She's only a young teenager yet she's so bright with all of her ideas for simple dresses and shirts. She's occasionally joked around about how we should start a designer shop in the city. Those are the times when she sounds just like Label. I can still remember the way Label would pin her designs on her bedroom wall. Matching and customizing the clothing and accessories she owned. Such fond memories of our childhood. I remember the fun times I had with Tom as well...

                                                                                                 - Flashback -

"Hello Mrs. Able, can Sable come outside to play?" asked a young little Tom Nook.

"Why hello Tom! Yes, hold on just one second. I will go see if she's finished with her chores."

I stepped out of the house and into the summer breeze. Little Tom was standing there patiently. The sun was shining bright today, every leaf had returned, every petal had blossomed and everybody was outside enjoying the summer heat. The smell of freshly cut grass and sizzling barbecues permeated through the air.

"Hey Tom," I said full of excitement.

"Would you like a cookie? My mom just made them... they're fresh from the oven." I smiled as I held out a large warm cookie.

He happily accepted it.

"So what are you up to today?" I asked curiously as bits of cookie flung from my mouth.

"Well," He said reaching into his bag. "I thought that we could go catch us a couple of Monarch Butterflies today, I saw a couple flying around on my way here."

I looked around to see if I could spot any butterflies. "Hmmm.. actually, I've got an even better idea!" I said as I went around the house and into the shed. I came back with a small metal capsule.

"What is that?" little Tom said with a mouth full of cookie.

"It's called a time capsule. We can put stuff in it and bury it for later."

"Like buried treasure?"

"Yeah! I thought maybe we could each write a letter and put it inside the capsule, and then we bury it somewhere secret, where only we can find it. Then, after a couple years, we open it and read it!"

"That sounds cool, but what's the point?"

I fiddled with the capsule trying to get it open, "When we're older we can read the letters and see how much life has changed. We can write down our dreams and what we want in the future, and then see if we got it!"

"Alright! Lets do that!"

We ran into the house and rummaged through the drawers where I kept my art supplies. We took a couple of sheets of paper and some pencils and ran into the woods. We arrived at a spot we would frequent and placed the papers on a big tree stump.

We sat and wrote in silence

After I had scribbled down what I wanted to say, I looked up and saw that little Tom was already finished with his.

I placed the letters inside the time capsule, took a brief glance at both of our dreams, and then closed the capsule with a click. We worked together to dig ourselves a quick hole in the ground with our shovels, and then we dropped the capsule inside.

After a long sigh, Tom raised the shovel in the air and cheered, "To our happy future!"

I smiled. "To our happy future."

We refilled the hole where our dreams were buried under worthless, muddy dirt, to be forever forgotten...

Chapter 12

Tom Nook

It was a cloudy morning, the city was lightly coated with snow. There were always people out and about regardless of the time of day. It was early, 6:00am. I got dressed and ready to head out into the cold streets. I had a few hours before I had to open up the store, so I went over to Lungorio's office building. I decided the previous night that I would get to the bottom of this myself. I tried to get the authorities involved but they reached an impasse. I would have to take matters into my own hands and do some sleuthing of my own. This wasn't a mystery novel, however, and I had none of the qualifications of a detective. All I could do was face this myself, head on.

I took a taxi that brought me a few blocks away from the office building and had it drop me off there due to some construction that blocked some roads. It would be faster to walk from that point. It seemed like there was always some construction going on somewhere in this city.

After entering the building and wiping my feet I spoke to the receptionist, "Good morning, do you know if Mr. Longorio is in today?"

"He's unfortunately not here, won't be back until tomorrow. Did you want me to take a message for you, Mr. Nook?"

"No that's alright" I said feeling disappointed. I was making my way back to the revolving doors when I had another idea. Walking back to the front desk I asked, "How about Mr. Grendal?"

"Yes. He's in his office."

"Perfect" I said as I made my way through the main foyer.

"Sorry Mr. Nook he's actually quite busy at the moment. He'll be available after 5pm.

"Oh. How unfortunate. I suppose I'll come by after 5 then."

"No problem Mr. Nook. I'll put you down for a 5:30 meeting!"

I was once again disappointed, however, at least I wouldn't have to wait until tomorrow. Redd was probably waiting for me at the store anyway. I took a cab over to the store and to my surprise there was no one inside. I unlocked the front door, turned the lights on and prepared the day ahead. After counting the stock and ensuring the register had enough money, I opened up the store. There were plenty of customers there, but no sign of Redd.

The day went on and I was forced to take reigns on my own. I'd left Redd numerous messages until his inbox was completely full. He hadn't bothered to come in to work today. It was an exhausting work day, but I still found the energy to make my way over to my meeting with Grendal.

My stomach felt knotted and my palms were a little sweaty. I admittedly was rather nervous to speak to Grendal. I hadn't even thought about what I would ask him. Perhaps, if Jerry had mentioned the rubies to him. Maybe If he knew the suspect in the footage. I didn't have much time to think at that point.

"Mr. Grendal is ready to see you now."

I went up to the elevator and pushed the button for the 38th floor. Grendal had a very large and spacious office on this floor.

I exited the elevator and slowly walked down the hallway. The door leading to his office was silver plated and had an intricate and elegant design on its border. I gave it a knock.

"Come in."

I opened the door.

Grendel was sitting at his desk. I'm not sure what I was expecting. Perhaps to see Grendal and Jerry both sitting there waiting to tie me up. Maybe the suspect sitting across from him with a 'We've been expecting you' look on his face.

"Have a seat Tom." Grendal said without looking up from some papers he was holding.

I sat down trying my best to hide my nervousness. I felt like a student sent to the principles office. This was no time to quiver in fear. This was my storm and I had to fight it.

"How can I help you, Tom?"

I wasn't sure how to begin, so I decided to just be straightforward, "I was at the police station yesterday."

There was a silence in the room. Grendal was waiting patiently for my next sentence.

"I've asked them to look into a theft. Someone stole my rubies and there was a suspect that lead them here but--"

"I took them."

I felt the blood drain from my face and my heart seemed to have stopped.

I wasn't sure I heard Grendal correctly.

"Pardon?"

"I took your rubies." he said picking up some papers and organizing them on his desk.

"You stole my rubies? That suspect in the footage... the one wearing sunglasses... that was you?"

"The sunglasses and the old baseball cap, yes, that was me."

There was another silence in the room. I couldn't believe it. I didn't know what the conversation would be like, but I definitely did not expect this. He was confessing, and he didn't seem to have an ounce of remorse.

"You see, Mr. Nook, I know something about you. I know that you're new to this city and that you have great dreams and aspirations. I know that those dreams and aspirations are built on a foundation of money. And I know that the money you need comes straight from my employer. I also know that you don't have a license to sell."

My jaw dropped. Even if I could pick it up off the ground I wouldn't have been able to speak because there was a lump in my throat that prevented me of doing so.

"This is how it is Mr. Nook, don't look so surprised. This city, it requires a certain level of edge, an edge that you lack. You might as well be thanking me because you'll have that edge soon enough. You'll learn how things really work around here. What's that saying? Dog eat dog world?" Grendel chuckled. "Weasel eat raccoon world in this case. Your time will come and you'll be feeding off someone else, don't you worry. But for now, this stays between us. I won't say a word about the fact that you or your business partner are missing licenses and I get to keep all of those rubies. On top of that I expect to receive a rather large chunk of both you and Redd's earnings. But we can discuss that another time. " He stood and looked out his large office window at the city. The leech infested city.

"Is there anything else, Tom?"

I still couldn't speak.

"Then don't let the door hit you on your way out."

I rushed out of his office, down the elevator, out of the building and got into the nearest taxi. I was physically drained, emotionally drained, mentally drained. I cried the whole ride home.

I entered the apartment and Redd was there.

"Hey, cuz'" He said as he sat on the sofa and put his feet up,"What's gotten into you?"

I snapped at him. I went off about how he'd left me to take care of the store all on my own without warning. How he'd just been partying all the time and I even shouted about his complete lack of responsibility.

He fought back. Something about working his butt off for years to set us up with a good business offer.

"Good business offer, huh? You really struck gold, huh? Well Jerry's sleazy lawyer knows about the licenses, or should I say that there are no licenses!"

That got Redd's attention.

"How'd he find out about that!?"

"How should I know? This was your plan!"

I told him everything, the rubies, the blackmail, the extra cut from our earnings. He didn't react as upset as I thought he would have. We argued a bit more after that and he stormed out of the house. Said there was a party downtown and he was better off there than here.

I sat down at my desk and pulled out a piece of paper and a pencil. I couldn't write a single word. A single tear dropped onto the sheet of paper. I crumpled it up and tossed it away.

Chapter 13

Sable

It's been almost four weeks since I've received a letter. The longest I've gone without hearing back from him. I've sent him three letters since receiving his last, I really hope I'm not overbearing. I just miss him so much. We grew up together, we were friends since I was a little hedgehog and he was a little raccoon. This is the longest we've ever been apart. If only I'd known of his feelings for me long before he left.

I admired my diamond ring in the bright christmas lights that dangled around my home.

"Just a few more over this window and I think we're all set with the lights!" said Mabel.

Christmas was an exciting time for everyone, but especially Mabel. She would always get new fashion magazines and baking equipment. She was an avid baker just like our mother. Around this time of year Mabel would bake sugar cookies in the shape of christmas trees and shirts.

I was on my fourth letter to Tom and didn't know how to start it. I was so worried about overwhelming him with so many letters. Maybe he wasn't getting them. I checked in with Pelly a few times prior and she'd assured me that he was receiving them. But maybe there was something wrong with the exchange.

"Hey! Sable, I need a hand with these lights!"

"Oh! Coming Mabel!"

We gently placed them on the house and plugged them in. The house was beautiful. This was going to be a special christmas. I just knew it would be.

"Are you still trying to figure out how to start the letter to Tom?" Mabel asked as she put away the ladder.

"I just want to make sure it's perfect." I said as I put away the stationary and pencils.

"How about 'Hey Tom, come home!'?"

We both laughed. Our breathe was visible in the cold air. Tom and I used to pretend we were fire breathing dragons when we were children during the winter season. The night was so beautiful. The snow was perfect for building a snowman which is exactly what Mabel and I intended on doing once the cookies were out of the oven.

A snowball gently hit my shoulder. I turned to see Mabel making a second snowball, preparing to launch it at me again. I quickly made one and threw it in her direction, but my aim was awful, and it went right over her head. We flung the snowballs back and forth until the timer went off and it was time to pull the sugar cookies out of the oven. Winter was always a beautiful time of year. Christmas has always been my favourite holiday to celebrate. It saddens me that Tom won't be around.

We decorated the cookies, the trees we always decorated with green icing. The shirt shaped cookies we decorated with every colour we could find, each one unique and perfectly designed.

When it was midnight we exchanged gifts. Mabel excitedly opened the one I got her. It was a doll that I sewed together myself. It had taken a lot of work but it was perfect in every way, just for her.

Mabel got me a brand new apron that she ordered from a catalog.

Our stockings were filled with candies and goodies. There were three of them hung on the fireplace. They each had a beautiful stitching with our names on them, courtesy of our mother:

Sable, Label, and Mabel.

Christmas was also a time of year when we would miss our sister. No matter how many Christmas' went by, we could never get used to not having her around.

We listened to Christmas music and talked all night long, sharing plenty of laughs.

"You know," Mabel said looking at the warm fire blazing in the fire place, "I'm sure Tom misses you just as much. He's probably just been busy with the holiday season."

"Oh, of course. Stores are always crazy this time of year. " I gave Mabel an endearing smile, "Don't worry about me, I'm okay."

We both sat silently and peacefully staring at the fire.

When it was time for bed Mabel and I both put our PJ's on and said goodnight. It had been a good Christmas, even though Tom wasn't able to celebrate with us.

I stepped onto the front porch to get a good look at the stars. I could see the Star Shirt constellation, but I couldn't see the Farmer's Market Bargain Bin Constellation.

"Beautiful night, isn't it?" said a voice near by. I turned to the direction it came from. There was a Snowman there, staring back at me.

"...S..snowman?"

"Huh?" Someone walked from behind the snowman, "No it's me! Snowmen can't talk!" A reindeer in red clothes walked around the snow man and approached me.

"Jingle! How nice to see you on this beautiful night."

Jingle was a black nosed reindeer who visited Animal Village every year. We always gave him a warm welcome, offering him milk and freshly baked cookies.

"I couldn't help but notice you staring up at the night sky, with a sad look in your eyes." He said as he stood on the porch next to me, also looking up.

"It's such a wonderful night, the night sky is so clear, the stars are so vivid." He said as he leaned against the porch railing.

"A beautiful night." I replied.

"Heartache, is it?"

I glanced over to him, "How could you tell?"

"The glistening eyes tell all. Every year I've visited there seemed to be more people gathered around your fire. Tonight was a quieter night."

"There's just someone I've been missing lately. but it will pass, I'm sure."

Jingle rubbed his chin, "You know, sometimes when we miss someone it's just our heart reminding us that there's a bond that not even distance can break!"

"That's a very sweet thing to say."

After a few moments of standing out on the porch, Jingle made his way back in the direction he came, "It's been a busy night, making the rounds and delivering all those toys. Time to hit the hay." He smiled at me, " Isn't this the best time of the year?"

I waved goodbye and he was gone. I thought about what he said. There indeed was quite a bit of heartache, but it wasn't just from Tom. I suddenly knew exactly how to start the letter:

Dear Label...

Chapter 14

Redd

Life's good! It couldn't get much better than this. Two straight wins and now a royal flush. Ol' Redd's really rolling in bells now. The dealer handed me some colourful tokens, I had a whole stack of them. Time to cash out! If only Gracie could see me now! Oh well, her loss. Who needs her anyway? I've got her daddy's financiers on contract and Nook looking after the place while I hit the slots and win jackpots! I do feel a little bad about pushing the bulk of the work onto Tom. To be fair, I was slaving away working my butt of snagging all kinds of favours and deals. All while he sat comfortably back in Animal Village. He should be thanking me, really.

I really hope Grendal wasn't too loose in the lips with what he told Tom. Hey, everybody's gotta eat. So what if we hold our cards close to the chest? Speaking of cards, "I was on fire tonight!"

"You sure know how to play those dealers, Redd!"

I made a bunch of new friends now that I'm a big wig. Party here, party there, casino every other night. It's a pretty sweet deal! The dream, I'm living the dream! This is what I came out to the big city to do.

"Alright fellas, I'll catch you guys another time, gonna go hit the hay."

"Awww, already?" my new friends grumbled with disappointment, "The night's plenty young! How about a few more rounds?"

"Nah, lads I'm gonna call it. I'll be back real soon, though. We need to do this again real soon!"

I was feeling a little drowsy. I think I earned myself a good nights sleep. Even if it was the early hours of the morning.

When I got home Tom was still asleep. Boy do I have great news for him in the morning.

The alarm rang almost immediately after my head hit the pillow. I completely forgot to switch off the alarm. I could've gotten a few extra minutes of snooze time. I was in no rush to head into the store, Tom would have everything covered. Oh, right. I was going to reveal the big news to Nook before he went into work today!

I hopped out of bed, took a big yawn and stretched.

"Hey cuz'! Whatcha eating for breakfast? Cereal? Great!"

"Morning Redd. I see you had a busy night. I heard you stumble in through the door."

"Listen Tom, the past couple of months have been great, being room mates with you and all. But now I think I'm ready for something bigger, something crazier!"

Tom looked at me perplexed as he finished his breakfast.

"I'm gonna move in to a fancy new apartment! And the best part is: you get to keep this one! All to yourself, how does that sound cuz'?"

Tom looked pretty surprised, that was the first time I'd seen him smile in a long time come to think of it.

"That's great to hear, you'll really let me keep the place?" He asked.

"Of course! We can sign the papers today if you want! I'm ready for bigger and greater things!"

I'd been saving up for a large suite in the new high rise buildings that had finished construction not too long ago. With all the winnings I've been making hitting the slots and the earnings from the store, I was well over what I needed to buy the place. To say I was eager to get out of that dump of an apartment and into a luxurious new place would be an understatement. Big outdoor pool, giant heated bed, personal hot tub... yeah, that was real living!

We shook hands and chatted for a bit before I pulled up the apartment ownership deed. We both signed it and Tom took them so he could drop them off to Lyle before work. It was official! He was the new owner of this one star apartment, and I'd soon become the owner of a fancy luxury suite on 1st street!

Later that day I stopped by the store to make sure Tom hadn't set the place on fire. I hadn't been there in a while so it was nice to see the place booming with customers and fully stocked. Tom seemed to be doing a decent job running the place. He told me Lyle filed the documents for the apartment ownership and thanked me again. Nice to finally get a thank you and some recognition around here. I worked for years acquiring suppliers to send me merchandise we could sell at this store. My previous attempts on the black market didn't pan out so good, but this was totally legit! Well... maybe legit isn't the right word. A place like Redd & Jerry's Art Emporium had the backing of one of the wealthiest men in the city, so there was nothing to worry about.

Or so I thought.

Lyle gave me a call. He said he had bad news and needed to see me in person right away. Tom asked me if everything was okay.

"Everything's just fine cuz'! I'll take care of it." I said as I put my phone away.

Tom didn't seem too convinced.

Lyle and I met up in an alley behind Club LOL. It was a private spot with not too much action, a good spot to have private conversations. Lyle was looking extra shifty. I gave him a pat on the shoulders, "Heya cuz'! So... what seems to be the big issue?"

"It's the paintings. Word's got out. Forgeries. And the licenses. They know!"

I looked around to make sure we were alone, "Who knows, Lyle? Who??"

"Word on the street is the feds. But likely the FBI too."

"Not the Federal Bureau of Iguanas!"

"You know how those Iguanas are. Always meddling. Bad news. Real bad."

I had to think. What to do. What to do. If the store was compromised, then I couldn't go back there. Luckily, the apartment's in Tom's name now so I'm free to skip on outta here.

"Alright Lyle, listen very carefully. This is what we're gonna do..."

Chapter 15

Tom Nook

The snow was completely melted away. Winter had come and gone. With it, Christmas and New Years. I'd been too preoccupied running the store and keeping up with Grendal's demands to worry about the holidays. Time was really zooming passed me. This city was hard work, but I wasn't going to give up. In spite of it all, I needed to come out on top.

Redd was acting strange today. Stranger than usual that is. I've grown used to independently running Redd & Jerry's, so it wasn't odd that he would only occasionally swing by the store. He was acting strange after he got a phone call from Lyle. What kind of mess could he have gotten himself into this time? I suppose it wasn't any of my business.

He gave me his apartment, and having my own place is a step in the right direction. A step in achieving my dreams and showing this city that I really can make it. I'd show this city that it can't break me. I came here with dreams, and although things haven't turned out how I imagined, I'm not going to quit. This city won't get rid of me that easily.

Closing hour approached and I prepared to turn the lights out and lock the doors. I decided I'd stop by the cafe and have some coffee, the same one I'd visited all those months ago. I hadn't been since, but I felt a craving for something strong. What was it he called it? Kilimanjaro? Whatever blend it was, I was craving it.

The cab dropped me off right in front of the cafe. I tipped the driver and stepped out.

I sat in the exact same seat that I sat in on my first visit. The Cafe was pretty empty. No acoustic melodies, just the radio, the young pigeon and my cup of hot coffee.

Last time I was in this spot I thought about Animal Village, I thought about my friends, my memories. I thought about Sable. I shook my head as if to shake those thoughts out of my mind. Thinking about those days almost felt daunting. Thinking about Sable now made me feel anxious. I felt like I let Animal Village down. I felt like I let her down. I came here to make it big, it's now been roughly a year of me living in this city. How could time have slipped away so quickly? The finish line doesn't feel any closer than when I stepped off that bus all those months ago.

I felt weary. Tired.

I chatted with the barista for a bit and shortly after made my way home. The apartment's all mine now, yet nothing feels different. It feels as if nothing's changed. I feel like such a disappointment. There's a stack of letters in my bedroom corner. They're all from Sable; I haven't had the heart to open any of them. The last two came with a gift, I haven't opened those either.

I couldn't bare look at what she'd written. The thought of how hurt she must feel to not have received a letter in over half a year, is too much to bear.

Redd's bedroom is wide open, and still a mess, just as it's always been. I've never actually been inside his bedroom. What would I do with this room now that he's moving out? I stepped inside to examine the space and think up some ideas.

Just then I noticed a couple sheets of papers under his mattress. How could he be this unorganized and messy? I pulled them out to toss them in the trash, unless they were important. I wasn't sure if they might be so I unfolded them and read them.

I couldn't believe what I was reading. The information on these pages felt like a punch to the stomach. I couldn't contain my tears and broke down, falling to my knees, defeated and exhausted. Nothing could hold back my cries now.

The document was a contract written up by Grendal and Redd. Redd would be receiving his full earnings, and he and Grendal would be splitting most of my cut between the two. I'd been earning so little over the last few months, barely enough to get by. Most of my money wasn't going to Grendal, most of it was going to Redd. What's more, is that the ownership of Redd & Jerry's was only in Redd's name. We weren't business partners. He was the sole owner of the store. It occurred to me that Redd knew about the rubies. He must have been the reason Grendal even knew about them in the first place. I've never felt so betrayed in my life.

There was a knock on the door. I hid the papers and wiped my tears away as I made my way to the front door. It was one of the officers from the 12th precinct accompanied by an Iguana in a bomber jacket with some letters stitched on the front: FBI.

"Sorry to bother you sir, may we step inside for a moment?"

I allowed them to enter, I was a bit shaken up, but most of that was from the revelation of the documents I'd just uncovered.

"We're looking for someone who goes by the name of 'Crazy Redd'. We have it on good authority that he lives here."

"Lived here. As of this morning he sold me the apartment. I haven't seen him all day and he hasn't come home for his things yet. Is everything alright?" I asked knowing perfectly well that things weren't alright.

"We went by his business establishment a few moments ago, we're shutting that whole place down."

"Redd & Jerry's!? Why!?"

"Stolen merchandise, sir. The pieces of art sold there are either stolen or forgeries. The only other two people affiliated with the store are its financer Jerry Lungorio and his lawyer... A Mr. Grendel."

"Oh my goodness... how fortunate" I said suddenly glad my name wasn't included in any of the new owner and proprietor documents.

"What's that now?"

"How unfortunate. Officer, where are the other two fellows now?"

"Mr. Grendal has been apprehended on account of supplying the stolen merchandise and on account of being aware the stock included forgeries. As for Mr. Lungorio, it seems he's not in the city. He's been embezzling large amounts of company money into the store. As soon as he steps foot into the city we'll cuff him. Until then he's missing. It seems like your friend Crazy Redd is missing too by the looks of it."

"He's not my friend, officer." I said bitterly.

I offered the two officers some refreshments but they refused. They asked me to give them a call if I heard back from Redd.

Now that the great Redd & Jerry's Art Emporium is no more, it looks like thats it.

I walked into my bedroom and sat at my desk reflecting on everything that just occurred. What would I do next?

I turned my attention to the stack of envelopes. I opened them up one by one starting from the oldest. "Dear Tom" I read one after the other, "Dear Tom". Each letter bringing back a flood of memories. "Beloved Tom". All the memories that I'd locked away and buried deep down, "Dear Tom". The second last gift was a Christmas present. Time has a funny way of slipping passed us. I unwrapped it, it was a golden keychain with my initials on it, on the back was engraved a heart. She'd always been so creative with everything she did. Always working hard and making an honest living.

The last gift she sent me arrived a little over a month ago. I finally opened it. It was a small box. Inside the box was her diamond ring...

Chapter 16

Sable's Letter

Dear Tom,

I dream about you often. The way you'd walk into the shop pretending to look for a new outfit when we both know you were really only spending time there to chat with me and keep me company while I worked away. The way you would softly smile whenever you'd smell the freshly baked cookies in my home. The way your eyes glistened as we star gazed into the late hours of the night, dreaming of our futures.

But that's all it is now. A dream. A memory waiting to be forgotten. It's been ten months since I've heard from you. I grew anxious and worried about you each and every night, hoping you were alright. Pete from the post office told me you've seemed quite alright when you two would see each other in the city. I'm glad you're safe. He says you're doing fine and you look happy.

Ten months is quite a long time for a person to grow. I've done some growing of my own, you know. I've come to terms with the fact that you won't be coming back. From the sounds of it, you've made the city your home now and I'm happy for you. The pain of never seeing you again is too great, so I decided I can't spend my days staring out the window, hoping you'd return. Nor can I spend my days waiting for a letter in the mail. Phyllis tells me I need to move on, just as you have and focus on my family, and I think she's right. Mabel is all I have left now and she needs me to be on top of things. I can't keep living with my head in the clouds hoping our dreams of being together will still come true.

It pains me to say that I'm writing this to you as a farewell. Life has a funny way of teaching us valuable lessons about friendship and love. I wish you luck on your endeavours, and I hope the city was everything you dreamt it would be. I don't know if you'll even read this, but in case you do, I truly do wish you the best of luck.

May the hopes and dreams you buried as a boy be given to you in the city as a man,

Sable.

P.S. I've attached a small box to this letter. It doesn't seem as if I'll be needing it anymore.

Chapter 17

Seven Years Later

Lyle stepped out of the insurance building he had been working at. He momentarily set his briefcase down to adjust his little boater hat, and then picked it back up and went on his way. He had an important client he was meeting that day.

Stepping into a cafe, he sat next to an old friend.

"Hey Nook! Long time no see!" He said as he ordered a coffee from the barista.

"Snazzy place. Smells nice. Aromatic. Real nice." He said as he received his cup of coffee.

"Yes, yes quite nice, indeed. I don't come here too often, just when I need to think of big life decisions it seems! Ho ho!" They both sipped on their coffees. Lyle looked at Tom's tired, jaded eyes.

"So how's life been? Good I hope!"

"Life's been as it's always been, I suppose... By the by, you haven't heard from..."

"Nah. He's still under the radar. I've been on the straight and narrow ever since then! Yes sir! Have a pretty good setup at the insurance company. Great opportunities."

"I see... Well that's excellent to hear!"

"Right. Yep. Glad you're keeping well. You're good. I'm good. We're all good... To be honest, I was a little surprised when I saw you called my office. Excited! But surprised.

"Well it's time for change, Lyle, and the market place is getting crowded. Rather crowded, indeed. I needed to find a new spot to sell my wares." Tom said as he turned to order another cup of joe.

"That's great! Glad to hear it. I know of a couple spots opening up. One by a new hair salon. Or maybe next to that big fancy designer boutique!"

"Designer boutique?" Tom hadn't been up to date with the city's main attractions.

"Yeah. Right in the city square. What was it called... Gracie Grace! Yeah! That's it. She opened it up shortly after... you know, the whole big fiasco." He took a swig of his coffee, "I helped her out. Gave her a hand. Poor girl. I had to help. After things went south with her pops' company. She wanted to make a name for herself. Start fresh all on her own. Good for her, I say. She's gone and gotten herself an assistant,  last I checked. Bright young hedgehog. Met her myself!"

"That all sounds very good. I'm happy for her, but I don't think I'll be setting up something in the city actually. I have the perfect spot in mind, somewhere quite far from here. It won't be much at first, but with the right resources and with time, it'll grow into something grand, yes yes."

"That sounds swell, pal! And I assume you took out a loan for this spot you had in mind?"

"Ho ho! No I'll be paying for it all upfront. I'm not a big fan of loans, you know. It'll be just as I dreamt all those years ago. And who knows I may even get my two nephews to help around from time to time."

"Family business, eh? Sounds like a plan. Good for you, Tom!"

"Yes it'll be nice to have family around. And it'll be nice to see some old friendly faces too. I'm eager to make the move. Soon, yes yes, very soon."

Lyle made a toast to Tom's endeavours.

They chuckled and enjoyed each others company, sipping on their coffees and enjoying the acoustic melodies from the guitarist playing live in the cafe.

                                                                                                           -------

Back in Animal Village Mabel had just arrived home from her visit at the post office. She laid the mail out on the kitchen table and called into the house for her sister, "Sable! There's a couple of letters here for you!"

Sable entered through the backdoor, she'd been pruning her garden. It was autumn and some of the plants needed her attention. There was a lush garden behind her with plenty of vegetables, tulips, roses and even some Jacob's ladder.

"Wow, more mail? Alright thanks sis, I'll open them in a bit."

"Yeah theres a letter with a package attached, also for you. Not sure who the sender is. Oh well. Must be a birthday gift!" Mabel said winking and kissing her sister's forehead and running up to the second floor. Sable completely forgot it was her birthday today, she'd always been so busy and rarely ever took the time to remember her own birthday. She took a gander at the envelopes on the table. She shuffled through them slowly, reading the sender's name of each one. The package caught her eye. She hadn't received any packages in a while.

She opened it up to find a small rectangular box. It was a pair of burnt-orange scissors. They were of the highest quality. She examined them in awe and pulled out a letter that was attached  to it. The letter accompanying it was short and succinct:

Dear Sable,

It's been far too long and no words can ever repair the damage I've caused with my absence. Despite everything I put you through, I hope you can accept this very small token of gratitude for all the support you've been in my life. I truly couldn't have survived this city without you.

T.N.

She lowered the letter and looked out the window. The wind rustled some of the autumn leaves through the air. The breeze carried them up and around and then out of view. She held the letter close to her heart. A single tear gently rolled down her cheek as her mind was filled with beautiful memories of the good old days.
