I know Nintendo has said they’ll be adding updates for the next few years. That’s great and all, but I paid $60 for this game already. I expect a completed game that I can fully enjoy. I understand this has been a trend in other games, but in a slow paced game it doesn’t work.

I hate that I have to wait for updates to slowly roll out. The problem is these updates are things we’ve had in past games and should have been there already at launch. The updates should be small new features, not things that bring the game up to speed with New Leaf. It seems unfair that I paid $60 for a big name like Animal Crossing, and I have to wait who knows how long to get an update that should have been in the game in the first place.

I don’t know, I just hate the fact that I’m waiting another 3 years for the (again, full-priced) game to be fully complete.

Oh boy here we go

Like, I get it, but we're not paying for these updates, and you paid $60 for a game that will last years. Seems like a good deal to me, when a movie will cost $15 for 2-3 hours and several movies up to $60 would be only several hours. I think 1000 hours over 3 years is bang for your buck. If you can't find anything to do without the updates then you're not doing it right lol Cause I find something to do practically every day.

I can find things each day.

I understand your viewpoint. If it works for you, that’s great, good for you. It doesn’t work for me, especially when I’ve played since Wild World and its never been like this. I enjoy the game because there’s always been something big and exciting to work towards, like unlocking a shop. I want that stuff available now, rather than the future when who knows if I’ll still be playing each day. And who knows if certain features are even in the works

I understand that too, especially the part where you might not have time or care to play later. Although in hindsight anything before NL is really boring imo. I tried to test out City Folk, and even Wild World again a little while ago and they're awful I feel like those have actually nothing to do compared to New Horizons.

All of the things people are upset that are coming out in updates are things that in past games took weeks/months of play to progress to those points. Seems logical and reasonable to me that updates would unlock content just like weeks of hours and work into the game might unlock.

Cry me a river!! Go play new leaf! sorry, edit to cross that out and say, why can't people with this point of view step back and try to relax and have fun with the (plentiful) content available on a game franchise that they love?

^^^^^ Literally that. Takes weeks and months of normal gameplay anyway and everyone wants to zip through it.

An example is the whining for a second store update, but like, in past games the second and following store upgrades came with some pretty tight criteria that I didn't have guide information to when I first played. That was fun! It was confusing! That's why it's a video game!

Though the amount of hours I play every day has gone down since the game came out, I still find new things to do every day, still make new plans and have new ideas. I love checking into my town for like 20-30 mins at a time thruout the day, see the sky change. see the sunset! it's so great! have you had cool weather yet? it's awesome. just play the game!

Sure, but everything that took so long to update were at least things we knew were coming. I feel like the only thing I’m working on is the museum and getting furniture. I just want bigger things to work toward instead of hoping it MAYBE comes out in the next year

I agree that WW and CF had nothing compared to newer games. However, I played those young and didn’t have expectations or anything to compare it to.

It’s wrong that I want to know what to look forward to?

Good for you that you enjoy this style, I personally don’t like being sold a half-finished game for a full price

I say it’s half finished because they’re planning to roll out updates in the next few years instead of putting it in right away

just because you don't have access to things that you wouldn't have access to anyway until time passed (! lol!) doesn't mean it's not finished.

I think the team working on New Horizons is doing the best they can do right now. I think people have overestimated how long the game was in development since I've heard rumblings from this community that this game has been announced since new leaf in 2012 or something which people have extrapolated to mean they literally developed this game for 7-8 years.

At best you are looking at a development window that started in early or late 2018, they rebuilt the game from the ground up, everything has been done over, the even recrecorded the audio and sound effects for the game from scratch. Late 2019- early 2020 they hit a crossroads in January or February that everything content wise wasn't fully bug tested or gone gold so they made a decision to package what they could in the cartridge to be prepped for shipment for their March 20 deadline and began finalizing the rest of the content in the background for game updates. Then the current crisis hit and there was a slight delay as developers had to figure out a work from home solution at the last minute.

You're getting massive updates within 30 days of the game being out. There is no logically way they coded all the current updates so far from scratch in that short of a time frame. They had this stuff ready to go but wanted to ensure you didn't have issues like game breaking bugs.

All this is a lot of speculation but it's the most logical conclusion I can come up with based on what I can draw from. I get that people are upset but i think the angst is a little misplaced. But hey, it's one of numerous threads of this game not being 100% perfect. Just add it to the pile.

This game is OVERFLOWING with content, and the disparity that some people claim to exist between this game and New Leaf is just ridiculous, especially considering just how much this game adds to surpass it.

This game is worth the full price I paid. 100%. I can’t put it down.
We’re literally A MONTH into the life of a game that is supposed to be played over YEARS. Animal Crossing by its very nature, has ALWAYS limited the player’s access to content behind the passage of time, and it has always emphasized the value of delayed gratification and patience.

There is finished content for the game that has been withheld intentionally, and that’s just something that needs to be accepted. But also, we need to accept the fact that they’ve promised this content and remain faithful in these developers to fulfill that promise.

I was honestly surprised with how soon we got a new update and with how extensive it was. And this only affirms my confidence that the developers care and that they have a plan.

And the updates are free? I’m good yo

"the disparity that some people claim to exist between this game and New Leaf is just ridiculous, especially considering just how much this game adds to surpass it."

I honestly just think it comes down to people wanting it to have been the 100% most perfect/definitive/amazing/unbelievable animal crossing of their dreams. Every game has fluctuated in content and quality. Heck New Leaf had a redo with the welcome amiibo addition and a makeover of the 3ds to include an NFC reader built in with a mid way compromise of that NFC reader peripheral for the 3ds. Even New Leaf wasn't perfect on release, they had to re-release the game.

Damn Hannah laid down the law.

Remember when it would take days to just put down 1 street light in New Leaf? lol But in NH you can drop down 100 in an afternoon if you had them. But because there's no police station it's a bad game? Because people TT'd to June and didn't find ReTail, that must mean it's not coming right? So it's time to get angry and bash the whole thing? Lol

Lol I think people forget though that the police station is generally useless now. They use to tell you about events or visitors, but Isabelle does that now and there's other ways to find discarded items from NPCs. When they finally give us Booker & Copper, people are gonna be mad that it doesn't do 500 different things and will go on about "remember the old days?"
No ones thinking about remember the old days when you look at the catalog of furniture. You were nearly limited to just the sets and series, there were practically no detail items until NL, and NH has added more.

I think memory and nostalgia play in your favor not in reality's favor. NL is still good but City Folk and before are all boring, there's nothing you can place outside without working hard for it, and then everyone has the exact same thing. The same Fountain in the same spot for the same exact reasons. Lack of clothing variety. People were often annoyed even up to NL that we still had a need to write letters in the game, "why are we writing letters when we won't even really use email anymore?", but I bet somewhere out there someone's waiting for the stationary update.

I understand both points of view.  It's frustrating not being able to use all your past strategies and feeling like you can't have the whole game right now.

I also appreciate the slowing down of time through updates because I have had a lot of real-time events spoiled because of my own or others' time travel.  And it's cool when you have this special item before everyone else, but then play stagnates.

I played Animal Crossing for GameCube but found it only a few months before the Wild World release.  I played Wild World for almost 4 years because the first year I couldn't afford wifi so I just lived in my own word in my own town. And it was awesome to live the day to day adventure.  Then I got wifi and spent a couple more years participating in all the social aspects with abandon.

In City Folk and New Leaf I went in armed with info and online friends and got lots of things real fast and ruined all my events for myself and felt real cool to have special items early and then didn't make it through a whole year before I got bored and moved on.

It's hard to wait, but sometimes there are reasons why it is worth it.  You could use your time to accumulate variants of the things we know and sell it to those living in the moment at a premium when the number of sets increases and us blissful ones start yearning for complete catalogs.

These variations are killing me softly.

No matter how you play, play hard.

I'd argue that the concept of a long-term updated game works better in a slow title like Animal Crossing more than it does literally anywhere else. They are "intended" (not here to tell people how is right to play, just going off of design present in the game) to be played in smaller bursts over literal years. If Nintendo gives meaningful support for even two years that is a massive boon. Yes, I know, some of the support is just importing features from older titles. But it's still a way to make things an event, adding to that "living, breathing game" feeling.

I'm not the biggest fan of many of the removals, but I do find the approach very logical for Animal Crossing.

I totally get where you're coming from, and I don't mean to sound dismissive of your points because, yeah, the way you feel is totally legit! There are definitely a few things that make me think this game could have used some more development time. But the way that they're rolling out the updates isn't one of them imo! And like others have said, people can't rush through everything the game has to offer through time travelling. I like that everyone gets to experience all the new content at the same time! I find it a lot more fun that way.

Plus it keeps everything fresh and exciting! They're planning on releasing so much new content over the next few years, and I'm really excited to see what its all going to be! ^^

Not to mention, they're free updates. Like, I would definitely be way more upset if they were making us wait for all of these different events/items/characters/etc., but then charging us for them as paid DLC. So it could always be way worse!

Call this selfish, but I do really appreciate that Holidays are being rolled out as downloads. I just never did like that people were skyrocketing the clock day one, and already knew exactly how all events go down... and also owned all pieces/items from said events. Like, you may enjoy that, but in an era of sharing everything that would take away so, so much for those of us who just wanna see Holidays happen alongside real life.

FWIW I am with you OP.

I won't rehash all my previous rants from past threads, but I agree 100%. I want to know what I have to look forward to instead of looking forward with hope that I'll like what they decide to scatter down upon us. I never cared about people who TTd and found out all the game's 'secrets' though. It seems to be a big deal with some people.

I am about 50/50 with the updates (disliked both events, but yay bushes! etc.) we have received so far. So it really doesn't help me gage anything down the line unfortunately.

I mean, I went in spoiler free to this game...and I think that was a mistake.

If they planned that the game wouldn't be complete like some are suggesting, it would have been really decent of them to have said so upfront. I expected a full game with DLC goodies sprinkled in here and there.

Without the whole 'shelter in place' going on (AKA I am dang bored) I am not sure I would have picked up this game upon release had I known the above. I am still playing an hour or two here and there to kill time and I still think even unfinished (IMO of course) it's a decent game - it's just not as good as it should have been right out of the gate for me.

You knew there would be backlash if you posted something like this to begin with, airing your feelings out about the new title is going to invite criticism.

Same team who worked on Splatoon is behind this game so I'm not surprised everything is timegated. I'm not holding this game to the same standard as they introduced this game from the start to be a little different from the previous titles. I understand you're probably not in a rush and that you're probably just wanting confirmation above all, I feel the same way. Just take a break if this game isn't bringing enjoyment, your feelings won't magically change just because you keep playing nonstop if you're stumped on what to do. I put it down for a week, came back, was immediately inspired with ideas, and I can find ways to develop my island every day.

I agree. It certainly feels like they released an unfinished game. The only saving grace is that the updates are free.

"You knew there would be backlash if you posted something like this to begin with, airing your feelings out about the new title is going to invite criticism."
Or, the people that take opinions they don't agree with as personal attacks can just... not enter topics they don't agree with if it bothers them that much.  All I see in this topic is a lot of condescending, passive aggressive remarks.
