Hi, I’m usually not on here to be mean but I’m warning people about this.
I opened my gates because my friends told me they were going to visit me, but then some random person who I didn’t know literally ruined my town.
They shook all my trees and cut them down leaving the stumps on the floor and bells beehives and fruit all over the floor
they trashed my beach dumping their own shells on mine
They hit my rocks and took the bells and crystals out of them
they ruined my flowers they took them and they ran over them causing them to explode
They  wrote some not nice stuff on mybullentin board including curse words and death threats
They  bought everything in retail able sisters kicks  my tiy and leifs store leaving nothing left
And lastly they unburied all my fossils i had and used their slingshot to get all the balloons
This is discusting! Even though I put everything back to where it was before, I literally don’t feel safe anymore and I’m scared to open my gates again I’m literally shaking and shocked someone finds this funny or okay to trash my island. Again I’m not trying to be mean, just trying to warn you all. Thank you...

I thought that New Leaf only allowed people on your friend-list to enter your town when the gates are open, though? Am I misremembering that? It's been a long time since I last played it, admittedly.

Hi what game is this? New Leaf or New Horizons?
In NH people can't do this unless you've given them permission for an axe or shovel (which is good.)
It warns you to not give permissions for best friend feature without trusting people, due to this issue.

If someone is doing this in New Leaf, just hit the power button immediately (or if you have an older 3DS/3DS XL, not the New) you can hit the wifi switch to trigger internet loss, and it'll boot them out.

If it was NH, they wouldn't have been able to visit you without a code, so you must have put the code somewhere or a friend gave the code away.

If memory serves, "anyone" just meant anyone on your friend-list, and "best friends" is an elevated in-game status that you can give out.

No Animal Crossing game that I know of has an option to visit the general-public's live towns at random, and even ACNH's Dodo Codes involve exchanging a code with a live person to facilitate a visit. I don't know of any AC with a "Find a random town with an open gate!" option when you go to visit another town.

That being so, it means that the person who trashed your town and wrote those awful things is both traceable and is actually someone that you already know, because they're on your 3DS' friend-list.

Yeah it was certainly someone on your friends list if it was the 3ds version, maybe they made a new person/town.

Otherwise, I doubt you were doing local play?

Idk maybe my friend gave someone my town number and they added me to their friends list or something

The friend-list is not a one-way thing - on the 3DS, and indeed on all Nintendo systems, you both have to add each other, otherwise it will not go through. It was definitely someone you know, and who you knowingly added to your friend-list, who did this.

PennyGwin is correct. I would check who was online recently in the past few days (it just happened right?)
and make guesses then. Definitely watch your friends though, that's dodgy behaviour.

Oh noooo! I had somebody do something similar in my town a while ago, they took all my jacobs ladders and left fruit shaken all over the ground, I know it's not as bad, but if you need anything still, I could help.
