I'm posting this here as I don't think everyone knows about this nice service that comes with your nintendo online subscription.
If you get nintendo online so you can visit towns of far away people, there is an app for your real life smart phone (android or iphone) that is really helpful and has built in voice chat.
I have had a lot of great people visit my town and few seem to know about this so I am mentioning it here.
Even if you don't want to voice chat (which I completely understand - I am shy to talk in real life) there is a keyboard which I think makes it a lot easier to send in game messages. It also lets you scan qr codes for patterns and artwork, although I haven't tried that yet.
Anyway, thought I'd mention it.
------------- switch name - gordon in game name - egil town - vínland
I use this ALL the time. I do all my typing when visiting on this app as its so much easier. I haven't used the voice feature just because I really am not into that much, and its rarely quiet enough around here to be worth it, but for the codes and the typing alone its so worth it.
Ohhh seabass.... not again! >:[
Unfortunately this app sometimes glitches out when 4 or more people are visiting in a town and some of us get dropped from the chat and can't join back in unless we exit the town & re-enter. As a result we use messenger chat instead if we know that someone will have a lot of visitors.

I always use this for when i have guests or travel, and I’m glad you made this post bc I’ve def met people who don’t know about it. I have a question though, Someone mentioned you can use this for typing, which I do when I chat, but can you use it to do things like input dodo codes or when writing letters? That’d be rad
I've tried to get the voice to load up a few times and can't seem to figure it out. I have a USB keyboard for letters that I use instead. I agree that it is kinda silly & sad that we are this far along in tech for Nintendo not to have some kinda of voice chat.

switch app has been useful. It works well with a Bluetooth keyboard I have connected to an ipad. Only issue is it gets hard to fine a proper surface to work with when using the keyboard and the switch undocked when the tv is occupied. Once I find a nice coffee table then it may be easier.
I haven't used voice chat on the app I'm not sure how well it works so I pass on it frequently.
