This is not a means to spread negativity or an open invitation to start fights. If you're looking to be argumentative, please do so elsewhere. I'm not inciting any masses, I'm only looking for thoughtful discussion. Please do not attack, harass or flame anyone for having an opinion different from yours.

Does anyone have any "unpopular opinions" about this game? Features that you're unhappy with that you wish would change?

Personally, mine is the DLC. I think it's poopy that Nintendo is acting like what was the previous games' full content is "fresh, new" content by breaking it into downloadable updates to force player interest.

What are some of your "unpopular" opinions? Please follow site rules guys!

I think it's a bad miss-characterization to keep saying that they are adding updates to dupe players into thinking they are getting something new. The game was pushed back once due to crunch, we had a pandemic before launch. You are getting the intended content that was always meant for the game.

It just came at the expense of their employees not having to work 18 hour shifts in crunch or risk infection while they prioritized setting up work from home abilities and finalizing what would ship out on the cartridge.

I think your premise is incorrect.

I agree with you. I think the game will end up being great, but there's absolutely no reason why it could not have launched great. I hate how many developers (now Nintendo is on the list) release games that aren't complete. They advertise the updates like they are adding something new in, but really are just updating it to have the exact same features the old ones have that should have been in it anyway. Want to see a game done right? Look at Mario Maker 2. The game launched with everything the original had in it and much more... The updates simply built on to it. It was simply adding more icing to the finished cake. Once NH gets diving and the other leaked updates, then it will be what we picture the game to be.

My mom should move the wifi extender upstairs so I can play online.

There should be an option to organize your storage like all games after Wild World.

sphithix (edit1: excuse me, it's been years since I've used this website and I have no idea how to 'mention' users.) (edit 2: aaaaagh I spelled your name wrong! So sorry!)(edit 3, spelled your name wrong again. I can't read, I guess x) )

I'm talking about features that have established themselves as series mainstays, core features and core mechanics. Please explain to me how, for example, the museum's update that includes an art exhibit was at a launch-game loss, despite eight and a half years of development before this infection started? It's been announced that New Horizons has been in development since New Leaf launched, and I realize that it takes a long time to develop and adjust a new engine (Lunchpack 2) to a new program, but...  Do you really mean to say that Leif's delay was simply because of the infection, as well? And not purposefully aimed to launch during Earth Day's timing? The fact that we had to update more data onto our system memory just to see Zipper T.?

That aside...

Animal Crossing: New Horizons seems to be following a similar structure that Pokemon has. Pokemon (new content, species and old 'mons and features) have been included in the subsequent update that was announced since before the infection's first case was discovered in Japan.

I realize that we're facing unprecedented times here, and I respect your opinion. But it isn't as though all of the development that I'm referring to has been completely de-railed simply due to the unprecedented times we've been facing. The first delay took place six months before this infection hit Japan. Please don't take me for a spoiled brat that wants their video game content now!! now!!! now!!! It just seems as though Nintendo is currently putting water into its solution to stretch content just a bit further than it might have about ten years ago.

I really hope you have a safe quarantine.

I'm sure it was announced then, but I doubt them saying "it's in development" means that day they had a full dev team working on it. You likely started off with a couple people doing story boarding and crafting the premise of the game. Late 2018 is probably when the real development process actually started. An announcement doesn't always mean they have a full churning staff on the project.

Look at the museum, Redd, lief update. That was probably coded and almost ready on launch day. They probably hadn't had time to fully bug test the content and came to a moment where they had to decide what would be in the game for March and what would wait. I know Nintendo is rarely transparent in the moment, but if they came out and offered a reasoning for it I can't imagine it's too far off from my speculation. The game has graphically been rebuilt and the audio was rerecord for the sound effects too from what I have heard.

There has been a fair amount of work put into it but I still rest on the belief that they ran short on time to have the full game ready for the mass data flash of the cartridges for packaging. This game could have had to wrap in February to get ready to be boxed and shipped. It seems the core game was there but we are getting it as they finalize content

I can sympathize for a future me that this stuff isn't on the cart. In 10-15 years when I want to play again and boot up ACNH after Nintendo switch servers are closed I'll probably be disappointed. But I am not going to continue to complain about it in current day. All of gaming is switching to this formula. It's not fun that Nintendo had to for this release but I don't know the full story of what went wrong in the background to fairly criticize their decision. Maybe in a couple years an interview will illuminate us on what happened in the background.

I just think they put off development a while longer than people think, hit crunch way too hard, shipped what they could bug test properly and now we are getting things as it's bug tested.

drinkingwater I agree on the sorting storage. I am glad that we can store more types of items, and more items in general, but I feel it could have been organized better. I wish that if we are using a crafting table in our house that we can automatically access the crafting items in storage, or that things crafted can pop into storage if our pockets are too full.
I think I'd prefer if the flowers followed a sensible breeding pattern, or that there were hints throughout the game, or a herbology "class" paid for with Nook Miles that could build a reference guide accessible in-game that could help show what colour of flowers made what.
I love Blathers lessons on creatures. I feel so bad that his character is reduced to "talks too much" and "scared of bugs".
I don't like the pressure to fill the town with stuff. I think there is too much emphasis on "builiding up the island" rather than leaving most of it natural. My personal style, even in real life, is a preference for integrating my life in to nature over integrating nature in to my life. I'd like my game to be able to reflect that without being penalized with the island rating.
Tom Nook is kind and generous, and willing to sacrifice for you to be able to pay back however much at a time, over however long!! I never realized until I had bills and a mortgage of my own just how good he is to everyone who takes out a home loan!

Not sure if this is unpopular, but I hate how the watering can waters multiple flowers at once. I'm so bad at using it and I just end up missing most of what I intended to water

I prefer using the flimsy can since it waters one flower at a time, but it's annoying how quickly it breaks.

My sentiments exactly.

I think I realized just how differently my views on the DLC differ to the majority when I saw a few people (on other forums at least lol) writing a paragraph thanking Nintendo for graciously giving us new DLC and so promptly. I 100% chalked it up to trolling but as the day went on I could tell people seriously felt that they needed to thank the Nintendo team for doing something we were already promised they would do. Umm...bravo? I totally understand complimenting how they did X, Y, or Z in terms of DLC but acting like any and every piece of DLC is a gift from the Gods is going overboard. This is especially of point when we're talking about Redd. All that DLC did was bring an element to the game that should have been there from release. So color me ungrateful I guess for expecting him to already have been in the base game already.

I have said it before but I would take TTrs figuring out everything while I am still playing week one after the release than sit and hope that a few things I find almost essential to having a good time with AC are eventually going to show up. It would give me more excitement for things I know will come, to come.

My most vocal unpopular opinion is...

Nintendo released an unfinished game. I suspect they knew that to finish it would mean yet another delay or even worse delay(s) in release and that wasn't going to bode well for them. I believe this game was always going to have DLC don't get me wrong, however I feel like they are using it as sort of band aid to patch up NH. For example I don't think they ever suspected that they would be adding Redd as DLC when they were in early to middle development. It was only done once they probably started panic rushing the closer they got to the end of March. Of course this is pure speculation (I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a rumor since it's all coming from my own head) on my part.

Last one before I hit the road...

I would in a heartbeat completely get rid of editing terrain and crafting if that meant we'd get more meaningful interactions with our islanders. I love the idea of building up friendships as away to unlock new dialogue options and options to give them items and have them request treasure hunts etc. People are correct that being a BFF unlocks new dialogue options, but then? Seemingly only days after you start to still only hear the same things from the same personalities. Boring!

I don't know if this really is an unpopular opinion- but anyways

I see a lot of people hating on/disliking Diva. I honestly do not understand why some people dislike her so much. She moved to my NL town, and I don't see why people have such an issue with her. She's really kind to me and is an absolute queen. I've tried to read articles on why people hate her, but honestly I cannot relate to any of them. Diva seems to act so different how they explain it. But she's perfectly fine for me.

Maybe i'm just missing something, but I still don't really get it

For me I think the villagers in new horizons are worse than new leaf. The villagers are more empty. Although I do like the fact they sit down, craft, and more, they dont ask for jobs . Also I experienced repeated dialogue in the first few DAYS of playing.

I 100% disagree with this assumption. The game would have had to have been finalized in February for distribution. You have to have time to flash the game carts, package them and ship them around the world. Also do you think they coded Redd, Lief, paintings, statutes, etc all in 30 days flat?

The most likely explanation is the full game was there but they didn't have time to bug test every part of it to ensure things like being able to build a cliff through the upgraded museum as an example. They likely packaged up what they had finalized as bug free in their testing, then drew out a plan for updates to add the rest of what was already coded. The current pandemic likely pushed their update schedule back some.

You are getting the intended game. Also this is not "DLC". It's a game update. You didn't have to go to the eShop and pay for it.

I'm not a big of the nerf on butterflies and other rare bugs, especially since fishing is trash right now. My job has me working 6 days as week as it is, turning my limited time to play this game into a grindfest for Bells is hardly optimal. Guess I'll just spend all my Bells on turnips then come here to sell them for huge profit.

I don't know if this an unpopular opinion or not, but I dislike how they got rid of established characters for "quality of life" changes. Animal Crossing, to me, has always been a series about the characters, and to have them removed so you can do things quicker is just dumb.

I have two unpopular opinions:
1) Using the Nook Miles ticket to fly to another island is absolutely pointless unless you're just looking for a new villager. I was super disappointed in the lack of creativity and fun things to do with friends that felt like a major step backwards from ACNL.

2) Most of the time the villagers don't have nearly the personality and character that they've had in previous games. So often they cycle through the same exact phrases every day. (Julian tells me, without fail everyday: "That's so weird. I was thinking of you and then you showed up. I'm a magician" ..or something like that) Of course that's not always the case, but I just remember characters having such BIG, in-your-face personalities in other previous titles that now they're more or less pretty similar...

I actually don't mind the mellower Snooties and Crankies of this game. I find it a relief, actually. I feel it sets an example to be supportive (If they're still a little distant...) rather than flat-out mean and/or condescending to others just because!

Just thought of another thing, not sure how unpopular it is, but...
I'm upset about how they handled letters and letter storage in this game. I used to use the letter storage as extra slots for the awards (HRA, tourneys, those kinds of things), and I'd store each villagers portrait with their goodbye letter unless I was displaying it. AND, I used to use blank letters as a way to keep notes with me in-game, usually flower breeding notes, or what my current house design goals were. I'd usually have two letters that were just chilling in my pockets for notes constantly being written, erased, and re-written.
It's all little things, but I think it makes a big difference in the end...
