Aww... just wait until you see some other games! WOW, 2B2T, P2W/P2P games...

"Selling digital currency for $1,000!"

"Selling duped grapples!"

"Crafting a pickaxe, I see! Say, that'll take about 9 hours... but hey! You have 50 Rubies, wanna use 1 to skip that waiting time? Cool!", "Heyyy buddy, you're all outta Rubies. What say you pay $0.99 for one? OR! You can buy the upgraded pack and get 5 Rubies for the cost of 3! OR 10 for the cost of 8... 50 for the cost of 28... 10,000 for the price of 8,000... you'll save $2,000"

"Want to unlock the chest that holds an item required to beat the game? Give us real money."

The thing is... mainline Animal Crossing has never been like that, and although I've seen people sell 100 million  of bells for 199 cents in new leaf before, AC:NH has caused the value of the bell to be comparable to that of the german mark in 1924. I don't want Animal Crossing Online to become an experience that only people with Paypals can experience. Small, in-game entry fees like 100 bells per visit are okay, but I shouldn't have to break out the wallet  just to use an online service i already paid for in a game that has always been about community.

Agreed, the animal crossing economy is all out of wack right now. I'm hoping it will eventually settle down once more players have more items, so then there's less demand for items.

I love trading with people online, but it's really hard right now to determine what a fair price for items is. Simple items that you can order in the catalog for under 5k are selling for 30-100k, which is pretty outrageous.

I think it's rather ironic how NMT have become the new hot currency given that you can only get them by playing the game, but the people who are rushing through the game are too impatient to earn NMT themselves... kind of defeats the whole point of NMT right?

I think a lot of it has to do with today's society in general. It's a money grubbing, get rich quick, screw the other man over society. I also trade on another site and the prices there are WAY more reasonable. Sometimes I forget and offer some crazy price, then catch myself, but it's too late, lol.

I've seen ads on eBay for millions of bells for $10-20, plus tax. It's insane!!

I had an experience last night that made me want to not try for future villager crafting diys. Someone posted a villager was making an item and I was the first person there, but had to wait while 3 other people arrived. I waited, had no choice, but then 2 that came after me went racing around me, ran through flowers, and willy-nilly through everything to get to the villager. The only direction we got from the island owner was 'to the far left' and apparently it was on!! I finally found the villager and waited my turn. When I started talking, another person came to the island, so communication was stopped. After the 5th player got there, I went to speak to the villager again, and was bumped off by someone apparently more desperate to talk to them than me. So, I was the 1st to the island, but 4th to talk to the villager (which I don't care about the order, but it was the disrespect).

I have always helped people out. I've emptied my trees to assist newer players, have them over to buy never-ending seeds. I try to make sure everyone I trade with is happy at the end. Because in the end, it makes me feel good. But people auctioning off their villagers for millions of bells, or selling an item that costs less than 2,500 bells to the highest bidder (3.5 million, btw), makes me realize more than ever...it's just a game.

I'll get off my soapbox now and drop the mike.

This is kind of a controversial topic, but hacking and glitches seem to bring down the value of items to a much more reasonable level. The AC:NH hacking scene exists but hasn't really gotten online yet. Once/if that happens, we should see some steady price cuts.

I personally won't charge an entry fee above 100 bells for any reason, if I even ever charge one at all.

Yeah... the AC hacking community, from what I've seen, is really nice. Heck, they even have rules against trying to make seed items because of all the skids that bricked people's towns instead of trying to decorate their own towns back in WW.

Meanwhile, I'm just here sitting on a ton of DIY recipes thinking if 1k Bells is too high. Plus, I don't wanna sell a recipe to someone so they can sell it for 200k...

...how much should I sell the recipes for? XD

People complained about hackers in Wild World and talked about how it brought prices down in that game, but I think people would have been less upset were there less seeders. (There were even freaking clans of brick seeders!) I hope seeding never returns at that level again if at all. fortunately, I don't see that happening.

yep! those clans are primarily composed of skids (script kiddies). thankfully, across all hacking communities-- black, grey, or white--, skids are heavily looked down on

what is funny to me is that my friends who are playing NH as their first AC game are so precious. explaining to my friend that it's not JUST about fishing and bug catching and fossil digging was a HUGE shock to him lolol. I feel like the AC newbies and the older AC veterans might be some of the ones who are kindest in trades.

^I think the problem now is that we have so many similar games on the market, the new players just go by what the other games do. Back during the first AC game, that wasn't the case. There were a few, but with vastly stark differences.

The first AC game also had the safest method of trading: codes. No need to worry about people mucking up your flowers or dropping seeds. I think that limitation also kept the trade balance in check, at least online. Heck, the commercials even had a Link scene where one person is ridiculing another for an unfair trade. The modern system has a lot more opportunities for what can be traded, and new horizons has removed most of the risks that were present with wi-fi trades in the WW-CF era. (No more running over flowers, seeding, or chopping down every tree in town[w/o permission].)

Yeah it's gotten insane on one of the trading websites I'm on, just so I can kinda see everything that's going on and maybe trade a villager with someone if they have one I want. And some people are charging upwards of one hundred NMT for a single villager? It's madness.
If the main thing someone does in the game is trade stuff, then sure I can understand a small island fee since it's like their business. But there is just a blatant amount of overcharging and being kind of rude at times. I've luckily had only really good interactions with trading on those boards, for now.
I do think, and hope, that once a little more time has passed the community acting this way will settle down and be less greedy, for lack of a better word, but villagers are always gonna be in high demand as people work toward their perfect town so it will likely come-and-go.
I have had good interactions with the people I know playing the game, Amelia was crafting an ironwood dresser last night so I had a few friends hop over and get the recipe from her. And I wasn't gonna ask for anything back but they gave me either DIY recipes or flowers I needed in return.
It also doesn't help that people are going stir crazy from a pandemic and being quarantined or self-isolating, so some also may be acting a little erratic due to that. But we will never know, just gotta hope the dust settles at some time.

I think part of why the community in this game is more ... intense (for lack of better words) ... compared to past games is due to island customisation. In previous games, the things you worked towards like golden tools, complete museums etc. were your only metric of progress. These progressions were very visually discrete; a town that had been explored for 60 hours didn't look that much different to an external visitor than a town that had been explored for 600 hours, at least on a surface level. With island customisation however, the town that you have is an immediate statement on how far you've progressed in the game. I think this had lead to this very competitive aspect not seen in previous games, where people are scrambling like crazy to get their dream furniture, because everyone wants to get that amazing looking dream town that blows all the other ones out the water.

"3 words: Competitive Animal Crossing."
I feel like this is very true lol. One of my friends told me a friend of theirs was about to beat the game and I was like what lol how does one beat animal crossing? I feel like a lot of people who are new to the series come in with this mindset of they're gonna beat the game because that's how so many games are!

How DOES one make something like Animal Crossing competitive? Who are these people trying to one up? Or is it the simple prospect of being "The best" out of so many players that they insist on being so cutthroat in order to reach such a goal?

It's baffling and destructive, I tells you! This is why I intend to make no shortcuts when it comes to progress. It will always be day-by-day, by the book with me. I am in no rush to get a nice town...

Honestly, whatever happened to doing services like letting folks buy something from their shops or allow someone to take a moving Villager simply out of the goodness of their hearts?

Definitely feels more intense with all the different customization options, but I feel like a lot of new players don't know what they're missing from past games. For example villager interactions aren't the same anymore. I got my favorite villager that I've had in all the games and honestly I wasn't even that excited, it's like shes just there with no personality. But people are still going crazy over villager trading

This. I feel like people are focusing on the main gimmick of this game and that's design. They just didn't put as much in to the islanders as they did to design sadly.

I feel that "The race to get something rare nobody else has" has always been there in Animal Crossing, but on a much more personal level, like showing off your house and designs to a sibling or friend. But with social media being as prevalent as it is and with New Horizons hitting it uber-big-time, it seems like people are trying to compete with the whole world. This makes a lot of people insecure about their towns, and causes people to lunge towards a goal with no real end: Having the most impressive town.

Tl;DR: People sure do love their internet points
