this is such a weird and particular question, but i figured this was the best place to ask. i've noticed (or at least i think i have), a trend with individuals being more greed-driven & rude during online play. a lot of the basis for several people has been to make as much money as possible, steal from others, and try to just go uber fast through the game. this isn't to rag on people's play style by any means--rush through the game if that is your pace of playing.

my p.o.v. is that since this is by FAR the most mainstream animal crossing title, has that really affected how people are playing and interacting with each other?

i’ve noticed that people are asking for crazy prices on things, even things as simple as crafting material like wood. i don’t remember past games being like that in the trade boards, not like it has been with this game. i personally am scared to even ask for many trades because some people want an arm and a leg for a simple stack of wood it seems.

i totally agree. additionally, i think there is like a weird competitive edge to everything now. like a necessity to have the most bells, cutest items, best looking town.

Not The Intended Use:
Nook Mile Tickets were meant to be taken straight to Dodo Airlines to visit mystery islands, but due to certain glitches and exploits making Bells easy to mass-produce, "NMTs" have become the de facto currency for online players. You can't buy tickets with Bells (except from other players), so there's no shortcut to generating them; and any that do get produced are quickly consumed by villager-hunters, since tickets are the only viable way to get popular characters that lack an Amiibo, so the number of them in circulation is relatively stable. - TVTropes

I'm tempted to sell some rocks and sticks for the equivalent of a small house, but my storage is about to overflow with all those materials! I'd say maybe 2,000 Bells is a good price for wood and stone, with tree branches given out for free because those have no daily limit

I'd be lying if I said I haven't been tempted to trade NMTs for 99K (I am at something ridiculous right now like 45K lol) to speed along my map progression. But I also don't want to contribute to the madness either. Torn!

It being mainstream has ruined eBay pricing and Amazon. I bought my amiibo cards back in November and December, now you have individual cards selling for $40-$70. Anybody that has a cheap Animal Crossing knock off eraser thinks they have a piece of gold and price it as such. Scalpers are trying to sell the New Horizons Special edition console for $700.

I don't think they ruined the game, but they are ruining the brand around the game certainly.

I do hope they add some sort of Random player encounter option to visiting islands. Joining groups to communicate shouldn't be the primary method this game continues to allow cooperative play.

I need to dig out my dupes...I had over 100 last time I put up a trade list. I bet I could get people to trade now! lol

I am surprised people are paying that much for them. TBH if I didn't have all of them/my favorites I'd be looking at the DIY model.

It's interesting. I'd say a big factor in this is due to the virus and people staying at home and playing AC waaay more than they would have if they were in school or work. But on the other hand with people not working spending even $20 let's say on 3-5 cards is kind of...crazy when you really think about it.

I mean if we're honest all we are looking at here are skins. lol

I have played animal crossing pretty religiously since wild world, and I think that New Horizons going mainstream has actually improved gameplay so much. So many youtubers have been posting towns and homes, and I feel more inspired to decorate than I have in the past. I do agree, though, that the trading has become a bit more competitive. But, overall I think it is driving more creativity. I have experienced so much eagerness to trade than with this game.

This is why, if I'm delivering items to people, I take extra gifts over with me. Ownership of these items is, at the end of the day, denoted by whether a bit is flipped to 0 or 1, and if I have something extra on hand that might make someone else smile and enjoy their time with the game, all the better - I see no point in treating these virtual items like a real-world economy.

"Joining groups to communicate shouldn't be the primary method this game continues to allow cooperative play."
That's by design, though - being a communication game, it's meant to bring people together, and the devs love seeing that happen.

Yeah, though, since everyone's stuck at home, it seems that entertainment spending is up across the board at the moment, so I guess that this is how at least some people are justifying the cost.

I picked up the last single card that I really wanted (Bunnie) as soon as Amiibo support was confirmed, which was back when the German box-art was put online, but though I expected a bit of price-craziness because it happens whenever a new release supports pre-existing Amiibo, I didn't expect it to be on this level!

"I mean if we're honest all we are looking at here are skins. lol"
Gotta catch 'em all!

I've noticed the same - opening up outdoor item placements to any furniture, as in Happy Home Designer, has let people come up with towns that go way beyond what New Leaf's limited selection of Public Works Projects allowed for. I'm really enjoying seeing it and sharing in it with others.

I mostly keep to myself with this game, so it hasn't affected me too much personally, but I will admit I feel a twinge of jealousy when a real nice town shows up on my dash. I just gotta remind myself that those people are time travelling and/or actively trading a lot and I'm not

also one time I got a turnip spike and I was running low on bells so I opened my gates and asked for tips and so many people gave me nook miles tickets! externally I was like "wow thank you so much!", but internally I was like "I don't want these!!! I'm trying to move bridges and houses!!! give me some of that turnip cash!!!!"

I am pretty surprised at how mainstream the game is, I feel like tons of people I know who I didn't even realize had any interest in video games are playing. Which is cool that so many people are into it! I hope it encourages Nintendo to keep making content for NH and in the future encourages them to continue working on the series.

I think it has made certain things like doing the stalk market a bit harder. I pretty much exclusively look for places to sell on ACC or other small forums/communities whereas I used to use some of the larger turnip exchanges that are now unusable due to the large influx of users, thanks in part to websites like Forbes posting articles about the communities lol. For trading as well, I'm just sticking to smaller communities and I've found that to be much easier and more comfortable for me.

The mainstream aspects certainly make the game feel a lot less... cozy. We still don't know everything about new leaf yet (The specifics of grass wear and how villagers move in and out on a concrete level), and now we've got a whole new game with less documentation and an absolute gigaton of new players. Heck, even my mom, who hasn't played a video game since pokemon go, wants to play

"...it seems that entertainment spending is up across the board at the moment..."
True! I guess I am biased as I bought the Switch just for this game. So already spending $380 on the game itself was about as much as I feel like spending on Animal Crossing for the moment.

I can't believe just the final set is selling for $950. When I saw the listing I was like, "Good luck with that buddy..." and then I opened the listing and saw 60 already sold. It's insane to me. lol The fact that I can easily pay off my Switch and the game itself with just my useless duplicate cards blows my mind.

I think you bring up a great question! In New Leaf there was the island that allowed people to actually play mini games with one another. Aside from trading, there isn't too much to do in terms of interacting with other others. I really miss that aspect of the game. There was also the in-game WiiU and 3ds that had minigames similar to tetris and catan. I'm not actually sure if the minig games in those furniture items were added after the major Welcome Amiibo update, but I think they did a great job. I'm really hoping that they'll add more player-friendly interactive multiplayer games. I think that'll make the community a little kinder. Even if it's forcing them to work together to gain rewards

I'm in a couple of facebook ACNH groups, and I can't believe the 'fee' people ask for certain things. Your fairly basic item can be going for 20k, it's crazy! And don't get me started on people who charge an entry fee to visit their island!!!

I love the idea of collecting everything, but jumping onto everyone's island to catalog as much as I can just cheapens it for me. Part of the appeal to me, is the idea of taking it slow and that I may not find the items I want for weeks. I don't catalog anything from anyone. I wait till it's available in Nook's (mine or someone elses) or comes from a balloon, or till I can craft it. I'm not going to pay a stupid amount of bells for something I can get at a normal price just by being a bit patient.

But at least now I know why people are crazy about NMT. I never saw the appeal, unless you want another message bottle (DIY) and resources. Using them for villagers makes sense.

The furniture items themselves, and their accompanying mini-games (one of which was ported over from Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, if I'm remembering right), were added in the Welcome Amiibo update. They weren't in the base game. (The 3DS item is a New 3DS, which base New Leaf pre-dated by two years.)

My general rule of thumb is if People are charging more than 16x (4x is standard price in store) the in-game sell price for that item, then they are ripping you off

(The exceptions being dlc or one-time-only items like golden tools in previous games)

What say you pay $0.99 for one? OR! You can buy the upgraded pack and get 5 Rubies for the cost of 3! OR 10 for the cost of 8... 50 for the cost of 28... 10,000 for the price of 8,000... you'll save $2,000"

I have only had one person visit my town so far. He pulled a bunch of weeds, though I didn't necessarily want him to. I had just recently made the ladder and was slowly working on developing the town. I wanted to enjoy the camping live for a bit. After all, this game somewhat intended for the long hall with a little bit played each day, with some days more and others less.

I don't think the way people are handling the game reflect this community specifically, but more gaming in general. Everyone wants to rush though to "endgame". Youtubers especially need to stay ahead of the curve and have that hot new content.

The problem is that as a community, we reach burnout as players rush through and move on to the next game. At that point, it's hard to find players to play with.

Me, I want to get my moneys worth and enjoy the game.
