Hey all, I figured this was probably the best place to try to ask about this without getting made fun of.

I'm a 22 year old woman and I've loved gaming all my life, but I'm not usually very good at games. Sometimes it feels like gaming is the only thing I'm good at, but sometimes I'm not even good at that. It's gotten to the point where any time something interests me I will search up and down for what everyone else is saying about difficulty, because I just don't have the money to keep buying a game, finding out I'm too inept at it, and being disappointed and put of whatever money I put down for it.

It's not that I'm bad at all games, things where you can make your own strategy or games that really only have one obvious way to get through are okay for me, but it's things like required split second dodging, or quick precision aiming that I struggle with. It makes me upset sometimes because I want to experience what everyone else is enjoying and being impressed by but once I find out that I'm just not up to snuff for it, I can't.

What I really like is games with great story and characters, preferably with easy or story difficulties, or just games where for the most part you can do whatever you want whenever you want to. And I'm not saying I can't handle even a tiny bit of difficulty, it's just when the entire game makes me want to tear my hair out because of my lack of dexterity I can't handle it.

Some things I've enjoyed in recent years that weren't "too hard for me" were Horizon: Zero Dawn, Telltale Games, Dragon Quest XI, Skyrim, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the Dragon Age series, Undertale. I don't even know if things like Pokemon or Stardew Valley or that kind of thing counts because I'm not sure that anyone ever finds them hard, but I'll include them anyway because I did have fun with them. I also like games like Katamari, Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, Murder by Numbers.

I'm looking for recommendations for the Switch and for PS4. I'm hoping you fine folks can help me out!

Strategy is ok, you say?

Last night, I picked up Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for the Switch, which is a strategy game. It and its season-pass are currently discounted in some regions (I'm in the UK, and got both for £15.48, which is less than the current ~£25 going-price of the standard edition on cartridge), and it's a very charming game that I would highly recommend.

It's turn-based, so hopefully shouldn't present any problems on the dexterity front!

From the games you listed, you seem to be pretty good. There are certainly lots of good games out there, free or paid. Do you have Nintendo Switch Online? There is a pretty decent selection of classic SNES games included. My top picks, if you haven't played them would be: Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Kirby's Dream Land 3. None of those are super hard in my opinion.

I don't own a PS4 necessarily, but some games you may like are:

Ace Attorney --> Aviary Attorney
Undertale --> Deltarune
Telltale games --> Life is Strange
Horizon Zero Dawn/Skyrim --> Breath of the Wild , Witcher 3 (easy difficulty)
Fire Emblem --> Valkyria Chronicles, Into the Breach

I've picked up some good indies on the Switch -- most recent was House of Golf that is one sale right now. I heard that Yonder on Switch was good if you like hunting and trading. I also 2nd Mario vs. Rabbids. A little confusing at first. I loved Lego City and that's often on sale.

Kirby Super Star is another good one to add to this list, as the Kirby series' lifelong design ethos has been, and still is, to create games that anyone can complete.

Likewise, Kirby's Adventure in the Nintendo Switch Online NES collection is worth checking out, too. And, non-re-release-wise, Kirby Star Allies for the Switch, for that matter.

Alright, thanks once again for the suggestions, everyone! I'll check them out. I also would like to add that sadly I am one of the people that gave BotW a try but found it too difficult. Actually I was a bit hesitant to try out HZD because of this, because I had heard they had similarities, but I found it easier to grasp somehow.

A friend of mine keeps praising the Witcher 3 and I'd like to play it, but from what I've tried to research before buying it, it looks like dodging and good reaction time is pretty much a requirement even on the easy difficulty? I could be mistaken though, but it's just what I've read. I could at least give it a try while it's still on sale on PSN, I suppose.

I think Life is Strange would definitely be a good fit for me, though!

Hmmm... Not sure about witcher 3 tbh.  I've only played it on the harder difficulties so I'm not sure how lenient the easier modes are.

for ps4  I can easily recommend:

dragon quest builders 2 - for if you like exploration/crafting/building games. I found the battle system in it to be more of a formality. I got away with just spamming attack button lazily
granted I was over-leveled and over-geared most of the time (I usually grind for hours in games that allow leveling up -though it hardcaps your max level during the storyline), so that might have been it? but it's an option if you ever see it on sale.

Persona 5
is an rpg/sim that you might enjoy. Pretty standard RPG elements and they vastly toned down the difficulty from the SMT series, so it's perfect for newcomers to the series imo. pretty sure it has an easy mode option too. (though I heard they are making an expanded version so it might be better to wait for that one to be released to save money? though I have no idea how long the wait would be with all the things going on these days)

EDIT:

speaking of stardew valley, my niece HATES the fishing in stardew valley. she finds the minigame too difficult. thankfully that game allows for mods and I think it has a mod that lowers the mini game difficulty.

if PC is an option then I can recommend these easily: (via steam but they might be on other platforms? dunno for sure)

disgaea 2 (goofy strategy game where you can eventually reach level 9999 and do millions of damage. it can be hysterical)

My time at portia (early access but I enjoyed what I played of it. though keep in mind they said their next expansion will not be free. maybe if you see it on sale or something. I didn't battle in it much (I went nuts on the crafting aspect mostly) so dunno how it goes on that front.

Grandia 2 (rpg with an amazing soundtrack)

Trails in the Sky (1 and 2) (another great rpg with quirky characters)

At least Dragon Quest Builders 2 (and 1), My Time at Portia, and Grandia II (via the Grandia HD Collection) are on the Switch, too.

Yep, they are! I figured that it was worth a mention just in case the portable option is preferred.

Oooh, thanks much for your suggestions! They sound like things I'd enjoy, I'll put them on my list of things to check out!

Honestly price is usually what matters to me first, and usually PS4 games tend to be a little more in my budget, but of course if something is a Nintendo exclusive or if it's an indie that costs the same on each system I'll get it for Switch. Portability is a nice feature though (it's why I bought Skyrim for Switch too), not that you can really make the most of it in the current state of the world

By the way Shiya64, I was once in the same boat as your niece with the SDV fishing, I hated it so much! What finally helped me was tapping the button over and over instead of holding and letting go. I'm glad a mod was able to help her though.

My current computer is an old laptop that is capable of at least running the Sims 4 (I got it when it was free on Origin last year), but it always freezes first at the loading screen and then works fine with minor hiccups after that, so it might be best to wait before I can get a better computer before I try to play anything for PC

Yeah same here. Money has been a serious issue for me for years now so I usually have to wait for sales. (I splurged with getting this game since I know nintendo rarely does sales and I just couldn't wait this time.)

Before this whole pandemic thing, my older sisters would help me by going out on black friday to look for sales. (I've got severe agoraphobia so mall or store visit = instant panic attack, thankfully my sisters are crazy and LOVE crowds and bargain hunting so it works out when I asked them to look out for specific sale items for me and I'd pay 'em back after they got back heehee)

Me too, glad there was a mod that helped her. Thankfully the minigame gets easier when you upgrade the fishing rods, but my little niece was getting so frustrated and upset (I know that feeling. it's really depressing not being able to do something)  so I'm glad that mod helped her out, no rod upgrades needed!

oh geez, it took me years to be able to upgrade to gaming computer.  but still. oof!  for the longest time I had a laptop too and it could barely run terraria at lowest settings, so I know how you feel. ><  Hang in there!

I hope you have fun with the games~!

I'll chime in just because I was thinking of playing it again:

Subnautica!

This game might look intimidating or hard, but it really isn't. There are some challenging requirements toward the end of the game, but those can be overcome with planning and taking your time. Check it out if you like a game you can play at your own pace, and want to swim around a tropical alien ocean. It's a semi-survival, base-building type game where you collect resources to build everything you need, and there is a story with an end goal but you can just endlessly swim around exploring if you want too. You'd want to get it on PS4, from the sounds of your laptop it probably wouldn't run it well (if at all).
