For a game that wants us to play with others, they sure have made it a miserable process.
God forbid multiple people try to come to an island or leave- you're stuck doing nothing.
And for example, just now Celeste gave me a recipe for the moon- I was overjoyed. Then we all got kicked. The person invited us back, but I got flooring from Celeste instead. Why can't saves happen as you progress on someone's island?
Also, "Please close the window" and "wuh-woh!..." are messages I loathe now.
The whole dialog you have to go through with Orville every single time to go an island makes me want to blow my brains out. Yes Orville, I'm by now very well aware of the consequences of sharing my dodo code with non-friends, you don't have to beat it over my head every single time I want to open my gate.
Also the fact you can't send presents to friends unless you visit their town first, completely unnecessary restriction.

Wanted to send my friends gifts but i have to visit them or vice versa first. and whilst the song and dance for online play has always been there, at this point it feels so dated and unnecessary. You should have to read a one time terms and condition and then you can just go online immediately from one button like with every other online game.
"This seems to be a problem with Switch games in general tbh"
I have 35 hours in Tetris 99 and it was never particularly bad, so idk. I don't play many other games online though - in fact Animal Crossing is the only game that's made me wanna get online again. I don't have enough experience with the game to know if drops are intermittent - i've not seen any yet.

Again, this was a thing in New Leaf, but is it really necessary to need to wait 30+ seconds for someone to land in a 2020 video game?

no one is actually constructively critiquing anything. every other thread is someone nitpicking something about the game that just shows their impatience and refusal to just play the game. it's lame. go write a letter to nintendo instead of clogging up the forums with moans and whines.
"it's always been like that. why's everyone so whiny. don't play the game then."
I've hard defended this game in times where other people haven't and there's a lot of quality of life changes and modernisation, but "it's always been like that" isn't really an excuse, and is exactly the issue. Other franchises get with the times when it comes to things like online play, but Animal Crossing hasn't changed, and that's the problem. New Leaf was 7 years ago. City Folk was, what, 12 years ago? Wild World was 15 years ago. The fact that online still takes forever to connect to and is a whole song and dance is dated at this point. The fact that there's still intermittent disconnects is some 2005 Wild World 500 kb/s router tier stuff.
When I can play Stardew Valley, an indie game, and my partner can connect with no fuss, no pauses, no questions asked, in a matter of seconds via online play, there is no excuse. Same with Torchlight 2. And basically every indie game on the Switch. Yet a AAA first party title can't manage it. This is the issue. When it comes to online gameplay, Nintendo are so behind the times it's crazy.

What do you mean this isn't constructive criticism? Nintendo obviously need to take a look at what their contemporaries are doing, I, nor anyone else, can offer "constructive" criticism to Nintendo on how to make their online services better as I personally don't know anything about servers or online gaming from a tech perspective, nor would they read it here if I did and could.

There was always an option to save at any time when playing online in the previous games. Now, the game only saves when someone is leaving or entering the town. So, if you wanted to save and continue playing in a friend's town, you'd have to leave and re-enter.
I don't have many complains with the game so far. I've really enjoyed it.
The biggest complaint I've had so far but haven't said anything is when you and a group of strangers try to go to an island to sell turnips. You run a few steps before you watch someone come and go so it takes a while to get to the TT and back to the airport again.
I was trying to play in local mode and it kept disconnecting me and my friend even though we were right next to each other. We had to switch to Online and rush through everything we already did twice. I don't get why it doesn't save at least what you've done because the saving swirl icon in the top right appears when you're out signaling its saving, soo....
But uh besides that it seems like every other online so far for AC except the visitors are limited to certain things if they aren't your best friend.
I honestly don't know what to do in multiplayer this time around. I go to someones town and just...run around and get bored. at least new leaf, we could go to islands, do tours together, spend a couple hours beetle hunting at night, do club lol. With such big random islands, you'd thing nintendo would allow multiplayer, but nope. Another feature removed without reason
If you have Punchy and are letting him go, let me know <3
Exactly this. Load in times are atrocious now, it’s a major step back. It’s definitely my biggest complaint with the game, and the one I least expect that Nintendo will do anything to fix. I’m hopeful they’ll patch in online saving, if anything.
The online connectivity should not be this disruptive or this stressful. Especially now that we can have up to 8 people playing together at once. It’s just too much. It arguably goes against the overall design of the game.
I don’t know how, but it needs to be made into a more seamless experience, and there SHOULD be more to do with each other.
Hopefully they add some adventure island or cave or something you can do with friends.
Did you know that 4 out of 3 people have a problem with fractions?
