I've personally just been putting every single piece of furniture I can get my hands on outside. making it actually look nice doesn't actually matter as much as how much furniture you have, and it seems like you need a lot of furniture. once I get past the 3 star rating, I'm gonna sell almost all of it and actually start making my town look nice

Drink and snack machines next to my campsite along with a customised log table and matching log benches to create a picnic area A monster statue on the rocks at one side of my island because I felt like we needed a kaiju invasion A lighthouse in a similar location on the other side of the island A fountain in one of the island's more bare spots A stone tablet next to a pond at the island's highest point A utility pole next to Resident Services
Beyond these, I've also started dotting streetlamps and other lighting around the island, and there's some seating, a crafting bench, and some little trinkets around my house, too.
I love those ideas, yes I bought the snack and drinks machine they're adorable!
Gutted I dont have the recipies for outdoor furniture only iron chair and table which I've placed one of each outside all of my villagers houses along with fencing, flowers and a garbage bin. I realised if you give your villagers wreifs they place them on their door which is cute.
I'm having the same issue at 4 Star myself. I don't like items or junk all over the Island for the heck of it. I prefer a more natural look, but also want the 5 Stars. I've been tweaking here and there. I'll put a few items down, check, a week or so later add something else. I've been tempted to put up my last incline, thinking that'll push me over. But am hesitant.
