Before I get bashed for saying this, I will say that I like New Horizons. However, it is disappointing in a few areas that could have made it the best Animal Crossing. Here are my gripes with it:

1. Items breaking. At first I didn't mind it. After a while, it began feeling more unnecessary. By my fourth day, breaking items had become so annoying that it almost feels borderline exhausting running back and forth repairing tools. I personally have always fished at night to get bells, but straight fishing with even the normal rod will last maybe 15 minutes without breaking. In fact, I actually turned it off tonight when my rod broke. I simply didn't care enough to go craft one.

2. The constant item swapping. Okay, I get that in past games, you would alternate frequently between items. However, you only had 3-4 items, from the Rod to the Slingshot. In New Horizons, you have more items than in previous games, with the ladder and pole. Say you see a bug on a hill past a river. You would have to equip the pole to get across, then the ladder to get up the mountain, then the net to catch it. Sure, you get a tool ring, but it is still annoying to swop through. I would have preferred that the D-pad could have had customizable right, left, and down buttons with a preferred item instead of scrolling through (which is almost useless on here, since you are likely to have multiple versions of each item due to them breaking frequently. To get to the item you want, scrolling through right/left on the D-pad is more annoying than it is helpful).

3. No facilities or big changes after the Town Hall. After the Hall is introduced, there isn't much town upgrades that stick out. No big projects, such as facilities, have been uncovered yet from people who have skipped time. Unlike New Leaf, the only town projects available are ramps and bridges.

4. The difficulty has been lowered. Animal Crossing has never been difficult, but New Horizons feels easier than past entries to catch fish. It feels like they have added extra time to pull in the fish than past entries, but maybe it's just me.

5. Repetitiveness from visitors. Since starting my town 5 days ago, Wisp and Gulliver have visited my town twice, with the same exact request to find the same respective items they seek. I played all of the former Animal Crossings, and never remember the same visitors visiting that frequently. In fact, I remember seeing Gulliver once every few months, and the same with Wisp in the original GCU AC. Even though they always had the same request, they never felt stale due to how miniscule they showed up.

6. The music. Prior to New Horizons, my least favorite soundtrack in the series was Wild World (partially due to how much I adored the original AC's music). New Horizon's music is by far the worst. I have sunk a good amount of time in the game the past week, but I still cannot remember any music in the game the second I power it off. Its music all sounds the same. Every track sounds like a rendition of the one before, which was forgettable to begin with. This was a major blow, because New Leaf had magical music.

7. No payoff for major accomplishments. In every Animal Crossing game up to New Horizons, the most prestigious item was, perhaps, the Golden Axe due to it not breaking. In New Horizons, even Golden items break. You heard that right. The game has created a system that has no pay off or reward anymore. Catching all fish now presents you with a recipe for a Golden Rod that will, in fact, break. Why go to all the trouble catching every fish just to get something that is not much better than what you have presently?

And there you have it. I do not hate New Horizons or even dislike it. However, for a game that is taglined at being a "vacation", things mentioned above often make it feel more like a chore, especially compared to New Leaf. For anyone holding their breath for an update, don't count on that. I have been waiting for Nintendo to update Luigi's Mansion 3 with an inverted controls option and has yet to happen, so I'm calling the shots based on the game as is.

I kinda agree on this even though how much i'm currently enjoying the game. There's just so much that felt cut out or dialed down.

1. Why can't we access storage while on other player islands?!

2. As far as I've seem the Exterior of the house is not longer super customize-able. (Only allowed to change roof color/mailbox)

3. No mini-games to play with visitors

Though these are the ones I can think of I firmly agree with your other points. The music is good just not as "Magical". Also Gold Items breaking is just dumb. Should not be that way. You earned it and should count as a major reward!

I agree on most of your points, I too love the game (the atmosphere alone makes it my favourite AC game) but it does need some work;

Fishing rods and Nets have stupidly low durability, I don't know if there's a silver tier equivalent you get before the gold but having to play the majority of the game with your tools breaking every 30 minutes is just a nuisance. In contrast, the shovel seems to the one tool that has infinite durability? I've been using it a lot since the first day and it still hasn't broke yet. Watering cans breaking are also a complete joke.

I really don't understand why they didn't just put the tool ring on the right stick, it would be way easier than having to click up on the d-pad every time. Likewise, the D-Pad is much better suited to camera control on the outside.

Wisp and Gulliver being fixed events seems very disappointing, I was excited when they showed up thinking I got lucky, but then finding out pretty much everyone experiencing the same events on the same day (at least people who started day 1) just sapped the magic out of the experience.

I'm not too worried about the lack of facilities for now, most players who aren't TT'ing shouldn't even have their resident centre, I'm optimistic over time we should be getting them via free DLC. I think that also makes it more fun since people can't just datamine/TT and spoil everything they can get.

1. I agree, I hate the tools breaking so quickly. I assumed there were more tool levels after where I'm at now besides gold, I have 1 level above flimsy, which they all appear like "normal" tools, and the net or shovel will break within a day still. Flimsy tools are practically pointless unless you just need it in a snap. Also why would you ever customize your tools with another color if it's just going to break and you have to customize it again? I made a yellow net just for fun and it broke and then I felt like why would I waste even 1 custom box on that?

2. I also felt like I was swapping items a lot between the pole, ladder and whatever tool I'm mainly using. Luckily though it seems like after bridges and slopes are built you'll need them less, and even someday put them entirely away.

3. They really staggered it this time, I hope they send out frequent updates to add more. It seems like it's not possible that this is it or that updates will add practically nothing. In fact I think it will be the opposite, updates that can include more amenities to build. I refuse to believe they'd axe all these long time well known characters and locations just to leave us with slopes from Isabelle and a museum that takes days to launch....

4. Yep, fish seem easier to catch for sure. I've seen other people mentioning it. I'm not sure how to feel about it, as someone who only ever completed the museum in NL I feel more good about it I think than bad lol

5. I felt the same about NL though. After you get all of Gulliver's prizes, and realize Sahara only sells crap in NL, then there's only Pascal who also sends limited things, and you don't need Redd anymore after you get all the artwork. But I do find Wisp at this point widely useless. It seems like no matter what options you pick you just get something random. I think the issue is that everyday there is suppose to be a visitor, and Gulliver, Sahara and Mable are the only ones who can show up yet, and you can get them each twice a week, and then 1 gets a 3rd visit in a week. If you open the Able Sisters shop that reduces 1 visitor until they add more. Wisp seems to be a nightly visitor either way though? The same thing with NL though, Gulliver would show up sometimes several times a week that I'd just ignore him and let him sleep on the sand cause I was tired of the long conversation to get an item out of him.

6. I saw people saying the music becomes hourly music once you built the town hall?

7. I always felt like the reward was just playing the game. I can't say I recall the game giving out massive reward for completing certain milestones before. Maybe a commemorative item for the day, or the statues for paying off your house in the Gamecube game.

the shovel seems to the one tool that has infinite durability?

Not infinite, but it does seem to last longer. I certainly broke my yellow handle shovel. I also felt the same about the Net lasting a while but that too broke shortly after the shovel, so I'm guessing all tools break at the same rate? Or at least those 2 do.

I have read somewhere that customizing your tool resets the durability, so I think I'll try testing that out today. I customised my shovel a few days ago which might explain why it hasn't broke yet. I read a little more into shovels, seems they only lower in durability when hitting rocks or digging fossils.

I have never even thought of that, but you're right. It is pointless to customize your items when they break 30 minutes later. I'll have to try that too, and see if it boosts the durability. Also, yeah it does seem like the shovel lasts a lot longer than the rest of them. I cannot fathom why Nintendo let the watering can break. It doesn't even make logical sense.

I hate to agree...but I do.

I am having fun with it but I am not hooked, wanting to play 24/7 like I was with New Leaf and a lot of it is down to simple bulky gameplay mechanics. I would be fine with tools breaking if that eventually would stop when you get golden tools. It would make it feel like you really accomplished something. I am torn between keeping double tools in my pockets just in case or actually using the space to hold other items. I also do not like the extra 'tools' added because cycling through tools takes SO long right now. I unlocked the tool wheel and it's not much help at all IMO.

Why give us the option to DIY in our houses when we STILL have to manually get out the materials each and every time? This one annoys me a LOT.

I also think it's a weird and bad idea to give us all these shop options in New Leaf and to not offer equivalent options in the next game. It does feel a bit backwards. They don't have to be the same shops but there should be something.

Also, the islander interactions just feel a little hollow. I feel like they rarely come up to talk to me and if I press them for conversations they're just...boring. They lack the character - the funny and quirky responses from games past.

I really hope they spam us with DLC and that said DLC knocks my socks off because I so badly want to love this game.

ETA:

Pikminsatellite :

Oh gosh. I didn't even think about tools breaking after you customize them! Yikes. Thanks for the tip though. That's one game mechanic I will abuse if it works.

As far as the shovel lasting longer I think it's just an illusion because we use the shovel less as there aren't a lot of rocks. But that's just my assumption.

I agree for the most part too. And I totally relate to #4. I've lost fish because it's been ingrained into my head that if I don't reel INSTANTLY after the *plop* the rarer fish just nab the bait and are gone. It causes you to get trigger happy sometimes and reel when they approach without biting. But with this game you have enough of a time window with any fish that you don't have to slam the button down after the bite. So now I really gotta learn to kick this habit.

Imagine if the two games were reversed, New Horizons was for the 3DS and New Leaf was for the Switch. That would be a progression, because this definitely feels like it is a step back. It's important to note that New Leaf was a complete game on launch and we weren't all holding our breath for future updates that Nintendo may or may not give us. We already gave them our money after all.

But yeah, it's definitely a legitimate Animal Crossing game and probably worth what its cost but with previous games we didn't even have to make that evaluation. This is acceptable rather than amazing.

I agree that the tools breaking is very annoying especially when you are trying to go for that fishing miles, but I am to understand that the durability is longer the higher quality the tool is.

Also about the gold tools breaking, well yeah if it is a craftable item I can see why, think about it, no one will need to get a "perfect town" anymore and could just pay that one person who had to craft them a set of gold tools then they are set for life. The fact that you can do this is a bonus, fancy giving your friend a golden rod to help them get that achievement then fantastic, but knowing that rod will eventually break, means it will give them something to work towards themselves, rather than keep bothering you for a new one, and even still wouldn't that encourage people to go to each others towns more often?

- Why can't we access our storage from other houses.
Well that would make it way to easy then wouldn't it? Just go to your friends island and grab 100 items for them to catalog and the such, or store a load of stuff to take back to your island. nah thats not a good idea at all. However I do agree there should be a better way of using materials you have in your house storage (it knows its in there) when crafting.

- About the shops / public works projects
I haven't read anything that Time Travellers / Data Miners have released in this game, as I really don't want to spoil it, but as it stands I have only just got the announcement that the resident service building is going to change tomorrow, now I don't know what shops are or aren't available yet, and to be honest I don't really care, the fact that in New Leaf, I actually think there were too many shops, did we really need a seperate garden shop? did we really need a shop just for home decor? couldn't these have been expanded on existing buildings?

And another thing, New Horizons is a single island, there is no "town" to go to, so could you imagine how cluttered your town will be if you had to build a Gracie shop, brewsters cafe, shoe shine shop ect... I only have the museum and the shop atm, and 5 villagers houses and it is already feeling a bit more "crowded" I personaly like the fact that it won't be cluttered with these other stores. I welcome them being "added on" to another building, the Musuem looks like it has plenty of room for expansions, I assume the shop will be expanded to include more options.

Personally I am glad that New Horizons has "gone back to basics" it is still supposed to feel like a "paradise" island.

Now as for the frequency of special guests, I do agree they seem to be a bit more frequent at the moment, So far in the 5 days I have been playing, I have had Harvey (I think everyone does though), Gulliver and Sahara is visiting right now.
I also noticed the frequency of ballons are more often now, but I don't mind that, as that is free stuff.

But all that being said, you have stated your opinions well and thats good, I am still in the "honeymoon period" with this game so I am very much in that fan-blinded "it can't do no wrong" stage atm.

EDIT:

"It's important to note that New Leaf was a complete game on launch and we weren't all holding our breath for future updates that Nintendo may or may not give us. We already gave them our money after all."
Well the only "updates" they are planning are the seasonal events, maybe to help prevent being offensive, they are releasing the events on a per region basis? that way the game you have maybe customised to just your area? For example, I don't celebrate "turkey day", but instead in our region we celebrate "Fireworks night" around that same time. Now I don't care if I get "American" holidays in my game, but I know there are people that would, and Nintendo know that to.

That and it is a great way to stop people from Time Travelling to these events to get the "exclusive items"

If color resets durability that's good but I almost doubt it. I feel like that would have been mentioned of all things. Also you can't calculate how deteriorated your tools are just by looking at it, so how can you tell when it's worth changing the color? Would be interesting to know if it has a set number of uses or if there's a relative number. I have only used the regular axe a couple times, so I haven't seen if that cracks like in previous games when it's been used, but the other things don't appear to show any signs of breaking down.

If that's actually a concern they had they could make it so you could only do so in your own home, on your island and only for building materials. Problem solved. But it's not at all a matter about being 'too easy' or 'too hard' to me. It's just a gameplay mechanic, not a skill. Would you say organizing the tools in a more efficient matter would make the game too easy? No. It's about something mundane we have to do almost daily in the game being less boring IMO.

+-----+

tujunga :

I'd bet you a dollar that there are people out there who are counting the number of uses 'X' tool takes before it breaks. Thus, they know the paint job adds uses. Or it could be drastic enough to be able to tell without counting. I never counted how many uses it took my flimsy axe, net, shovel to break but I can tell you for sure the regular equivalents last longer.

According to this reddit post , there is a set number of times the tools work before they break. So next time I'm on I'll catch 29 fish with a new rod, change the colour, and see if it breaks on the next catch.

edit: Just further down that reddit post someone also said customizing resets durability, I'd still like to try for myself then maybe post a PSA later on, if someone doesn't beat me to the punch that is

Oh that actually answered a bunch of questions I had about "uses" if you miss or hit a tree with no more wood.

I mean I understand about someone counting it, but visually speaking there's no effects so you'd have to manually count it instead of having an in-game indication like the axe traditionally had.

This is a very good point actually, and the golden tools in AC:WW and New Leaf came into the game once, and only once. If you lost it, tough luck, you already got your golden tool and you should have taken better care of it.

Of course many players didn't really reflect upon that intended reality since golden tools were made plentiful online with duplication and hacking.

But I still think unbreakable golden tools could still exist in this game, though perhaps the criteria should be raised. 30 gold nuggets instead of 1, for instance. That's a punishing enough grind that people aren't going to be crafting them for their friends. They'll do it once, so they have the unbreakable tool and won't look back thereafter.

In some sense they took a realistic route with golden tools being breakable, gold is actually a soft metal. Easily malleable that needs alloy to be strong in most cases...

I think the true answer to this is as the OP kinda suggested that the Gold tools are unbreakable and are not craftable, you get the tool for completing the task (as past games) and thats that.

It won't matter if it were 1 gold, 10 gold or even 100 gold, if someone wants that unbreakable tool they will farm the required items for that player to craft it, and throw some bells into the mix too. I know I would be tempted. If farming all that gold once means I can get an unbreakable tool then I will probably go for it. And if I was the one with the gold tool recipies I would gladly take 10 minutes out of my time going to someones town (or letting them to mine) and craft them a golden tool, it isn't like I have to run a massive dungeon and fight a massive monster to complete it. and if Bells are being offered even more so reason to just take a little time out, I can be a millionare by the end of the week, the ACC boards will be filled with (if they won't already) Selling Gold crafting services.

So yeah in short, its best if they were the ultimate reward and unbreakable / uncraftable

forgottenpixel

I think there maybe some confusion going on, so let me clarify, I thought we were on about being able to access our "house storage" from anywhere at any time, which is why I said that would be a bad idea, and it would be pointless having the pocket upgrades, so I can see why we have to go into our own house to "collect" the items.

HOWEVER, I do agree that if there are crafting materials in your home, then there should be a way to use them anywhere, or maybe they could be stored seperatly to what you are holding? It is a pain in the bottom to have to keep switching between your storage and personal inventory just to make a new axe. And I wouldn't mind if this feature was limited to your own island.

I totally agree with you and I'm glad you said it.

This is my biggest gripe:
"3. No facilities or big changes after the Town Hall. After the Hall is introduced, there isn't much town upgrades that stick out. No big projects, such as facilities, have been uncovered yet from people who have skipped time. Unlike New Leaf, the only town projects available are ramps and bridges."
I think New Leaf had a lot. Obviously wasn't a perfect game, but with the inclusion of many NPCs and the main street area, I really enjoyed that aspect. In CF I even enjoyed going to the city. I miss the island mini games and unlocking it in general.

They've spoke about future updates and DLC and what not and I'm hoping they will include some stuff then.

I agree and disagree with some of your points. I still feel I've yet to form an opinion on whether or not the game is better than New Leaf as I haven't unlocked everything, and there's some small quality of life changes I adore such as items stacking, being able to store bugs and fish in storage, placing items outside and bells going immediately into your wallet when you pick them up, as well as some other little changes that I can't think of off the top of my head.

"Items breaking. At first I didn't mind it. After a while, it began feeling more unnecessary."
Yep, I thought it was an interesting game mechanic early on but it just feels, as you put it, unnecessary. Given the lack of urgency in Animal Crossing, and the fact that you can very easily get access to the materials needed to craft, it's just a time waster for the most part.

"In New Horizons, you have more items than in previous games, with the ladder and pole. "
Once you unlock bridges, you don't need to bother with the pole vault anymore.

" Sure, you get a tool ring, but it is still annoying to swop through."
Not really? You just have to press the direction and it'll immediately swap to that tool. I actually think the Tool Ring is a fantastic change.

"No facilities or big changes after the Town Hall. After the Hall is introduced, there isn't much town upgrades that stick out. No big projects, such as facilities, have been uncovered yet from people who have skipped time. Unlike New Leaf, the only town projects available are ramps and bridges."
If that's true, that does suck and is an obvious downgrade. I'm not much of a town beautifier myself, I'm a hoarder and collector, so i didnt massively bother with the projects in NL, but for people who do care about them, this is lame.

Edit: Actually, nevermind. I disagree with this too. You can place furniture outside. What is the point in town works projects? Just switch them to being furniture items. It's more customisable, you can move them around and overall is easier to use.

"The difficulty has been lowered. Animal Crossing has never been difficult, but New Horizons feels easier than past entries to catch fish. It feels like they have added extra time to pull in the fish than past entries, but maybe it's just me."
Feels no different to me, I don't know. Fishing in Animal Crossing has never been particularly tough though. Maybe this is just a placebo. Because you seem rather disappointed, that's rubbing off on aspects that really aren't all that different.

"Since starting my town 5 days ago, Wisp and Gulliver have visited my town twice, with the same exact request to find the same respective items they seek."
You've just had bad luck. This isn't the game's fault. My friend has seen Saharah, I've seen people who have had Kicks, etc. I personally have only had Gulliver. Some people say the event days are scripted but that doesn't seem to be the case

"New Horizon's music is by far the worst."
I 100% agree with this. Their only seems to be one track for outside unless I'm going crazy, and it gets so repetitive. I am disappointed over this, not sure what they were thinking.

"Why go to all the trouble catching every fish just to get something that is not much better than what you have presently?"
Because you're not getting the Golden Rod for catching every fish. You're getting a RECIPE to make one which IS permanent in itself, and the Golden Rod has massively increased durability over the regular and flimsy rods. As I said, I don't necessarily like the durability change, but it's a reward and an upgrade nonetheless. If it was an item straight up given to you with no recipe i'd agree with it being permanent, but the issue is, as stands, as someone else stated, if it was permanent as a craftable, people would just Time Travel through to completion, craft them and sell them to other players.

I definitely agree on tools. I don't think golden tools should break, that was the whole point of the golden axe for years.

new horizons  combines a lot of the features brought by new leaf, happy home designer, and pocket camp  yet takes some away that baffle me . we go from happy home designer + new leaf's  fully customizable house exterior to seemingly less options I'm hearing.

I love the emphasis this game gives Tom Nook, as I felt he was relegated to the background in new leaf, but there are also very mysterious absences of characters that have been a part of the series since it began  - pelly & phyllis, tortimer,  to name a few.

not to mention where are the

i think its important to keep in mind the music changes to hourly music that cycles throughout the day like the series is known for after the town hall, according to people who have time traveled past the first week . I think we shouldn't pass full judgement on the soundtrack yet, though I do think it was an oversight of theirs to leave us with this same guitar riff for basically a week until we get the hourly music . . .

Okay customizing tools 100% resets their durability, I caught 29 fish, changed the colour, and the rod didn't break after another 10 catches. Still a pain ofc, since you can't keep track of how much you've used the rod without manually keeping an eye, but its much less of a hassle to keep some customiser near a work bench than to go through the whole flimsy tool -> normal tool cycle over and over.

There used to be a fish counter tool via the Timer back in Wild World. It existed in later games but counted after rather than as you caught in those games. It felt mostly useless, but hey.... there might be a use for it now. Too bad its been removed.

I didn't know about this actually as I don't time travel. That's a little better, though I play roughly 3-4 hrs every day, so hearing 4 hours of that riff really drives me crazy.
