we're just over a month away from the game coming out, so we're all gonna need town names soon. one of my favourite ways to make town names is to just combine two short words that sound nice together. I made most of this list back when NL was fairly new, so I just added some more words to it. Please feel free to add words that I didn't think of! just try to keep it to 5 letters or less so they can be combined easily into an 8 letter name (unless we find out we can have longer town names in NH)
Island/Water words: 3 letters: Bay, Sea, Wet 4 letters: Isle, Tide, Dock, Port, Boat, Ship, Sand, Lake, Flow, Damp, Pond, Palm 5 letters: Shore, Shell, Beach, Pearl, Ocean, Moist, River, Water, Coral
One really important question that hasn't been answered yet...
Will "Island" automatically be added to the name we type in??
This was the case for the Gamecube's island, and, not knowing this, I named my island "DK Isle" (I loved Donkey Kong at the time), then Kapp'n kept calling it "DK Isle Island" and I couldn't change it!
I have a feeling they will automatically add "Island", which means we get the full 8 letters to not have to use it or its abbreviations.

If island is already added, i wanna name it "The" so it will be "The Island"
although I might name it "The" regardless.

Ard I was just wondering the same thing! I kinda want the word ISLE at the end, but am hesitant because what if they automatically add ISLAND when speaking the name.
((OK, is there a reason to hope that the person you are trying to respond too has the name highlighted/colored? Do they see that someone is responding directly to them? Some times the names just appear in a different color, but lately they are the same as the text. ))
Wanted to add, THANK YOU Chiyoko! So sweet of you to take the time to post this. It helps get the old brain thinking.

You can add a link to a user's profile by inserting the @ symbol before their username.
penelopePINK if you put an @ before typing the name it makes the text blue and creates a hyperlink to that user's profile, but I don't think they get notified in any way. I just do it by habit bc it notifies people if you do that on tumblr or twitter
glad you guys have been enjoying it! too bad I can't edit the post because I keep thinking up more words when I can't sleep at night. I wasn't planning to start thinking about my town name this early, but my old post from 5 years ago started getting notes again and I just had to update it, and now looking over this new list I keep coming up with ideas.
also I wrote in the first post that I "just added some more words" to the old list, but I took the time to count and I actually more than doubled its length whoops

in the direct they showed a map with the town name Nintenland which means town names can be up to 10 letter long! I'm gonna update this list after work today with some six and seven letter words!

It might mean that it can be more than 10 letters too.

I was a little bit confused about that, because didn't they refer to the place as "Ninten", at one point? Does that mean that two different places, "Ninten" and "Nintenland", were used, or that "land" automatically gets added to island names?
I might have to watch through it again to see if I missed something...
^yeah I noticed that too. I think maybe they're just using multiple islands in the direct? one named ninten, one named nintenland and one named acorn. there might've been more, but that's what I caught

okay now I'm home and have time to look closely at the direct again. the town for most of the direct is called Ninten. it's seen at multiple points in the direct, including at the top of a map. during part three of the direct when they talk about couch co-op, there is another map with the town name Nintenland. the two maps are just short of identical so it's probably the same dev build town both times, but we can safely say that "land" isn't just a thing that gets added to your town name on the map

Awesome find! Thanks for double-checking it!

Angie just watched the video on the new switch animal crossing looks great. Unfortunately I don’t have one. I am sure pocket camp will lose a lot of people on this one. There is so much you can do on the island besides interacting with other players. Have fun

All I can tell you is that in Japanese "island" does get automatically added, just as "village" was automatically added in NL. So Ninten is actually shown as Nintentou (-tou is the suffix for island and is in kanji, such a silly pun still amuses me ). When referred to in dialogue, Ninten is in a different color, yet when they show the map, it says Nintentou (Ninten is in English, tou in kanji).
I've already got names for my islands picked, but I like to think of someone inputting your lists into a generator, thanks for that!
