Originally started by Sonnic to discuss the Switch way back when it was just a concept in 2016.

Basically anything to do with the Switch.

So have at ye!

So apparently, the animated Super Mario movie is still on track for 2022, with confirmation that Nintendo is jointly funding the film alongside Universal Studios.

Am I the only one wondering if they'll have a new mainline Mario game for the Switch waiting in the wings to launch close to the movie?

Link to the previous thread for anyone searching for old posts.

Regarding the AC:NH edition Switch a few people mentioned in the previous thread, I realise I'm in the minority here, but I just can't stand the colour scheme. Especially the green Joy-Con - it reminds me of the sort of pale sickly painted walls you see in late-20th-century schoolhouses that always smell faintly of cabbage. Perhaps it looks better in person, but I suspect not.

Apologies to anyone put off by the mental image.

In other news, this might not be terribly interesting/relevant for many people here, but remember I mentioned a while ago that Nintendo were being sued by the German and Norwegian governments for not allowing refunds on eShop pre-orders? Well, unfortunately their local district court has ruled in Nintendo's favour, the judge's opinion being that preorders are more like a service than a product because you're essentially hiring Nintendo to provide you with a game on such-and-such date. Needless to say, this is a fairly absurd argument, so Germany has filed an appeal to take the case to the ominously-named Frankfurt Overcourt. Sadly this might not be heard for up to 18 months.

Gotta say, as nice as it would be to have Nintendo finally be forced to play by the same rules as all the other gaming platforms sometime in the near future, a part of me wants this to go all the way up to the European Court of Justice so that lawmakers have to finally properly define "product" vs. "service" in the context of digital goods. The existing law was mostly written like 15 years ago and didn't really envisage a future where software would be sold and distributed without a physical medium being involved, so there are a lot of grey areas.

I'm sure there will be one out sometime near the launch of the movie, I doubt it will be a tie-in though, I'm guessing an Odyssey sequel.

The whole digital pre-order cancellation thing is ridiculous on Nintendo's part. Especially when you consider their competitors like Steam where you can still get an automatic refund up to 2 hours after playing the game.

Has anyone been using Ring Fit Adventure? I've been using it on-and-off over the past couple of months and it's been great, I feel like I'm getting a solid workout out of using it. Obviously it's not a total replacement for the gym or going out on a run, but if the weather is miserable or I can't bothered driving out to the gym its pretty much the best alternative.

That's precisely what I'm expecting, too. Well, that or a new standalone title that re-uses Odyssey's engine, anyway.

I think we'll get an "Oddysey sequel" too.  The game looked amazing and played so smoothly that it would be a shame not to get another game using the same mechanics. It would also be interesting to make Peach playable since they kinda built that backstory a bit with her traveling from kingdom to kingdom at the end of the game.

Also, Stickying.

if they did make odyssey sequel, there should've been a new villain or rather make the same way as galaxy which it would include luigi as a playable character instead of peach.

An Odyssey sequel with new villains sounds about right. As much as I'd want one, though, I'm more interested in a new Mario Kart. It'll soon be six years since Mario Kart 8 first appeared, with the Switch not really having its own. 8 Deluxe is fine, but has offered nothing new except for its battle mode (which was a welcome addition). It's time for something new, and I hope this year provides.

You and me both! I play a lot of Mario Kart, and it hardly seems right that a pretty-looking cash-extraction application for mobile phones, part of whose purpose is to bring new customers to Nintendo's hardware, gets new Mario Kart content, while people who actually bought the Switch don't.

Finally picked up Luigi's Mansion 3. I'm taking a trip in a few weeks to visit my home town, and my long-time friend said he wanted to try that game so I bought it for that reason.

But I like it so far! Feels oddly nostalgic; I haven't played Luigi's Mansion since my Gamecube days. But it's really different from that version so it's exciting enough.

Mario Kart Tour is worse than the Arcade games, but that's more because I don't feel a connection or engagement with it. At least in the Arcade games - despite how easy they are - there's engagement. Tour only lets you control turning and items, and half the time it doesn't even work right.

Switch Bundle preorder were put off indefinitely in Japan due to effects from Coronavirus just an hour before I was going to go to a store to ask about them.

But the release date will remain the same.

Weirdly, NoA's Youtube channel already has an unboxing video of the upcoming Animal Crossing Switch. It's part of their Nintendo Minute thing, they say it's thorough (so spoilers for those who want to be surprised when they unbox their own, I guess), and I haven't watched the whole thing because I find the hosts annoying.

*edit: Taiko no Tatsujin has 2 new DLC packs coming out in Japan on the 13th: Vocaloid Pack 4 (5 songs for 500yen) and Tenki no Ko pack (3 songs, 400yen).

GoldenCelebi: The court ruling really is outrageous. Laws are always behind the times, especially when tech advances so quickly.

"it reminds me of the sort of pale sickly painted walls you see in late-20th-century schoolhouses that always smell faintly of cabbage."
What kind of schools do you have in the UK?!

StarlitGlitch: Aww. I heard they were supposed to start taking pre-orders today (yesterday? Feb 8), but had to push back the pre-orders date to an unspecified time. Er, at least you saved a trip? Hope you'll be able to pre-order yours!

*Seriously, hope the Coronavirus is treated soon.

Heh, darn the limit of 90 minutes for editing.

Ok, so AC:NH is up for pre-purchase on the US and JP eShops for sure. Should also be up for other regions. I am immensely displeased the US eShop is only listing English, Spanish and French, while the JP eShop has pretty much all the major languages Nintendo usually provides. (Why should I care? Because I like checking things out in other languages! )

Portal Knights has DLC, most paid, some free. I must've missed it when this happened, because I remember people being angry they couldn't get the various DLC that were only available through pre-orders on other platforms. I only became aware when I saw an article for the new Weddings and Galas free DLC. Other freebies are Forest Animals box and Box of Fantastic Headwear. There've been a few large updates in the past year or so, and is up to version 1.6.3. (Gah, no time!)

And yet, still no word on whether we can change the language within the game...

That German listing named (probably I didn't check) all of the languages that the game will be coming out it, but it's hard to say if that means each game copy has that or just that that's what the game is offered in.

I went ahead and pre-purchased ACNH yesterday and it downloaded. So now the icon sits on my home screen for six weeks, tempting me...

Anyone else sometimes try to launch it, just in case?

StarlitGlitch - Those are the languages that are included in each copy. Most Switch games use the language that your system is set to.

This is great news! Sorry for posting in both threads on the same thing, not sure what I was thinking.

I'll finish up my thoughts on the other thread to stay on topic, sorry guys.

But also I asked around on TheBellTree and I figured out about setting up a profile for each Nintendo account so that I can access the NA one and the Japanese one!

I'm not terribly surprised that there are different versions of AC:NH on different regional eShops. It would be very difficult otherwise for them to do regional events (like they did in AC:NL with Daeboreum, Naughty-or-Nice Day, Tanabata, Groundhog Day and so forth).

It's surprising in this case because the US eShop is the only listing that appears to suggest that languages have been removed. The UK/EU and Japanese eShops both list the game's full selection of languages.

^ Right, NA seems to have the least options for languages. Other regions do have slight variations of which languages are offered, but why are there so few for NA?

(unless if I'm mistaken, Portuguese is only offered in a couple of regions, for example)

Oh, I see what you mean. Hmm. I just looked through my international eShop accounts and can report that the languages listed are as follows:

UK: Japanese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Korean, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional). This matches the description on the back of the leaked German box.
Japan: The above, plus Portuguese (!?!?)
US: English, Spanish, French

It is quite baffling. I especially don't see why Portuguese would be included in the Japanese edition but not the European one.

I think this may be another of those cases where we don't know what's going on until release day.

Yeah, and for all we know, this could just be a clerical error on the various eShops. I mean, we know that these things usually use just one program that gets submitted to all of the ratings-boards, which is why this looks so weird.

I already dislike how Nintendo basically isn't promoting games like this at this time - they could've avoided a whole lot of concern about things like this, save backups, and possible DLC (of the bad microtransactions kind, not the good expansion kind that gets released much later), by just being clear in their communications like they are with most of their other games, but as it is, barring snippets uncovered by fans in region-specific paper ephemera, we basically haven't heard anything new about the game since last E3 (the September trailer was more of a recap than anything new).

My best guess would be a clerical error too. (Maybe they decided to add a Portuguese localisation at the last minute?) I think what's most likely is that the CJK and PAL versions of the game are all the same internally, and the regional events you get are dependent on the language you use. So people playing the "International Edition" in Japanese would get Tanabata, Otsukimi etc., Koreans would get things like Daeboreum and Eobeo-i Nal, the 8 European languages would get Naughty-or-Nice Day if it returns from AC:NL, and Chinese players presumably something new (Lunar New Year?). Then players of the "North America Edition" would instead get Groundhog Day, Earth Day, Labor Day etc., no matter what language they used.

This would match the AC:NL regions, which were:
Japan - Japanese
Korea - Korean
Europe/PAL - English, Spanish, French, German, Italian
North America - English, Spanish, French

Each combination of region & language had its own slightly different set of events (e.g. the German Father's Day is in May while the Italian one is in March), but there's no overlap in languages between the CJK and PAL versions. So I can see that they might want to combine those into one single edition for ease of distribution - keeping the NA version separate because they need a way to tell whether a given English player should get the American holidays or not.

As for why the "North America Edition" doesn't include any other languages, even though the text is presumably substantially the same, I doubt it even occurred to them that some people might want to play in a language not commonly spoken in their region.

When Nintendo Support UK opens tomorrow I'll ask about Portuguese and get back to you!
