It looks like we're going to see some new Animal Crossing merchandise really soon, as there's going to be an Ichiban Kuji merchandise lottery for the game, which is due to start the day after the game's release.
The prizes include things like cool-bags, towels, a mini table, and various other travel items, but there are no pictures yet. The source-article at Japanese Nintendo, as linked above, states that it will be updated when those are available.
Good luck to anyone in Japan who buys tickets for this! For the rest of us, the items might end up popping up on the likes of Yahoo! Auctions Japan and Mercari, so keep an eye out.
My daughters Japanese teacher keeps telling us that the 7-11’s has & does cool stuff over there. It be so cool if she was there during the event. Although no clue how their lottery system works over there. Heck I never do the lottery here.
Carlton Lassiter: I thought I told you no.
Shawn Spencer: But your eyes said yes. - Psych
Carey - As far as I know, it's not the same sort of lottery as the ones with monetary prizes that are run in the UK, US, and so on. It's more similar to a raffle, if I understand it correctly.
With these merchandise lotteries, my understanding is that you buy a sealed ticket, usually costing 500 Yen or so, at a convenience store, open it there, and you can then collect your prize there if you win something. I'm pretty sure that you'll always win at least a small prize, though.
If your daughter is going to be visiting Japan, she'll definitely get to see something like this, even if it isn't the Animal Crossing one - they change the prizes for these things every month, apparently, so they must always be running.
The last one we had was last spring and I picked up quite a few items over here. I bought a lot of tickets in stores but mostly got lower ranked items so then I went over to Mercari to get the rest of what I wanted
Of course, there's also the Nintendo store in Tokyo that has a bunch of cool AC merch as well!
I'm definitely going to be picking up some items... I'm also getting e Switch bundle (if there is one) for AC the day before so my wallet is going to get quite a bit thinner that weekend
Some things to keep in mind if you want to do it in person:
Not every 7/11 has it. I was lucky and found one while on vacation that had it, but after that when I got home me and my friend went through dozens before we found another store that had it (I tried out in my town, my friend tried in Tokyo).
As the site says it's 650 per ticket this time. Each ticket guarantees an item. But, each item has a different level of rarity. Last time it was rank A - G. Typically the lower ranked items will have multiple designs, so even if you keep getting the same rank you could pick out different designs. There's a set number of each item per store.
There's also the special "last item," the last ticket bought in each store gets a very special prize! Last time it was an apron like Tom Nook wears. The Ichiban Kuji before it (the first AC one) has a tea pot!
There might be somewhere on ACC where you'll see some pictures and information on this very shortly
