I’ve been reading up on the game and it looks like you have to have a paid membership into Nintendo Switch Online. That is very disappointing. Especially considering it wasn’t necessary in previous games. I’m hoping its only focused on the multiplayer aspect of the game and not required to get the most out of the game (fruit, clothing, furniture, etc.).

Honestly, the online service is super cheap so it doesn't bother me. It costs a lot to run servers and the fact Nintendo didn't charge until now is honestly shocking.

I don’t think servers are used. It’s a peer to peer connection, just like previous games. Are cloud based saves going to be offered? That would be new.

"I’m hoping its only focused on the multiplayer aspect of the game and not required to get the most out of the game (fruit, clothing, furniture, etc.)."
Nintendo is not shy about gutting features from their $60 games just because you don't have a subscription.

Mario Maker 2 requires an online connection to upload/download levels, not just for the "online multiplayer" aspect, which makes those who don't have a subscription miss out on a huge part of the game's appeal.

So, I'd say it's safe to assume that New Horizons will follow that same logic with any of its online services -- if the "Dream Suite" were to return in some form, for instance, I'd guess that it'd require an online membership.

"Are cloud based saves going to be offered?"
Not confirmed one way or another. Many games offer cloud saves, like Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, or Mario Kart 8. However, some games don't allow cloud saves:

1. Splatoon 2 doesn't allow it, since your online rank data is stored in your save file, rather than on their matchmaking servers, and they don't want people to lose a few rounds and then revert back to an older save.

2. Pokemon Sword/Shield don't allow it, since they don't want you to trade a Pokemon to a friend, and then revert to an old save so you've essentially duplicated it.

Given these reasons, I'd say it's highly likely that Nintendo will just block cloud saves for New Horizons, too.

I agree that Nintendo will put somethings behind a paywall. They want to make money and bring in new subscribers. I’m hoping it doesn’t cripple the game though.

Two of the fun things on ACC are the giveaways and trades. I guess those activities will become limited in the NH game world.

There’s a lot of monthly subscription services out there today and it all adds up. Even though Nintendo Online is relatively cheap I can’t justify the cost since there isn’t much return for the money. Maybe as their system matures things will improve. Hopefully they’ll figure out a way to make it more appealing without limiting the functionality within their games.

Weren't server issues the reason that Nintendo had to discontinue WiFi for NDS and Wii games?

Allie_435 - I get plenty out of it myself as I play online a lot, and I particularly enjoy things like Tetris 99 and the retro game collections that are included, but as cmh says, Nintendo aren't using dedicated servers for most purposes (though the ones that are used don't pay for themselves, of course ), and multi-player is done using the same peer-to-peer setup as on the 3DS and Wii U.

cmh, GavinGoneGlobal - It was confirmed in an interview back in June that Animal Crossing: New Horizons won't support Nintendo Switch Online's Cloud Saves feature, as with Splatoon 2, Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu! & Let's Go, Eevee!, and Pokemon Sword & Shield, so as to prevent save-file manipulation.

707penguin - Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection used a third-party service for matchmaking that was provided by GameSpy, which itself was shut down when that company was bought out by another, leading to the DS and Wii online services going away with it. Nintendo used their own infrastructure after that.

The $20 a year is what will get me to pay.  Just incase.  Working 3rd shift in retail, being introverted lends me to not really want to go into others sandbox or let others in mine.    But if that $20 gets me free NES & SNES games to fiddle with & the off chance to visit others islands, I'll give it a whirl.

Just going to say that peer-to-peer isn't the only aspect: Matchmaking is a big part of online too, which needs servers. At least we have 2 players on the same console finally with ACNH.

There hasn't been any indication that we'll get a system like Club Tortimer (matchmaking) just yet. In fact, I'm a little doubtful that the off-screen island will return at all, as it seems our mainland town is being referred to as "the island" (implying there will only be one, single island; our town).

The only reason why I wouldn't rule out the off-screen island just yet is the fact the latest trailer showed a fairly large dock that I suppose we could construct for our town. Unless it's used as a diving/fishing location, I could see a boat being fit there.

"Will NH have match making? I thought it was friends list based."
Even if it's only based on the friend list, there still needs to be a central server somewhere to tell each of the two Switches where the other one is. This is how all Nintendo online games have always worked - the only difference with the DS/Wii was that they outsourced the central server(s) to a separate company.

The only alternative would be for save data and some portion of the game logic to be entirely on Nintendo's servers, like an MMO. That would provide much more stable multiplayer and, coincidentally, make cheating much harder, but it would also require you to be connected to the internet the whole time you were playing the game. I think that would be even less popular.

It's certainly irritating that Nintendo are now charging separately for something that used to be factored into the cost of the game, but the retro game library is large enough now that I'm somewhat mollified - if it wasn't there, I'd probably be spending half that amount on the Virtual Console anyway. Though yeah, I'd probably feel differently if I were also paying for a lot of other subscription services (Netflix etc.).

"the latest trailer showed a fairly large dock that I suppose we could construct for our town. Unless it's used as a diving/fishing location, I could see a boat being fit there."
Couldn't that just be for visiting other people's islands? Like the train station in AC:NL.

I assumed the dock was for that very reason, visiting others. A dock instead of a train station.

DrewAC - Since we're the ones on the island now, maybe we could go to visit other facilities on the mainland, instead?

GoldenCelebi - I'd be spending way more than £18 per year on Virtual Console stuff, myself! And with there being 68 titles in NSO's retro offering right now (48 NES, 20 SNES - or, on December 12th, 74 games, with 50 being NES and 24 being SNES), well, yikes! It's the only subscription service that I use, though.

GoldenCelebi It looks like the plane will be used to visit other people's towns, replacing the train station that was used in New Leaf. I don't think they would design a whole permanent building exterior/interior for only the introduction of the game, so I can definitely see that being the case.

If you watch the second trailer, it briefly shows an additional dock (aside from the one on the southern beach of the town) which extends out the right shore. There may be room for a boat there, possibly one to take us to an off-screen island.

PennyGwin - That could be the case too! Something like City Folk, although it may be annoying if we have to go through a big transition to get to things like shops every time. I personally believe we'll be designing Main Street (or something similar to it) north of the town. Or maybe they'll go for the traditional approach and have us place buildings wherever we want, all over town.

I can only imagine how much wood, stone, etc. they'll have us use if they intend on incorporating the craft system into those main buildings.

I don't like that it'll cost money, but it's cheap enough that I'll do it.

Also, I'm wondering if we'll be able to use the app to chat with each other? That'd be convenient, especially since with 8 players things might get hectic... although idk maybe voice chat would make this worse.

Nintendo Switch is $300, Average Switch Games Are $60. So You Spend Almost $400 On Their Games But They Still Charge You To Use Wi-Fi On The Games. They're Getting Money Hungry & Taking Advantage Of Our Love For Their Online Games.

I really doubt it is that expensive to run whatever servers the game might need. I think it's more about making profit that they don't make elsewhere. I can't imagine they're making much profit if any on Switch consoles. The $20 a year helps them make profit from nearly every Switch owner, even if they don't buy a single first party Nintendo game.

The subscription model is becoming more popular everywhere. I guess Nintendo figures that if Xbox and Playstation players pay $50 a year, their players will pay $20 a year. I'd prefer a cheaper game to make up for that but it's better than what some companies are doing. 2K basketball requires you to always be connected to the server to play most modes and disconnects the servers after a few years so the game itself is almost a subscription. At least with AC:NH we know the game will work forever and multiplayer should last longer than the DS and Wii if it is being supported by paid subscriptions.

I just looked up how much money Nintendo had made from the Nintendo Switch so far:

"According to Gamespot, new estimates from research firm Superdata Research has revealed that Nintendo moved a total of 2.4 million units globally throughout the month of March. This would mean that they've made an estimated $720 million from the Switch, so far."

That's a lot of dough

Well, that's how much they made in revenue. I doubt they're making much profit off of the hardware itself.

Also, it sounds like that data is from Spring 2017.

It might be cheaper but you get a lot more from Xbox and Playstation. I do not see how the connectivity is any different between New Leaf and New Horizons. If the backend tech is the same I don’t see why we have to pay for NH when we didn’t pay a dime for NL online.

It especially seems cheap considering that Nintendo has got a fun online community with MiiVerse.
And the real-time online communication using the console's built-in microphone and camera.
