This is really the only thing that keeps bugging me, I wish they didn't cut (pun intended) chopping down trees. I'll also miss the rare designs you could find on tree stumps in ACNL.

I've been assuming that you can still chop down trees, even though we did see a character hit a tree with a flimsy axe three times without felling it. Maybe the flimsy axes takes more chops, or perhaps you need a stronger axe to chop down a tree at all.

I do agree that the act of digging up the tree looks out of place, but that might change once we get used to it. It's not like there haven't been other cartoonish elements in the series.

I definitely think it looks weird, but it's still a feature I'm looking forward to. I hope it'll fix the issue of dead spots forming where trees won't grow because there are too many other things nearby. I also assume we can probably put the trees away in storage, which will be useful for landscaping with non-fruit trees.

at 1:05 in the first trailer, you see a tree stump. while it's possible that this could be a furniture item, I highly doubt it, since we see a tree stump chair at 0:44. I agree that it's likely that trees can only be chopped down with higher quality axes.

Thanks Angie, I didn't notice the stump *sigh of releaf*. I still wish that digging up trees would be locked behind the gold shovel, but I guess I can always just avoid the feature all together. It'll always be in the back of my head though

Yeah, it would be nice for the golden shovel to actually have a useful purpose for once. In City Folk, the silver shovel was better than the golden one (which I suppose is fitting since it's also harder to obtain).

Yeah I'm sure chopping down trees is still something we can do haha! In every promotional clip we've seen, they've only been hitting them with the flimsy axe. I... really doubt a little wooden axe would be able to chop down a whole tree (... right? ). I imagine it's done this way so that you don't accidentally chop down a tree when all you need is some wood for crafting something. With a non-flimsy axe it's likely that it'll function the way we're used to. If they removed the feature entirely then it's certainly a strange choice to keep the axe tool in the game, being that the whole purpose of an axe is to chop down things! Plus there are certain bugs that can only be caught when there's a tree stump around (violin and longhorn beetles)

In my case, I'm assuming that the ability to chop down trees is in the game until Nintendo says otherwise!

It's interesting that shaking trees and hitting them with an axe (fewer than three times) don't do the same thing anymore - they always used to. I also wonder if bells and furniture can still be found in trees. And what about bees? So many questions!

Grabbing an entire tree did seem out of place at first but it being a quality of life change makes sense. Instead of chopping all of my trees down and waiting a few days for the new ones to regrow, I can just move my trees intact wherever I'd like.

Putting this kind of action behind a energy system is also a cool inclusion, giving purpose to fruits that you eat. I guess all in all, I personally like it. Although it looks goofy, so is picking up entire dressers and couches that turn into leaves and fit in your pockets.

Moving trees, a thing which is done in real-life (admittedly usually with smaller ones), and which gives us the word "transplant", looks totally out of place in Animal Crossing. Meanwhile, stuffing your pockets and wardrobes to the brim with live whale sharks, storing them there indefinitely, and having them remain alive throughout, is perfectly normal.

Seriously, though, as everyone else has already said, I doubt that we're going to lose any core gameplay mechanics with New Horizons, and I haven't seen anything suggesting that we will.

Also, I have to agree with Jenguin - it's really cool to see fruit finally being given a purpose. It always bugged me a little bit that in previous games, you could eat it, but all that it did was waste money that you could've made from selling it. I'm surprised that it took this long for that to change!

"Thanks for the sarcasm, I didn't even read you comment because of your snooty personality. That said I hope they make villagers a little more aggressive again."
I'm terribly sorry, I actually wasn't being sarcastic, hence why I immediately followed my joke up with "Seriously, though" - I just found the notion of what is and isn't realistic in Animal Crossing to be lightheartedly humourous!

My sincerest apologies if my comment came across in the wrong way.

It's alright it just seemed a little condescending, I wasn't saying it looks out of place because of realism. The feature is just new to me and kinda looked out of place because I'm used to the older games. I know alot of people are happy with it. Sorry if I overreacted.

It's no problem at all.

I wonder if there will also be some sort of effect that we can get from the inevitable coffee, too, and if that would be similar to fruit allowing you to uproot trees? Temporary faster movement, like so many goofy cartoon/movie tropes, perhaps?

That would be cool! I hope they add a little bit of cooking, maybe we could make fruit salads or pies that would give us some cool abilities and raise your energy even higher. I also wish they would add a feature to invite your villagers over for a dinner party or something of the sort.

Weedle_ - Yes! Back when I first picked up the series, I always wondered why eating was there if it was pointless. It's nice to see that it finally has a purpose. I also really like toolbox123's cooking idea, as that would build upon what we've already seen in a practical way, and bring the game's newly-added crafting element into it, too.

Yes, that's why I specified "useful purpose." Money trees are, on average, a net loss. By planting 1000x bells, you have an x% chance of getting a money tree that, no matter how much you planted, will bear 90,000 bells, which means that your expected return is only 90% of your initial investment.
