Im playing mostly pure. When I was little I time travelled a lot, but have stopped doing that in the last few years. No giveaways for me. Im not opposed to trading even though I havent done it before - its been a part of the game since WW so why not?
Not sure about guides yet tbh, Ive used them extensively in the past but my playthrough of PG with no help (except for a face guide) has been beyond satisfying. Face guides arent an issue anymore, but if there is some way to choose your town layout Ill find one in a heartbeat. For bugs and fish Im trying to take a new approach. I might ignore what type of fish they are while looking at the times and shadow sizes, or vice versa, or more likely neither. But getting help with bait types isnt off the table.
Earlier today I thought of something cool; putting major paths on the acre edges. That would keep the town neat, speed up travel, help with getting perfect town status, and make catching fish and bugs a bit simpler too. I like to keep my town pure and classic, with scattered trees and buildings, but I love planning and making paths.
Also, Im not a fan of crafting at all. Ill probably just be using it for fishing bait and low-tier tools.

Honestly, I'd love to say I'm going to play super pure. If we are being honest though, I will most likely time travel at some point.

I want to try to recapture the magic of Animal Crossing for the GameCube so I plan on playing as purely as possible meaning no time travel, no internet guides, and no online trading (except with local friends). Back in 2002 I didn't have a home computer and didn't even know you could change the time/date on AC to time travel. I remember waking up every morning before school and doing my daily AC "chores" and just living a simpler life. That is what I hope to recapture with AC:NH.

I’ll time travel here and there but only a couple days and I always go back to the correct day. If I need fish or bugs from another season I’ll just find someone in that season.

As for trading, I’m huge on buying, selling, and trading here on ACC. I like landscaping and decorating and upgrading my houses and whatnot so I need things I won’t necessarily have, like specific furniture and clothes.

As for giveaways, the giveaway services won’t be up for NH right away, but when they are I probably will order. I did and still do for NL. I need stuff like hybrids and whole furniture sets because otherwise it will take forever and a day to finish my houses, and I have having things unfinished.

As for guides, of course I’m using guides. The questions in the beginning determine your face, and although this may not be the case for NH, if it is, then I can’t have some random ugly eyes I hate and I always have to look at hair/hair color guides. And I like to know what I have to do to unlock certain buildings and stuff like that. So yes to guides.

I'll be playing purely. It depends on your definition of pure, though. My definition is not taking bells from people, trading items from other players for bells, and taking villagers from other towns (Like ACNL).

I'll be playing purely, because I always have - I've never time-travelled and I don't have any interest in doing so, though I fully respect those who use it for research, as I'm sure that it can be helpful for that purpose.

I've used guides for faces and haircuts, as well as for how to get particular Public Works Projects, in the past, and I regard that sort of thing as little different to getting tips from other players, so if I need to look something up in a guide I'll happily do so.

As great as that would be, I'm not sure that it would be feasible unless they required an Internet connection to play the game, which I definitely don't think would be a good decision to make.

true. it's just something i've seen floating around for a bit. and what they're talking about may not even have anything to do with time travelling, but with the duplication of items. quick example i found

Very late to the party here, but I'll play.

I will time travel some.  I am against people doing massive jumps, but it is their game & it makes them happy, go for it.  I TT because I have worked 3rd shift Retail for the past 21 years. For example I have not had Thanksgiving off in that time.  And Franklin visits when I am asleep in RL.  So the next day I have always come home & did that event.  Or New Years Eve as another example.

For that reason I hope Nintendo does allow some TT.  I get they are making a game & would prefer people play a certain way.  But if you are going to allow for hemisphere changes (which is a good thing), why not allow folks to TT to whatever extent they want.  Add in something like the Red Turnips as a deterrent I think would be fine, but let people who have to work non-"normal" days & shifts or people who attend functions get to enjoy events too.

As for online trading or playing with others I probably won't do that with this version either.  Again working 3rd shift retail, my gaming time is when most folks are at work.  And while I have had many fun visits from people here or former co-workers, I just mainly want to enjoy the game myself.  That is where New Leaf & Pocket Camp did well I think.  Dream Suites allowed us to see others towns & Pocket Camp I can help out fellow players with watering, dig site, bugs on flowers or buying things at my own terms.  I don't have to sync my life up with another persons.

strahd9 - I really enjoyed the Dream Suite partly for that reason, partly for seeing friends' and random people's towns at any time, and partly to see the cleverly-crafted "story"/"experience" towns that some folks put together. With the added customisability that we now have, with New Horizons inheriting Happy Home Designer's approach to putting furniture outdoors, it would be a foolish move if they didn't bring it back!

I plan to play purely though I may possibly time travel to catch up events I miss due to real life.

Currently I haven't brought the online subscription thing so I can't play online with others.  I was going to buy that when AC:NH comes out but now I'm not so sure.  It might depend on how you communicate with others, I have moderate hearing loss and really struggled with the Wi speak when it came out.  I preferred it to start with when everyone was just typing.

What others have said about avoiding the Internet and guides etc does appeal to me so I think I'll give that a try once I start playing.

Though there is a separate Nintendo Switch Online mobile app that you sync with your Nintendo Account that supports voice-chat in supported games, I would imagine that the default way of communicating in ACNH will be typing, as the Switch doesn't have a built-in microphone.

Having actually thought about this now, I think I plan on playing pretty purely.

I recently picked up ACCF on the Wii again and decided to have a go at time-travelling, and it completely ruined the game for me. I got bored of it very quickly and didn't pick it up the day after I spent 5 hours time-travelling weeks ahead to get new fish/bugs etc.

I'm planning on just playing online with some people (if I can find some new friends!), doing a bit of fishing, bug-catching and landscaping and generally having a nice time.

I'm thinking that I won't really have enough time to actually manipulate the game in such a way, as now I have a full-time job, house to look after and real-life chores to do which I didn't have when I was 11 and playing AC games about 13 years ago.

I think half of the AC games is playing with other people online and helping each other, so I definitely plan on coordinating with other people. I shall see how much TT affects the game, but I'm not opposed to it too

Mainly purely.. I plan on some trading with a real.life friend every now and then like back in game cube days. I might time travel back a few hours if I missed something that day of it's a 1 time a year like a holiday of I'm too busy with family or with my kids. This is the first game that coming out(excluding pocket one since i didnt play that)that I will be taking care of kids ( 3 year old twins) so it might be bit difficult. Maybe one day when they are old enough il introduce them to.animal crossing. Or show them the game now and they can name all the animal species.

I won't time travel or use giveaways. I don't see anything wrong with exchanging items with friends, though. I don't accept large gifts like a throne or 99k money bags, but if someone picked up a piece of furniture I've been looking for, that's fine by me.

As for guides, I generally only use guides that don't affect game progress...like appearance guides (which won't be necessary in New Horizons). Although, I might eventually check a fish/bug guide when I'm down to just a few that I need, just to see when they're out. But that probably won't be for at least a year into the game.

I'm a frequent time traveller in my games but I've decided to play pure for this game. As for trading and giveaways I'll probably opt for trading with friends but I don't usually participate in giveaways. I assume I will need to use guides at some point as I have for all of the games. I'm excited to play the game without time travelling I feel like it will pay off and leave me satisfied in the end.

I definitely feel time traveling goes against the design of the game, and won't be doing it whatsoever. The game has so much more longevity if you play it how the developers intended, and it makes the experience far better.

As far as guides go, I might check some here and there (I loved the Prima guide of New Leaf). I'll just be trying not to rely on them so much, as it's far more fun to explore and find out things yourself when a game is new.

Everyone has their own definition of what playing "purely" means, though the OP did allude to what they consider pure by the questions they posed.

I never time-traveled in the GC or WW games.  I may have done a bit toward the end of my playing time in CF.  And by time-travel I mean setting the clock back to the day after I had previously played if there was an event I had missed.  I've never traveled forward past the current IRL date.

In NL, I time-traveled quite a bit, but only after about a year, when I stopped playing as much.  Due to the way NL worked in that villagers could plop their house down pretty much anywhere, I resorted to time-travelling to avoid villagers moving out.  So, if I hadn't played for more than a week, I'd set the system clock to the day after the last time I played, then play each day until I got the "moving ping."  Then, I'd tell them to stay and set the clock forward to the correct IRL time/date.  I never minded villagers moving in past games, as it was fun to meet the new animals - and really, there are only a handful of different personalities anyway, so one snooty is pretty much the same as all the others.  But, in NL, I only had probably 3 villagers move, as I hated having to re-do my town to accommodate where they placed their house.

Thus, in NH, I don't foresee time-traveling at all, until maybe a year or so after I've stopped playing regularly, in which case I might change the time to play an event that I just recently missed.

As for trading - that's actually part of the gameplay.  Trading with other players has been a thing since the original GC version (though it was clunky).  If players are talking about giveaways, then yes, I won't be using those until I've gotten to the end of my regular play, which is usually a couple years after the game has been out.  Even then, I've only ever used it with NL to get the region-exclusive items and then all the Amiibo items, since I had no interest in spending real money on collecting those figurines or cards - and whatever gizmo I needed to be able to use it on my "old" 3DS.

As for guides, sure, I use them and don't consider using them as playing impurely.  It can ruin the sense of discovery if not used in moderation, though.  Thus, I've only ever used them if I get stuck on something or just can't figure something out on my own.

At the end of the day, play this game how you want and however you enjoy it.  I think time travel will still be possible and that cloud saves are disabled only because it would allow an abuse of the feature that previous games did not (unless you hacked).
