so I realized after a while, the switch allows 8 profiles to be made on it. you can have 8 players living on your island. the switch saves to the console, not the cartridge. my guess is that every profile on a switch can make one player character, so everybody shares the one island. best case scenario is you can have 8 islands with 8 players on each for a total of 64 players, but that seems less likely to me.

if an AC themed switch comes out, I'm definitely getting it, but after that I can't see myself spending money on both another game and console, so looks like I might be sticking to two towns only this time.

I'm with you there on an AC themed switch, more than likely, since they've delayed it, and my hubs heard that Nintendo is moving switch production to south east asia, and there's the mini and pro rumors, I'm betting that the new switches will be announced some time this month, maybe next month, and they'll come out debuting with ACNH themed switches, both pro and mini... but that's just my thoughts anyways...

Yeah...I'm guessing it's only one town per console, like it has been since WW.

My hubbie and I are going to have to decide if we are going to buy another Switch or just both play in the same town.  I like sharing a town with him, though I can get rather bossy/particular about things, and he ends up feeling like he can't really do anything in the town without my permission.

But, being able to play together at the same time is appealing.  What's not appealing, though, is that we have to be in the same area all the time, and if the leader moves far enough away, the other one gets ported to where they are, which I think would be annoying as the non-leader.  Plus, it looked like that when the leader pulled out a tool, the non-leader was instantly stuck with the same tool in their hands, thus limiting the non-leader to doing whatever the leader wanted to do.  This is great when wanting to get specific tasks done quickly, but not for wanting to do separate things.

I think we'll probably end up getting another Switch (an ACNH themed one, most likely) so that we can each have a town and visit each other's towns.

Does not each Switch profile have its own game save data? If so, it would not be possible for each profile to be one character sharing the same island.

I could see this being either way. Games like BOTW and Odyssey have separate save files for each profile, so it could very easily be one island per profile, but you never know what Nintendo will do.

DukeCrossings I was thinking about that after posting this, and I sure hope that's how it works. I'm not sure how moving a nintendo profile to a new switch would work in that case.

HOPEFULLY this isn't the case, but I could see it working in such a way that the first character made is attached to the town and can't be deleted (like how in NL you can't delete your mayor), then every other player their save data is just for their individual character, and if you move your nintendo account to another switch, your character will have to move into whatever town is saved there (again, like how in NL, secondary characters could be moved to different towns that had room). but yeah, ideally they'll just let us avoid this headache and have 8 towns on a system.

WestonCarrie so far the only AC game that has been one per console was CF. GC you just needed more memory cards, and WW and NL you just needed to buy another copy of the game. I've seen people with 25+ towns and one 3DS

Hmm, I thought it would be one island per user. When they did multi-play, they said he had built a house on that island, and so they could play together. I was thinking that it was like previous entries, setting up another house for use in that world, but it could totally be linked to user, and because there's a house, there wasn't the rigmarole of selecting another user. Which brings up the question of what happens if that user gets deleted.

Anyway, there's some precedence. Take Portal Knights. Each user can create multiple universes and characters. There's a split-screen option where 2P selects which user will be playing. If 2P doesn't have their own character, then they get to create one then and there (and so a save file is also created for them), but if they do already have characters, they just have to select which to use. There are definitely more steps involved as opposed to the drop-in/out they showed in the Treehouse.

What might be a limiting factor is how large the save file will be. Each save file for Portal Knights is 784MB (well, 2 of them on my system are, there's a 3rd that's only over 500, but I don't remember anyone using that guest user for PK), but it's a Minecraft clone in which you can greatly modify your universes, which are quite large.

And don't forget that not all games have cloud saves (like Splatoon 2). It really would not surprise me if Nintendo decided to not allow cloud saves for NH.

On a side note, I expected they were going to do multi-play on one console had they made a Wii U version. One person on TV, one on the gamepad. That would have been so good, unlike this focus on one leader, but if you really can play 8 characters all on one console, it makes sense. I'm going to have to rewatch that Treehouse because I thought the 8 characters referred to local and online play...

Riesz my understanding is that it's 8 players for online play, 8 players can live on your island, but only 4 players can play at the same time on one console (which makes sense bc 8 players having to stay on screen at once is A Lot. 4 almost feels like it's pushing it).

I'm sure save space is an issue but I really wish they'd give us the option. I had multiple towns in AC:GC and loved having one main town to play purely and a second town to try things with that I didn't want to risk in my main town.

8 players on 1 island seems really cramped.

Although I did notice on the island map, there's an airplane. Idk if that's just to travel to other player's islands, or if we'll get to have like a chain of islands. Maybe you can't live on the smaller ones in the chain, but they can be like the island in the older games- just one island villager or shop or something.

Yes, agreed.

What's especially aggravating is that because save files are stored on the console, not on the cartridge, it won't be possible to buy a second copy of the game to get a second save file - you'd actually have to buy a second Switch, which is well out of my price range and I imagine most other people's too.

That's hugely disappointing. They seem to realize this game is a system seller. There are quite a few of us who have multiple 3DSes, but how many of us are getting extra Switches? I'm planning on getting a second, but that's it, unless they slash the price massively and offer a dockless set.

Also if you have multiple players in one household, chances are they're going to want their own island to tinker with.

Take the bad with the good, I guess, but this feels like a backhanded slap.

Eh, I don't think that this is anywhere close to universal. I shared a City Folk game with my siblings, and none of us ever had the desire to have our own town to ourselves. We already had that with Wild World.

Maybe if your siblings are the same age as you and/or fairly mature, but I imagine it would be awful for anyone with very young siblings or children who won't have any interest in keeping the island nicely landscaped. Certainly I wouldn't have been able to tolerate sharing a town with my brothers back in WW. Nowadays they've grown up and it would probably be fine, but sadly we don't live together any more.

I'm also getting nasty flashbacks to Minecraft. I set up a server for my brother and his friends when he was about 10. As I recall, it ended up a charred wasteland.

I wish I lived with someone who had any interest in Animal Crossing. It would be fun to build an island up with a loved one. Maybe I can try and get my boyfriend into it but he doesn't seem to have any interest. I guess I'll talk about it constantly to the point he wants to try it.

I've re-read the article and this is what it says about save files:

"Kyogoku told IGN you can make up to eight playable accounts on one Nintendo Switch and they will be able to live on the same island. You cannot have multiple islands, however."
Now I know it sounds like it says that each of the eight player profiles on a Switch console becomes a single character on the same AC:NH save file. But given that we've established there can be 8 people at once in a town via couch co-op or wireless communication, and that no other Switch game has ever had the same save file shared between multiple Switch profiles, I think there's a possibility that this is a clumsy translation, and that Kyogoku actually said that it's possible to have eight characters on the same save file, not meaning to imply anything about the number of save files per console. The translator has also said that she was "a little confused" about it and would have liked "clarification". At the very least I think it's ambiguous.

Perhaps this is just my wishful thinking, though.

Good point. I wouldn't expect it but we can still hope.

With how much customization there seems like there will be, it would make a ton of sense to allow multiple islands per console. In all previous games other than AC:NL you had very limited customization options outside of your house and AC:NL was on a handheld device so it was less likely that people would be sharing it.

Actually there are other switch games that share one game with multiple accounts. The one I can think of off the top of my head is Go Vacation. This was also a common thing on the Wii U with Amiibo Festival and Nintendo Land. I do not believe they will have any issues pulling it off as we've seen them do into before.

My only concern with 8 players 1 island is space. The island must be twice the size of NL for it to feel less crowded. However the E3 demo the island looked incredibly small for 8 players. When the person walked around on the map the distance and the map size compared to structures (no matter what the grids look like) felt/looked only slightly larger than NL. Which I couldn't imagine 8 player houses on that.

If it turns out to be possible, I will probably buy a second switch (maybe the mini?) so that I can have two islands. The whole reason for doing that is that I get a great deal of joy and satisfaction out of frequently starting a new town. When I do, I like to have another town where I can drop off my best stuff before destroying my old town, beginning anew, and then going to the other town to pick up my stuff. This is what I am doing in ACNL.

Ideally, all this travel between two Switches would be via local wireless like it is with my 3DSXL's. I suppose Nintendo will probably figure out a way to make me subscribe to their online stuff in order to travel to the other town on the other Switch, though. Ugh.

Anyway, I will wait and see if my overall plan is still possible in ACNH, like it was in ACNL, before buying my second Switch. If it isn't, I'll just stick with having only one Switch. I'll just play on one island. Then when I get tired of it, I'll restart and start from scratch on a new island.

I am a solitary player and don't play with other people. It's not that I don't like them, but I just prefer playing alone.
