Hi!

So Happy to finally discuss a new game

I thought it was VERY COOL players that have only one console in the house can make account's and PLAY AT THE SAME TIME! I wanted this so bad when I played City Folk with my brother.  We shared a town and always wished we could play at the same time.

How did everyone react initially?  At first I was disappointed because I figured the game would have been in development by now for many years, and it would look super polished and have high quality textures at this point.  Clearly the game has not been in development for as many years as I thought, and the game still looks like it has a long way to go, and it will get better over time. I kept in mind when we first saw New Leaf, the graphics looked much different than the final product.  So Im optimistic about the graphics getting better.

Overall, Im happy we finally saw it!  I know there is a lot more to see eventually; I know the graphics/textures will improve as the game comes along.

I hope everyone else is excited!!!

my reaction was basically the same as yours I think. I really didn't like the plastic-y look of the graphics at first. after watching the trailer a bunch of times the look has grown on me a lot, but I do still hope that the environmental textures are going to get just a bit more love put into them.

also man being able to play at the same time would've saved a lot of fights with my sister when we played on gamecube being able to just trade who's leader every hour instead of having to quit playing altogether would've been great

the crafting super threw me off as well at the start, so much so that I wasn't able to process the rest of the trailer on the first watch bc I was trying to decide if I liked crafting or not. again this is a thing that ultimately I think is gonna be fun and a good addition, but man that intro completely took me out of the rest of the trailer

The crafting part gives me pause, but the rest of the game looks pretty good, I think. I'm also a bit worried about the fact that we're on an island instead of on the mainland, but we'll just have to see what happens!

Does this mean we won't see Kapp'n, because we don't need him?

I think the texture of the grass and environments will hopefully get better?  As far as the "plastic" appearance Im hoping this is due to the lighting not being rendered how it would in the final version?  I notice like the characters don't see to have like shadows/shade on them, they just look like one solid color.  Its mostly the grass, sand, and dunes that connect the grass to the rivers, or grass to the beach.  They just look like one solid color, and I would like to see them look more realistic/detailed.  Maybe the sky also could use more detail?

I don't know, the fact that so many people had the initial impression of the graphics looking plastic, over saturated, and not as realistic as new leaf, it definitely is a valid point.  I hope it looks better, and that Nintendo makes it look more realistic

BOTW / Smash also look "plastic" in a sense, so I'm not sure the art style will change that much over the coming months.

I'm very eager to see what's new. I'm glad that they aren't afraid to change the formula, by putting players on an island instead of another standard "foresty town". The fact that it still looks huge, and still has seasons, is also re-assuring -- they're not going to ruin much by making it an island, just the (loose) "plot" of the game will change, and instead of cliffs around the edges of the town, it'll just be more ocean.

^I wouldn't classify either of those games as looking "plastic". smash definitely has plastic-y elements, but in places where it makes sense. BOTW is not plastic-y at all. cartoony with simplified colours and shading for sure, but the world doesn't look like it's literally made of plastic. it's a deliberate style choice in that case.

what we're talking about is more the subtle way the light interacts with the environments that gives everything a very flat and less life-like feel, which is definitely something that can be changed with some tweaking within the next few months. from the footage so far it looks like it's ALMOST there, but just needs a little bit more. I don't think it's necessarily something that most people will notice or care about unless you take a before and after shot, put them next to each other and point them out. if you compare the first look we got at acnl compared to the final game, the difference is subtle, but everything looks just a bit less shiny and smooth in the final version.

I was happy to see it at last. The first thing I thought of when seeing it was The Sims Castaway, but I guess we aren't shipwrecked on the island. At first looking at the map that appeared during the Treehouse segment, I thought it was 7x6 acres, but on closer inspection it's 6x5. Still a large map, except... it sort of doesn't? With the airport being on the map, I suspect we might be developing islands as some kind of holiday resort, which would be an interesting take on the series.

I might be overly optimistic, but from the trailer, it looks like we might have a shot at selecting skin tone, which means POC like myself won't have to "tan" to get a character reflective of us.

I actually liked the graphics.  I agree that lighting and shading needs to be improved, and maybe that's what people mean when they say it looks plastic-y, but it's not like the graphics were actually "realistic" in the other games.  The trees don't really look like real trees, for example.

I was also a little put off by the crafting at first, since I thought "oh no, I don't want another Pocket Camp game."  As long as we will still have Gracie Grace or other stores with items we can purchase, then I'm fine with being able to craft some things.

At first, I was thinking "oh no...we don't get to earn our golden tools anymore."  But, after some thought, I realized that working toward upgrading our tools (if that is indeed what will happen) would be more interesting than e.g. buying so many saplings/flower seeds to earn the silver can or whatever.

Oh, another thing I noticed about the graphics was that the girl's hair moved while she walked!  It was in a pony tail, but it would move while she walked - rather than just being static.  And, while it was in the trailer, the one girl's dress moved in the wind!

Also, at the end of the trailer, we got to see the island looking more like a town, and seeing some of the house models and that you can basically create an outdoor patio area, I'm really getting excited.  Also, since we can create pathways (the trailer showed her using some kind of tool to create a path), I'm hoping that we won't have any grass wear.  Please oh please oh please NO GRASS WEAR!

Clothing also looked to be much better - hopefully they've gotten rid of some of the uglier base designs.

Nine months is a long time to wait!

ETA: Oh, a couple other things.  I'm hoping that the stores will still have rotating stock, with the items on display.  It was always fun to check all the stores everyday for new items.  However, I noticed that items that the Nooklings had for sale showed up in a menu, and it wasn't clear if those items would always be there, or if they would rotate.

Plus, I like that we can freely decorate the island and not have to have Public Works Projects that are either permanent or have to be torn down if we want to move or replace them.

I also hope that we can determine where a new residents house will be, or that we can move it if we want.  And that we can move or own houses, for that matter.

I'm liking what I see so far.  I am curious what an ultimate finished island will look like though.  We start from scratch with the materials, which is different.  Are we going to eventually have access to the furniture sets we're familiar with?  Or will we have brand new island designs?  Will we still become mayor and eventually bring in Isabelle?  So many questions!

The way tools appear to work now is definitely one of the things that concerns me. I had the same thought about golden tools as you did. I really liked the way that they worked prior to New Leaf, and was very disappointed that in New Leaf some of them are just there as prizes for buying lots of stuff (not to mention the bizarre decision to make the golden net and golden rod only attainable at the Bug-Off and Fishing Tourney, respectively). I really hope that that's changed back in New Horizons, and I don't think that those hopes are incompatible with the crafting system. Perhaps there were be several tiers of tools rather than just two or three, and while the first few can be built via crafting, golden (and perhaps silver) tools must be earned the old-fashioned way.

Same. I suspect that there still will be rotating stock, but I definitely liked the aesthetic of them being set up around the shop rather than just being set up in a dialogue menu.

I love crafting and material gathering, so that alone got my heart racing.

They implied you have a lot of control over villagers, so I wonder if you can actually have an empty island.

Graphically, it's good enough, seeing it's a special demo for E3. Obviously hope it'll be better when the game is released. Loved the shadows of the clouds slowly moving along the ground.

"The first thing I thought of when seeing it was The Sims Castaway"
Wasn't quite the first thing I thought of, but that crossed my mind as well! It made it even more appealing since that's the only Sims game I like, and I played the heck out of it on PSP.

I think we will get traditional shops with items on display to buy, but that will come later on in the game.  It has now been confirmed that choosing your skin tone and face is accessible from the start (yay).  I am not worried about the graphics/lighting, it will get better as they work on the game over the next few months

They said you will start with about two villagers and that you can't force them to move but they can choose to move out. I'm guessing they won't move until more move in but 2 is still a significantly lower minimum than we've ever seen before.

Here is the more info about how many villagers you start with, and the fact that you can't make them move out unless they want to and that they are also in debt to nook. It's from IGN.

Awesome update.  I hope the house signs come back from WW and CF.  So we can move around where houses are able to move in.  It sounds like thats kind of coming back but instead of having a sign, new villagers just ask where to go?  I still feel like having the signs would be easier than a villager always asking where to go.

I'm guessing they'll propose a spot and you can either say yes or if you don't like it, you can tell them where they should go. I think that's a good balance between completely choosing and them going where they want. That way there is some randomness but you have a say if they choose somewhere horrible.

To be honest, I'd prefer if we got house signs back, or if someone moves in, they just ask us where to put the house and we pick.  I always hated in New Leaf the randomness of villagers moving in.  I also hate how often villagers want to move out.  I wish there was a way to like set a few villagers as best friends so they never leave

So far I love everything about it. Being able to have 8 online players in your game is going to make things a lot more fun. And in-game chat too. No more typing or pecking at a keyboard. One of the best things about City Folk was being able to chat with my friends in my town when they were visiting. I like the idea of starting a whole town from scratch. Going to extend the game play. As for being on an island, I pretty much thought of my previous AC games as being stuck on an island for the most part. Haha. Well, at least a peninsula jutting into the ocean.

I am curious if we'll be able to see our friend's islands off in the distance from our own? Or will those other islands be places to visit and explore? Or both?

Good news, it seems like in this article that you get to confirm where the villagers settle in! Here’s the quote:
"However, Kyogoku said before they choose a spot for their home, they’ll check with you to see if it’s okay. If you don’t like where they settle down you can tell them you don’t want to build in that particular spot and move their house location to wherever you see fit. "
So maybe it’s just for the first 2 animals, but I have a feeling other ones will ask where they should live too.

Hmm, at least I'll be able to keep it random, although I hope that there's a way to automate it so that you don't have to individually approve each house. I'd feel a bit dictatorial having that sort of control.
