Alright so I know a drabble is really 100 words and this isn't but it's more a drabble than a one-shot so...yeah. I started this on the fourth anniversary of my town (because it's come a long way and I was having feelings ) and I dusted it off and finished it! It's just a little reflective piece
Isabelle looks up from her work, and she thinks.
Through the window of the town hall, she can see the setting sun and the sky, which has become a canvas of different shades of orange. The street lamps are coming on, illuminating the stone paths running throughout the town. She spies two residents having coffee on a bench and chatting about something animatedly. She can hear the buzz of insects outside, appropriate for a warm summer’s night.
This is a sight that Isabelle never gets tired of. Her town is tranquil and happy, and that’s what matters. She could never forget the day their mayor had stepped off the train, looking confused as anything. Isabelle had helped them, shown them the ropes, and made them feel welcome. And they had returned that kindness tenfold.
Four years later, their own little town is in far better shape than it has ever been before. The gardens are blooming, there are beautiful fountains and statues and new shops on Main Street. It’s an amazing transformation, and Isabelle is impossibly glad to have gotten a front row seat.
Sure, sometimes the mayor did things that Isabelle didn’t understand. They’d suddenly disappear, or decide to cut down half the trees in town, or some equally baffling thing. But at the end of the day, they always came back and they always came with a vision for the town. The mayor’s progress means a lot of paperwork for Isabelle, but she finds she doesn’t mind because it’s such a treat to watch her town come together like this to make something beautiful. She can hardly believe how fast it’s all gone.
Four years down, and Isabelle hopes for many, many more.
She smiles as she looks back down at her desk and picks up her pen.
