Prologue

I sighed, standing at the bus stop and glancing around. The bus was running five minutes late, and I was freezing. It had snowed heavily a few days before, forcing me to postpone my trip until the snowstorm passed. Now the roads were clear enough and the few vehicles that regularly came through this small town could get through. That included the bus, of course.

Wrapping my coat around me tighter, I looked up at the sky. It was clear, with a million tiny, twinkling stars doing their best to shine bright. The moon was almost directly overhead, and about three quarters full. I briefly thought of how much he loved sitting on the roof and looking through his telescope, naming off stars and planets with satisfaction. I shook of the memory and forced myself to stay focused. Leaving was for the best, and I sure as heck couldn't stay here after what had happened. It was too much even to think about it.

I was pulled out of my thoughts by the sound of the old bus rounding the bend. Kapp'n was in the driver's seat, as usual. I picked my small bag off the ground and smiled when the bus came to a stop and he opened the door.

"Well what ye think yer doin' goin' out this late at night, missy?" He said with a hearty grin.
"I'm headed to the city for some fun," I replied. I hated lying to him, but I didn't have much of a choice. If I told him the truth he might tell someone else.
"Well, as long as yer sure this is what ye really be wanting to do in this cold, har har!" With that reply he shut the door and I took my seat.

He was strangely quiet for the ride, which was unusual for Kapp'n, but tonight I didn't mind. I stared out of the dirty bus window and returned to my thoughts.

Forty five minutes later, we arrived in Northwood City. It wasn't the biggest city I'd ever been in, but it was definitely bigger than the town I'd just come from. I got off the bus, bidding goodbye to Kapp'n. I waited until he had driven away before I headed to the train station. I couldn't afford to take any risks of him seeing me. I purchased a ticket at the station and climbed the steps to the appropriate train platform.

"The train bound for Southern Shores will arrive shortly. Please watch your step.

I grinned, it was right on time. I watched as the train pulled into the station and came to a stop, then boarded after the remaining few passengers left the train.  I quickly found a seat near the front of the train, where few people liked to ride. Not that it mattered anyway, since there was no one else but me on the train. But still, better safe than sorry until I'm out of the area.

I settled into my seat watched as we pulled out of the station. It was one in the morning, and the city seemed deserted. I watched as it quickly became a blur as the train sped up, then turned to the inside of the train. It was a regular train car, with nothing out of place or particularly interesting. With nothing to do but wait, I yawned and began to drift off into a light sleep.

Chapter One - The Town Without a Mayor

"Sir, I can assure you I'm doing my best! I got a letter yesterday saying the new mayor had experienced a delay, but that they'll be arriving today! Please, don't be angry sir!" Isabelle said, while juggling a phone, folder full of paper, and a mug half full of coffee. There were dark circles under her eyes and her normally fluffy ponytail looked flat and slightly matted.

"I can assure you sir, I'll let you know as soon as the new mayor gets here! They're supposed to ride in on the first train today!" She said, her normally peppy tone sounds a bit distressed.
"Yes, yes sir! I'll be right on that! Goodbye sir!"

Isabelle placed her things on the counter and plopped onto the stool next to me. She let out a heavy sigh and sagged into the stool as if she hadn't had a break in two days.

"Is everything okay, Isabelle?" I said, running my hair through my dark brown hair and giving her a concerned look.
"I'm okay, Jay. Or at least I will be!" She laughed, though it was slightly forced. The smile dropped from her face. "To be honest, things have been pretty hectic since Mr. Tortimer just up and retired without warning anyone! I've been trying to fill in the role of mayor until someone else comes in, but I'm definitely not qualified to do everything the mayor is responsible. And now I understand why the mayor has an assistant! It's so much work!"
"I'm sure you'll make it through, Belle. You always do! And besides, isn't the new mayor supposed to arrive tomorrow?"
"Yes, they are. At least, that's what their letter said! I don't know anything about them though. I don't even know if they're a boy or girl, or if they have a house, or their name! I can only imagine how mad my boss will be if they don't show up tomorrow!"

I nodded quietly, not having much else to say. I motioned to Brewster and he refilled my cup, then cooed at Isabelle. She nodded wearily and he took her mug, dumping out the previous contents and rinsing it out. He refilled it with two sugar cubs, two dashes of cream, and piping hot coffee. After sliding it over to Isabelle he returned to his usual cafe duties and left us to ourselves.

Isabelle took a long drink of her coffee and then turned to me.
"Can you do me a favor, Jay?"
"Sure, what is it?" I replied.
"I need to get a welcome party together to greet the new mayor tomorrow morning at the train station. Do you think you could arrange it for me? Normally I would of course, but I'm running so ragged as it is and I still have to finish getting the town hall in order for the new mayor to start working."
"No problem, Belle. You know I'm always ready to help! And anyway, I can't bear seeing you like this. You need a break!"
"Oh, I'll be fine. This is just a bit of a rough patch, you know! It happens to everyone. Anyway, I really appreciate your help Jay. You don't realize how much this helps!" She said, giving me a grin.
"I can only imagine. I'll help, as long as you manage to fit in a shower and a long nap into your schedule! You gotta look nice for the new mayor, you know!" I said, giving her a wink. She laughed.
"I'll do my best!"

I smiled as I downed the rest of my black coffee and stood up, shrugging on my coat. I threw a couple of Bells down on the counter and nodded to Brewster, and then said goodbye to Isabelle.

It was colder outside than I expected it to be. It was so strange that it snowed here, considering we were on the southern coast. I watched as my breath made a small cloud in the air, then set off in search of a few townsfolk to make up our little welcome party.

It's strange that they wouldn't give specifics about the new mayor to anyone. I couldn't see why they would do that, considering Isabelle has to make all of the arrangements.

After wandering around town for a while I eventually found enough residents that weren't too busy to come to the welcome party. We got some party poppers and even a banner. The new mayor was all anyone seemed to be able to talk about, or care about. Residents were busy scurrying about their homes and gardens, sprucing everything up for the mayor's arrival. A group of townsfolk had even formed a small party to promote the "Clean Up the Town" initiative, and were busy pulling weeds, picking up garbage, and planting new flowers throughout the town. The whole town seemed to be in a buzz.

After running a few errands for a couple of busy residents, I returned to my own home. I stepped in the door and flicked on the light, relaxing as I entered the privacy of my own home. It had been a long and busy day, and I was ready for bed. I set my alarm before crawling into bed and drifting off to sleep, sighing peacefully.

If only I could have known what was to come.

Chapter Two - I Didn't Sign Up for This!

It was nearly seven in the morning, and I had just made my final train transfer. In a couple minutes I would arrive in Pearl Cove, ready to start my new life. I pulled small mirror from bag and looked, running a few fingers through my long, brown hair. I sighed to myself. I wasn't looking my best, but I suppose that's to be expected after travelling for so long.

The train is now arriving in Pearl Cove. Please watch your step!

I took a deep breath and put a smile on my face. This is it. This is where I'd start my new life, in a new town. Turning over a new leaf, if you will.

The doors opened and I stepped onto the train platform, looking around. It was chilly here, a lot colder than I expected for being in a town on the southern coast. The train station was plain, nothing too fancy. I passed through the ticket booth and out into the town.

"WELCOME TO PEARL COVE!"

The shouting startled me, and I nearly fell backwards, bumping into someone behind me. I looked up, then quickly blushed and moved away from him.

"Welcome to Pearl Cove. My name's Jay." He said, smiling warmly. He was tall, at least a foot taller than I was, with dark brown hair, chocolate eyes, and freckles across his nose.
"Um, thank you." I said, still a bit startled.
"Hey there! Sorry for startling you miss, we were just so excited for your arrival we couldn't contain it! My name is Isabelle, and I'll be your secretary and assistant to you here in Pearl Cove!"
"Secretary? Why do I need a secretary?' I said, confused. Isabelle laughed.
"Oh mayor, don't be silly! You need a secretary to take care of all the little things, so you can focus on your important mayoral duties!"
"Mayor? I think you must be confu-"
"These are some of our residents here in Pearl Cove! This is Marshall," she said, introducing a white squirrel who gave me a sly smile. "And this is Kiki," Isabelle said, introducing a black cat who gave me a smile and a quick meow. "And finally, this is Ruby!" She said, pointing at white rabbit. Ruby waved at me, giving me a cheeky grin.
"These aren't all of our residents, of course! Many of them are busy preparing the town and their houses for your arrival. Now, how about we head to the town hall first? You'll need to get settled in as a new resident before you're able to start working at all!"
"Really, I think you must have the wrong per-"
"Off we go, this way!" Isabelle said, pulling me by the sleeve. Before I knew it we were away from the residents and winding our way down a small path.

"Isabella-"
"It's Isabelle! It's okay though, I get Isabella a lot though. So no hard feelings!" She said cheerily, cutting me off.
"Er, right, Isabelle. Listen, I think you've got me mixed up for someone else! I'm definitely not the new mayor!" I said. She giggled at my response and glanced over her shoulder.
"Oh, don't be silly!" She said, giving me a grin. "You sure do like to joke around, don't ya? Oh, I don't even think I got your name back there! My boss never gave me the specifics of your name or age or anything, and you never specified in your letters either." She said.
"It's Melody," I said hesitantly, "but you've really got me mixed up with someone else!" I said, doing my best to try and persuade her into realizing I wasn't the mayor that was supposed to be here today.
"Melody, what a pretty name! Well anyway, you can't get cold feet now! You're already here!" She giggled. "And here WE are! Welcome to the town hall, Mayor Melody!" She said, swinging the door open.

We stepped inside and I wiped my boots on the small welcome mat, doing my best to get the snow off. I looked around. It was a quaint little office, with a large desk and chair in the back of the room, and some shelves behind that. In the center of the room was a large counter, covered with files, a computer, and a little bell which people could ring for service. There were a few potted plants and chairs in the room, and a large picture of a rather old looking tortoise on the back wall. Isabelle caught me looking at it.

"Oh, that's Mr. Tortimer! He was our previous mayor. He suddenly decided one day that he was ready to retire, and took off to a southern resort island! He shows up for a visit every now and then, but he sure left this place in a frenzy. After all, a town can't run without a mayor!" She said, stepping behind the counter and shuffling some papers.

"Now then, let's you get you all settled in as a resident! First things first, you'll need a town pass card! This is the card that will prove your citizenship of Pearl Cove, and will also let you travel to the neighboring towns for free! I'll have to ask you a few questions in order to fill out the form, okay?"
"Okay," I replied. "How long do you think this will take?"
"Oh, not too long at all Melody! Now then, your name is Melody, correct?" She asked with a giggle.
"Of course," I said, smiling at her.
"Great, and how old are you?"
"Nineteen."
"And do you have a house or living arrangement here in Pearl Cove?"
"Well, no actually. Coming here was a spur of the moment kind of thing, and I didn't really have time to figure out where I was staying..." I trailed off.
"No worries! That's no problem at all. You can go to Nook's Homes on Main Street right here in town and arrange for your own private residence to be built! You'll have to sort that out before I can finish your file for you town pass card, though." She said, giving me a sympathetic smile.
"Oh, okay. And you said Nook's Homes was on Main Street?" I asked.
"Yes, it sure is! Oh, and before I get, here's a little welcome gift the residents and I put together for you! We hope it will help you get better acquainted with the town!" She said, handing me a small box.

Inside was a map, a small basket of oranges, some tulip seeds, and a shovel. I thanked her and took out the map, then headed to Main Street.

An hour and a half later, I had property staked out and the plans for a small house on the most southern cliff of town were underway. I couldn't wait until the house was finished, I'd always wanted a house near the ocean. And mine was going to face out over the water, where I could see and here the ocean each and every day! I returned to town hall with a wide grin on my face.

"So, did Nook help get your property all set up?" Isabelle asked.
"He sure did! I'll have to stay in a small tent until the house is finished, but at least I have my own place here in town!" I said excitedly.
"That's great! Now, you have a residence here in Pearl Cove, and that was the last item needed for you town pass card!" She said, printing something out a small machine behind the counter and handing it to me.
"There's your town pass card! You'll be able to use it to travel between the southern coastal towns for free, and it works as your I.D. card, and an achievement tracker! Lots of important information can be found on it, so be sure and give it a good look later! Now, you'll probably want a picture for it. There's a photo booth on Main Street you can use. I'd suggest checking it out, it's tons of fun!"
"Thank you, Isabelle." I said, smiling at her.
"No problem! Well, I think it's best if you take the rest of the day to relax, get to know the residents, and settle into your new town, so I'll let you go now! We can figure out the details of your mayorship tomorrow. For now, I'll be here if you have any questions or concerns!"

I decided to leave the mayor argument until tomorrow, and just enjoy the rest of the day. I left the town hall and headed into the town, excited to explore my new home.

This is so cute!  I'm tryin to find out who this boy on the rooftop from the prologue is... " It was clear, with a million tiny, twinkling stars doing their best to shine bright." This line is really descriptive of the mood,  and giving the stars personality is I was wondering os Jay was the bird villager,  but this boy with chocolate eyes is mysterious. Chocolate is such a unique choice!  So sensual!  Cute story!!
