Hi! I just bought a copy of City Folk preowned from Gamestop a couple days ago. I've been enjoying playing it but I've noticed that the dialogue of the villagers is insanely repetitive. I'll talk to them 20 times, and I will get no options to choose from. They will just talk, and then I'll start the dialogue and talk to them again, and they will repeat the same statement about 10 times until I give up. I have played 3 days in a row and have never once been given an option to respond to them, ask how they're doing, or even say "Never mind." I'm thinking maybe it's because I just started, but it's starting to seem really strange. I watched a Let's Play video of the game and the villager asked the player a question, and the player was able to respond, which has not happened to me yet.
I've played Wild World and New Leaf and obviously in both games the villagers follow the same dialogue pattern- opening greeting, then you respond to them, then they talk again. Is this not an option in City Folk? Do the animals just talk at you and you can't respond, or is my game glitched?
I just did a little experiment as well. I talked to Becky 10 times. The first time, she said she was sleepy. The second time, she talked about when she was younger. The third time was a continuation of her previous dialogue. The next 7 times, she repeated exactly what she said the third time.
In City Folk, they tried to make the villagers "smarter" by making them remember your conversation. So, when you speak to a villager, they'll either ask you a favor, ask you a generic question, or make generic chit-chat, then the conversation eventually ends.
When you talk to them again, they'll just say something that's a reference to their first conversation. So the first one might be:
"Hey, did you know that Halloween is coming up? [explanation about halloween, talking about candy, etc.]"
Then you talk to them again:
"By the way, I hope you dress up!"
It's not a glitch, it's just how the game works. It certainly makes conversing with them more boring!
Yeah, once they start on a topic, they don't like changing the subject. just walk around town for a while and do some other things, then come back to them. It's a pain when you're trying to talk someone out of moving.
It's been a while since I've played, but if I remember correctly you can talk to other villagers, and by the time they're tired of talking to you the first one will be ready to talk again. I don't think I've ever had more than a few neighbors stuck in that mode at a time.
I remember playing ACCF and made a trade with Truffles. Awhile later she approached me and wanted to trade again Guess what for? The item we had traded before! Awhile after that she came up to me again and wanted to trade, you guessed it, the same two items yet again! So, yeah they do remember, but this was extraordinary!
I actually liked the memory part of our conversations. Yes, sometimes they were repetitive, but sometimes they were quite interesting.
