This isn't an AC-related story, I wrote it for school- but I do like it, so here it is!
The Treasure “You can do it, Cassie-oh!” Laura gasped.
Many girls would’ve cried from a fall like that, but not Cassie. She always picked herself up when she fell down. Cassidy Faith Lane was a beautiful, intelligent, kindhearted girl, although heavily dependent on others. This was to be expected, though – she was only one year old!
Cassie gave a giggle and hoisted herself back to her feet. She had learned to walk the day before, and she was now “practicing.” “This girl’s going to be an Olympic runner if she keeps this up,” her father, John, chuckled. “Aren’t you?” he cooed, tickling her fat little tummy. She was a beautiful baby, truly, and she made Laura and John very happy.
She had been born only two years after their previous baby, Joey, so Laura and John were pretty tired. In spite of this, they were really magnificent parents. They always spent time with their children, even after a hard and long day. Both of their children brought them immense joy.
Cassidy was, overall, a supremely happy baby. She never cried, except when she was hungry. Then, everyone needed to look out, because a storm was going to brew if she didn’t get that bottle right now. This was one of those times. Cassie puckered up her lips and the top one began to twitch. “Eh…uh!” she began to wail.
“Uh-oh, somebody’s hungry!” Laura commented as John set the baby down. Both went into the kitchen to get her bottle, but not before Laura had safely placed Cassidy in her playpen. “Don’t want you running off with those little legs of yours!” Laura planted a kiss on her daughter’s head.
Now Cassidy was alone. She didn’t like to be alone, especially when she was hungry. However, every now and then, she realized it was necessary for her to be alone, because if her parents were always around, no one would be waiting on her hand and foot. Her mother walked into the room, carrying Cassie’s most prized possession – that pink bottle, full of milk. Cassie’s eyes widened until they were the size of quarters. “Oh!” her mother cried. She hastily placed the bottle on a nearby table as she dashed to clean up the mess that Cassie’s three-year-old brother had made. “How many times have I told you not to leave the milk where the babies can reach it?” she groaned at her husband. Cassidy was now alone again.
The baby looked longingly at the pearly pink bottle. She licked her lips as her tears dried. She really, really wanted that bottle. She was going to get that bottle, and she was going to get it all by herself if she had to. Should she make the journey? Indeed, she should. Cassie hoisted one chubby leg over the side of the playpen, placing it on the end table nearby, and then hoisted the other leg. She was impressed with herself, and paused for a moment to plop her diapered tail on the table and clap giddily. She giggled with glee, but then realized her journey had not yet ended. Thus, she crawled onto the couch beside her and, letting herself down, gently placed each of her ten tiny toes on the floor. Step, step, step, boom! Step, step, boom! She still hadn’t perfected the art of walking yet. Nevertheless, she carried on.
She drew nearer to the bottle she longed to acquire. Cassidy was so close! She could almost taste the soft, pure milk flowing into her mouth. But then, her father scooped her up from under the arms. No! Cassidy thought, although since she didn’t know English yet, it was really just a bunch of confused and distraught squiggles in her mind. “How did you get out of there?” John laughed. He set Cassidy, now forlorn, into her playpen. “Laura, you’ll never believe…” his voice was cut off to his daughter’s ears when he entered the kitchen.
Cassidy’s dreams were dashed. In one swift moment, her hard work had been crumpled up into itty-bitty pieces. She almost cried again, but then she realized that tears would change nothing. There was only one answer – she had to break out of her baby prison again and go for the bottle. She was going to do it! So, once again, she lifted her fat baby legs out of her large baby prison, and in a moment, she was back where she had been when her father intercepted her.
It was then that she realized an evil creature was afoot. Nay, she thought, I have no ability to face this wretched being! But, once again, since she had not learned English, it was just a bunch of steaming, panicked squiggles in her mind. The creature drew nearer, and Cassie was filled with terror. The beast was much larger than Cassidy. This threatening-looking being was black and fuzzy. It had four legs, but no hands, and it had a wet, black nose. It began to growl. Rrrrr. Rrrrr. Then, it did something that surprised Cassie – it placed its rough tongue on her face and began to lick her! At first, she was terrified, thinking, It’s going to eat me! in frightened squiggles. Then she realized this creature was harmless and was simply trying to convey its affection for her. She patted the beast roughly, but it didn’t seem to mind. Cassie giggled and the creature made a barking noise. She jumped, then giggled again. Cassie gasped. She had just had a revelation. She could ride this large steed all the way to her bottle, if it would permit her. She had to try. So, Cassie crawled back up the couch by way of books and toys strewn about the floor, and giggled to get the animal’s attention.
It worked. The beast trotted over to Cassidy happily, and Cassie was exuberant. She placed each of her fat legs on either side of the animal’s shiny back and held onto it around the neck. The creature seemed to understand her desire, because it dashed to the table that she longed to reach. However, rather than letting her off there like a good chauffer, he simply ran into the table, knocking her precious bottle into the floor! Cassie, unharmed, gasped. Was her bottle okay? She attempted to squish the creature down by its head so she could get off, and the creature obeyed by kneeling to the floor. Cassidy had no time for falling now. She hurried off to the place her bottle had landed, feeling distraught and hopeful at the same time. Were her dreams dashed once again?
Nay, there was no dream-dashing at this time! Her heart was filled with joy. Cassidy gripped her bottle in her grubby fingers and began to suck on it vigorously. Bliss. She waddled back to the mass of toys and books and made her way to the couch. Then, she plopped herself down in the corner of it and became enchanted by the showing on the magical picture box. It was about a large, purple dinosaur, who seemed to either love kids or want to murder them. Cassie herself was not sure, but wanted desperately to find out. This was the life!
Her parents hurried back into the room, and Laura grabbed the air where Cassie’s bottle had been. When she found nothing, she looked down at the table. Gone! “Now, where did that bottle go?” she found herself asking. Then she looked towards the playpen. Cassidy, too, was gone! Panic filled Laura. She hadn’t yet thought to look at the couch, where Cassidy was still sucking on her bottle happily. She ran towards her phone, ready to call 911 if need be, but her phone was on the arm of the sofa. In grabbing her phone, she noticed her little cherub sucking on her bottle. Laura’s jaw dropped. “How did you…?”
Cassie just smiled.
