There's actually a limit to the number of items you can hold and I hit it yesterday when an item was finished crafting and I tried to claim it. The message was:
"Sorry, you can't hold any more items right now. You'll need to make room."
I'd been saving up items bought on the Market Place for any possible future scenarios and some items I had crafted loads of but hardly used them. Now I had to sell off black phones, tree stumps, boston bags and whatnot to make space.
Maybe it was a bit naive to think that the space to hold items would be limitless.
I don't know what the limit is because it's a bit difficult to count your items. I also don't know whether clothing counts (I guess so?).
I also found out there is a limit on how many things you can have in your campsite. I had an awesome layout that made it look like on one side a food eating contest and on the other side was the judge's booth/wall of fame of past winners (which was the pictures I've collected) and a waiting room for the next contestants.
I tried to add another "wall of fame" picture and it said there was no room. D:
That's good to know! I only craft one of something (except holiday/event items) and I've only bought one of everything at the market place to complete my catalog. I also only have one of each clothing piece and have sold the few duplicates I got from animals that were wearing shirts you can buy in the market place. So, I may still have a bit of room, but it's good to know so I don't hoard too much of the event stuff.
I've hit the campsite limit more than once, so yeah...many good ideas that don't quite end up complete.
Yeah. I feel your pain guys. I love to display animal photos but I had to scrap the idea because there wasn’t any room (according to them at least). I was bummed. I hope people might have complained about it so there’s a chance Nintendo might ‘fix’ this issue.

Today I sent Gulliver on his way with ten shirts that I had multiples of. I needed to make space because I couldn't even craft 10 items to make for him, because after 6 of them I had to offload those because I got the dreaded "out of space" message again. So I started making turkeys because preserves is all I'm getting nowadays (Rowan), and after having made six, I was told that I needed to make space!
Conclusion: clothing either doesn't count towards the maximum number of items you can hold, or clothing has its own maximum. Sjeesh, so now I have to get rid of actual furniture items? I'll try to manage until they've increased the inventory size that was promised in a recent announcement, hopefully that comes with the next update or there will be no more new items for me.
Maybe that is why Gulliver was brought in--so that players would have to start thinking of getting rid of some of their collections to that room could be made for new items coming in. So far I have given him balloon furniture and a few low level items. The biggest level item I gave him was an extra Alice dress that I had accidentally made. I received some nice treats from that one.
