So my AC backgroun is AC:GC and AC:CF in GC there was a daily tree planting limit of 3 (maybe 5, but i think 3 was it.) and in AC:CF I didn't get too much into the farming/bell grind, i just made like Roleplay buildings like my personal favorite which was/is a bank, with this being such, I forget if there was an arbitrary tree limit in that game.

So, I come to AC:NL after so long of holding off, start planting trees, find a perfect orange on literally my first day, and my first day I also caught a bee and hit the money rock 7 times, I was happy (until I found out catching bees is EXTREMELY easy in NL, or maybe just all DS games.) and got to looking up perfect fruit, find out the monetary benefits etc etc, plant the first perfect orange by my house, (it has since been used up and leaving a dead tree there) so on so on, look up if there is an arbitrary tree limit for planting daily, it supposedly is not a thing.

So I plant massive farms, and I know the obvious things, keep a circle around the trees, no planting next to rivers or cliffs, or walls, buildings, etc.

Well, I was just planting my 3 perfect orange grove today/tonight and .. lo and behold, fast forward 3 days as I ran out perfect oranges and I don't see a need to wait 3 in-game days for stuff in-game imo, so, sped up time, and random trees died.

There are... 12 trees dead/didn't grow in this 3 grove. 1st grove didn't have any stupid-dead trees, 2nd grove only had 4 dead trees, remedied that by putting a nice little bench in between the living trees and make it a cozy area with a clock tower even.

With 12 dead saplings that should have grown otherwise, it would be too costly to just find random projects to fill the gaps, not too mention too much time/patience with isabella not doing 2 tasks at one time, so than, while there seems to be not tree daily plant limit, is there a tree overall-limit for nintendo handheld AC games due to onboard-memory or something like a hardware limitation for the DS line?

im not aware of any tree limit, but I guess looking back I don't usually plant more then like 6 trees at a time,

it sounds like you might have found a dead patch, there are just places in acnl that trees wont grow which is seriously the most infuriating thing in the world when trying to  make an orange grove...

how trees grow or die in NL has a lot to do with what's around them. for example if you plant 9 trees like this:

TOTOT
OOOOO
TOTOT
OOOOO
TOTOT

the tree in the centre will die. BUT if you plant them one row at a time like this:

day 1:
TOTOT
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO

day 2:
TOTOT
OOOOO
TOTOT
OOOOO
OOOOO

day 3:
TOTOT
OOOOO
TOTOT
OOOOO
TOTOT

all nine trees should grow because there was never a point where a sapling was surrounded on all sides. another thing most people don't realize is that you need 2 spaces between the front of a building and a tree, so if you planted any in front of some houses, that could be why they died. also if any are touching bushes, rows of bushes and trees can only be 12 long. the 13th plant in the row will die.

then there are times when the game just goes "TOO DENSE" and kills off trees randomly. I like to have a LOT of trees in my towns and following the rules I listed usually works, but once in a while I just have to accept that I can't have as many trees as I want an replace it with something else.

Chiyoko my planting strategy is a normal row offset of 1 so like:

OTOTOTO
OOOOOO
TOTOTOT

(obviously won't have a T on far left/right if it touches a wall.)

I will try your way, and assuming if I read your 3day diagrams directly, you don't have offset (as in some are diagonal from eachother) so they are all straight rows right?

Prompted_animal thanks for the response, and I'd love to believe this just for sake of my sanity, is there any articles/forum threads you've seen verifying this? or is it like a myth/superstition that like in AC:GC you won't get a coelacanth if you recently time traveled?

edit: phrasing.

in my example they are planted in straight rows, but a similar principle applies to offset trees. basically if there is too much stuff in general around the tree, it won't grow. planting one row at a time will still help.

also true dead spots where nothing will ever grow in new leaf are a myth. if you can't get a tree to grow somewhere, there is a reason it won't grow. again, it's usually because there is just too much stuff nearby. that said, if you're unwilling or unable to alter the surrounding area for the sake of that one tree, it is effectively a dead spot.

In one of my spare towns there are 300 perfect fruit trees.  The town has 4 players and no PWP.

I've planted 150 to 180 trees in one night and most grew the next day.  Some didn't grow because of a dead spot or too many in one area.
