I know a lot of people were having trouble with this one, so how close did you get to completion? how many leaf tickets did you spend?
I'm super surprised that I managed to get all the butterfly items without even having to ask for help. I had a few lucky batches at the end. I didn't manage to get the red potted flowers or the regular crafting materials from the blue flowers, but I don't really care about those. I spent a few leaf tickets paying lloyd to speed up the growth of some flowers, but that was mostly just for cases when I had a few more seeds than spots to plant them and knew I wouldn't be back on for a while.

I surprisingly finished it as well. For the first 2-3 days I had a 0% catch rate; and that was with full fields. But then I tried a different catch method and it actually worked. As soon as I had some butterflies to give my friends, I was getting a lot back. My catch rate was still poor, but myself and several friends would do at least 4-6 back and forths.
I didn’t spend any leaf tickets. I flat out refused because I didn’t want to reward Nintendo for screwing with catch rate of the second half of the event.
But I don’t look down on those who did. If I really wanted the later items I too would have spent tickets to get those most likely. So without my friends and I trading, I would have only completed a couple of the second half events.
The first half I could have completed alone.
I got all the flower rewards including the pots of flowers, resources, and my favorite: essences!

i was one that struggled with this, i did get all the furniture on one of my games, but did not get all on my other, found it very frustrating as i was giving flies, but was not getting much in return, but i do want to thank the lovely person that helped me out on the last day
I want a new toy,....oi oi!
Unfortunately, I did spend too many Leaf tickets on this event. But, it was during the first half. I had such a poor catch rate and wasn't getting too many from friends at first. Since I knew that there was a second half, I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to complete all of it, so I spent about 120 Leaf tickets. But, as I later learned, it wasn't necessary during the first half, and I ended up finishing 2 days early. Ugh! Still kicking myself on that one, but the first day, I only got 5 butterflies! So, I spent some on the second day and by the third, I ended up getting everything, due to my friends, and got all the essences and the potted flowers and some of the other resources.
So, I was prepared for the second half, but not for the horrid catch rate. One time, when all 20 white dahlias bloomed, I got a grand total of 5 butterflies! Three white and two gold. Guess how many I caught - one white! Just, really? Ugh. I and my friends were really trying to help each other out, but when you don't catch very many, you don't have very many to share. There was one rare instance where I had three of each and got a 100% catch rate. But, other times, I'd have 8 or 9 of one and only catch one or two.
Since I wasted so many tickets during the first half, I was determined not to spend any in the second half. And, I didn't. I had decided that I'd only get the first two of the yellow rewards, since those were so rare and the third reward was a second mug and the fourth was Leaf tickets (which would have been wasteful to spend tickets just to get tickets). But, I managed to get the third yellow reward (the second mug) on the last day. I needed just one more and it took three rounds of flowers to catch that last yellow one for the 30 total I needed. I got all the rewards for the white ones. And, I got the potted flowers and essences.
So, all in all, I got all rewards except the final 40 Leaf tickets, but I spent an unnecessary 120 tickets.
I ended up finally getting all the items after 11pm last night, thanks to everyone who shared butterflies with me last night! I didn't technically complete it, since I didn't get the second rover mug or the 40 leaf tickets, but I got everything else, which I'm happy with.
I made the mistake of only placing a total of 6 dahlias in my garden for the first few days of the event, since I didn't want to harvest my rare hybrids, but I soon realized I would never complete it if I didn't utilize all the spots. I wish I had known that from the start lol.
I did spend over 100 leaf tickets and all my flower food just last night while scrambling to finish in time, and I spent real money in the game for the first time...not too happy about that, but again, kind of my fault since I didn't take the event too seriously at the beginning. All the other events up to this point have been so easy to collect all the items, I figured this one would be the same way, but I was DEAD WRONG.
Looking forward to completing the winter sports event now!
Better a live coward than a dead hero.
I wasn't able to finish it. Mostly because I don't have a lot of time to play during the week due to college. Or be forgetting the app is there. I got the items I wanted so I don't really mind not finishing it.

Similar to what julphi posted above, I managed to get everything except the second Rover mug and the 40 Leaf Tickets. I was down to needing one more gold butterfly to get the counter, and I was having horrible luck on the last day. Finally a friend gave me the last gold butterfly and I got the counter.
I did not use any leaf tickets or flower food, so I was extremely lucky to get as far as I did. What I also did on the last day was to trade a lot of my dahlias for various essences and flower food. This event was certainly helpful for my inventory at least!
Oh, but where can I get pizza-plant seeds? - Stitches, ACCF
Short version; I spent 10 leaf tickets to get the second mug because I wound up being *one* butterfly away and figured 'why not?' although in all likelihood, I'll probably never use them both since I'm not a big decorator.
Longer version; The first half seemed easy enough, even though it took me several days to realize what I should be doing with the butterflies. (Initially, I thought Rover was going to take them..) Once I started sharing/returning the red & topaz butterflies, I stumbled into an unarranged give & take with a few other players which helped out a lot with the second half. I think I finished the first half a day after the second half started?
As I discovered the dismal catch rate on the winter butterflies, I wound up playing more than usual as I tried to return every 4hr-ish hours to harvest the white dahlias and/or doing requests to get more white seeds. Following someone's advice from here, I started collecting them 3-4 at a time, instead of the whole field at once, which seemed to help slightly with the winters, even though I still got 0 a few times anyway. Oh, and I started leaving 3 grown white dahlias at all times, so there were at least a few flowers for people to place butterflies on while the rest of them were growing.
Side note; Gardening is so slow at the moment. Why isn't there a harvest option like the butterflies had; where you can select what you want to harvest and get your character to do it all in one go? I sure hope that's going to be an upcoming update to the garden. It's one thing to harvest/plant once or twice a day (or when you get around to it... ), but needing to do that soooo many times was adding a new level of tediousness to the game.
Overall, I didn't really like how often I had to pop into the game to get things done during the second half of the event, but the first half was fine/fun and seemed to mostly fit into my usual gameplay style.
Brrr, it's freezing! What possible explanation could account for why I'm so
darned cold?.. Oh... interesting. I'm made of snow. Well, then. That'll do.
