Recently restart my game to help deal with depression. Already caught a ton of fish, made 78k, paid my first downpayment and have villagers I love. However, I'm a tad worried about my layout. I don't hate it per se, but I was wondering what you guys thought of it. An image of it is right here
I don't particularly want to restart. The only thing genuinely annoying me is the placement of my first bridge, and of course soon I will be able to get some vertically facing bridges.
The question isn't whether other people think the map is OK but if you think the map is OK. Everyone has their own ideas on how a map should look, and how bridges and buildings are as well as other things.
Usually, I'll have a layout where the river runs like this:
The red area marked by R is the river, area W is the waterfall, area Z is the main land and the area B is the beach. Usually I'll have the bridges diagonally, but some people put one vertical and one horizontal on either side of the middle spike. I might have it reversed, but this is my typical layout. Sometimes, I'll use another layout, but it depends on the idea for the town.
For example, if I want to have the town made with straight paths I'll take this layout (you can search for my dream town by the town name). But, in my other town, I'm using another river layout where it starts in the middle of town, turns down, then turns again and flows right across town until it gets to the other end and into the sea. It's good because I can have all of the stuff I want to do with the town on the north side of the river, and I can have the buildings on the south side. So really, it's more for what I want to do in a town that affects the layout for me.
I like your newer layout better. The river looks a lot less "dominating" since it doesn't zig-zag. In your first town, going from your house to Re-Tail, even though both are on the same side of the river, you still have to worry about going "around" a river, as opposed to a straight shot. This one, though, looks a lot easier to navigate and get things done.
OceanSunfish also has a good point, that it all depends on what you want the town to eventually look like. But even in your first town, you'd have trouble delegating a specific "side" to things, since the entire top right of the north half of the river left very little room for PWPs. And you might not want to put things in that little bottom "dip" of the river, in case you wanted a bridge there.
Thank you! I'm getting very comfortable with my new layout, the river is certainly more easy to navigate and I have lots of room for PWPS, especially on the North side of town. Re-Tail is close to the beach and I love my plaza being right in the centre, too.
