Do you have any fun facts about the animals in Animal Crossing?

In some official art, Genji is portrayed with a scroll and brush. That's because he's based off The Tale of Genji, a Japanese story that's widely considered the first published novel in history. On that note, Gulliver was originally a double-reference to his species, a gull, and the titular character of Gulliver's Travels, the saga of an impressionable sailor voyaging to four new lands. The name Gulliver is also kind of a play on "gullible", which is a good way to describe our seafaring friend.

What do you know?

Cyrano is named after Cyrano de Bergerac which was a play in the 1800's. His nose is what gives it away.

Cesar is named after the Roman Empire.

Pate is named after duck meat (I know, weird).

Fauna is named because she is a fawn.

Lily is named after a Lily pad.

Chevre is named after the french word for goat.

Drake and Mallary are named after species of ducks, Drakes and Mallards.

Jeremiah is named after the famous song "Joy to the world" (Jeremiah was a bullfrog).

Kevin is named after Kevin Bacon.

Some of those are quite obvious and there are tons more but those were the only ones off the top of my head.

Yeah, it's kinda morbid that Pate is named after a poultry dish. Maybe that's why she plays "K.K. Dirge"?

Oh, Jeremiah the bullfrog. He was a good friend of mine, but also my first villager to move out and travel to nowhere. Or was it Huck?

On that note, Pate says "A duck won't bite you," but many duck species have bristles in their mouths that resemble teeth. It also might be a reference to…the poultry dish.

Biskit, Peaches and Stitches all resemble stuffed animals, and were all introduced by AC:WW.

Jane, of course, is named after the primatologist Jane Goodall--though she studied chimpanzees, not gorillas.

Puck and Boots are named after things related to their species (alligator boots, ice hockey).

Marcel, Pietro, Raddle, Sterling, and Knox's designs are based on various professions (mime, clown, doctor, knight).

Pave might seem flamboyant, but it fits--male peacocks are the ones with the flashy tails and vibrant colors. Peahens have short tails and duller feathers, which is a common gender difference in birds. Duller, earthy colors help female birds hide while they're incubating eggs and taking care of the chicks. Many male birds have to work to get a mate, which tends to account for their impressive plumage.

Franklin might be named after President Franklin, who wanted the national bird to be a turkey. Instead, it became the eagle. I wonder if Apollo ever gives Franklin grief for this?

Separating into two posts because I have a lot.

Lions are the only villager species that have not been represented by both genders.

Quetzal and Leigh are two super-cool bird villagers who have not moved on from GC, possibly due to their Native American stereotype.

Saharah is named after a location related to her species (Sahara desert). In Japan she is a male character known as Roland.

Aziz is the only AC:GC lion who has not reappeared in future games. He used to have a bindi, but that may have been removed due to cultural sensitivity or the fact that bindis are worn by women.

Jack is based off the myth of Stingy Jack, a tricky man who was denied entrance anywhere after his death. Instead, he was exiled to roam Earth with nothing but a hot coal to light his way, which he put inside a turnip to make a lantern. (Turnips were the original jack-o-lanterns.) It's tradition to make pumpkins scary in October order to keep Jack and other malevolent spirits away. Jack-o-lanterns are such an integral part of Halloween that it's only fitting to make one a star in AC.

Kapp'n is not a turtle, but a kappa, a Japanese demon that tries to drown travelers crossing the water. If you meet one, you have to trick them into looking down. This causes the water to fall from the domes in their heads, therefore draining them of their power. Lucky for us, Kapp'n finds it easer to work in transportation.

Booker is an English bulldog. Copper appears to be a German shepherd, Bones a beagle, and Butch a Rottweiler (without the exact markings or colors).

Bitty is an oxymoron--hippos aren't bitty little things.

Cube is ironic--he's a round penguin named after a square. Then again, he does rock the shirt.

Hopper is a rockhopper penguin, which really do have those crazy eyebrows.

Although I somewhat noticed at least some of these things before, I never really thought about it.

It is very interesting.

"Saharah is named after a location related to her species (Sahara desert). In Japan she is a male character known as Roland."
I knew Saharah is male in Japan, and always think of her as a him. It's the clothes and hair for me. But I've played AC in Japanese, and I always read his name as Lo-ran, not far from Lawrence, as in of Arabia.

Gulliver is a very well-done word play, which works extremely well in English, but his name in Japanese is Joni-, probably a play on Journey.

Joan's full name is Sow Joan, as in Dow Jones, the stock exchange.

There are more animals named after food, and indeed look like food. Take Zucker. His name is Takoya in Japanese. He's designed after takoyaki, octopus that is battered and cooked in a ball, then slathered with sauce and sprinkled with flaked seaweed, right down to the toothpick sticking out of his head. Seeing him always makes me hungry, and actually, as I type this, I'm craving takoyaki...
