Yay, another update! From the previous one with the candy canes, I've learned the following:
1. Read the notification.
2. Have a look at the Event Challenges. If you fulfill them in a certain order, you'll get items quicker. In the long run, it doesn't make a difference though.
3. Don't spend any Leaf Tickets on this. You may initially be in a frenzy to collect all items, but if you regularly do camper requests and enter the quarry with help from friends, you'll end up with all the items and many leftover countdown charms.
Yes - don't spend Leaf Tickets! I did spend maybe 60 (I think I entered the quarry 3 times on Leaf Tickets) for the candy canes, but it was totally unnecessary. I ended up making 2 of everything and about 8 fences and 5 streetlights and 3 rugs, so totally unnecessary to have spent the Leaf Tickets.
So far, I've been impressed that these special events don't require that you spend resources or real money in order to finish them. I know there was a glitch with the previous event for some people, but we definitely had plenty of time and the resources came up enough that it was really easy to get at least one of everything.
I used the leaf tickets at least once for the canes and probably didn't need to. So far it seems easier to get the charms.
On a side note, it looks like this event will have some items that will probably show up towards the end--much like the stuffed stocking.. The catalog shows a New Year's hat and a bowl of New Year's noodles.
Oh, but where can I get pizza-plant seeds? - Stitches, ACCF
Same here, Carrie and Lizabeth! When the candy canes had just arrived, I used leaf tickets (once) to get into the quarry. Afterwards, I felt really sorry about that, because I earned enough candy canes to make even the most expensive items twice (not to mention the 13 Jingle fences for a maze that turned out to be disappointing). Now all that Jingle stuff sits unused in my inventory. The one and only advice I had needed for this kind of event was to not use leaf tickets. This was mentioned on this board, but way too late for me. Hence this thread to warn people as early as possible while it might still help them.
Looking forward to those two unreleased items as well! Will be nice to see everyone with a new year's hat instead of a Mario hat or a Santa hat for a change.
Getting those charms turns out to be pretty easy: it's day 3 and I only need one more item. I'm not even going to use the quarry for this, because I'd much rather have rustic essence. Love those kites BTW!
Yes! Definitely don't spend leaf tickets! I have over 500 extra candy canes after crafting one of each Christmas item without spending any leaf tickets!
& it's helpful to note that some of the New Years items are essentially free to craft, since if it costs 40 countdown charms to craft, for example, you will receive 40 countdown charms as a reward for crafting it.

I only used Leaf Tickets to craft items during the Christmas event. In my defense, I only had 5 days to do it.
This time, I have plenty left over after crafting one of each item. I even crafted another of one item to make New Year's look a lot better in my Campsite, thanks to Gaijin Goombah giving me ideas. Going into the quarry has also helped, and I earn a bit of money on top of it. I've yet to get a perfect gold nugget streak. =\
Considering I got a good 140-180 more than needed, going to the quarry by Leaf Tickets might be overkill.
The quarry helped me out with the Christmas and New Years event. I managed to get all the Christmas items just in time and I’m almost done getting all the New Years items which I should be able to finish just in time the event ends.
After getting all the Christmas items, I had around 100 Candy Canes left over so I just sold them all and got lots of bells for it.
