There is a LOT that they could do with Animal Crossing on the Switch. The Switch is a significantly larger upgrade than any other console Nintendo had released to date. But I feel there should be a focus in what they should be doing.

In one all-encompassing statement; Make Animal crossing feel more cinematic and immersive than ever before, and fill voids in gameplay.

I can't say much for that last half, as I haven't played the newest game in the franchise, much less all of them, but I can definitely add my two cents on improving the characters, world, visuals, and more.

I'm gonna start this off with one idea then this will run into the replies. So, let's start from the start!

My first idea is the return of the cab ride. My reasoning for this is that it feels more personal than the introductions to most other games. It may be the personality of the driver, it may be how he speaks, it may be the enclosed space, it could be many things. But it feels nicer than the conversation with Rover on the train (Sorry Rover!) for whatever reason, despite the fact the dialogue is similar.
I also like that they used the fact that it was raining to help shape your character's personality. No matter how they do the introduction, I feel like one of these situations where the feelings toward the situation are very split in real life would be a nice thing to use to shape your character's personality. Put personality on my Return-to board.

I feel that this should simply be the intro sequence, and that traveling between other areas (I'll get to that later) and other people's towns should be a separate mode of transportation.

Okay, I’m gonna be honest with you, it was like, midnight last night when I made that post. It’s not my worst midnight post, but nonetheless, it’s a midnight post, so I wasn’t at my best. So let me re-write it so i can better get my ideas out.

Essentially, the new Animal Crossing on the Switch should be a reboot, for several reasons. It would be an insult to call it a sequel or extension, both to itself and the past games. It would be too much to little to call it an extension of the previous games, yet too much to say that it is an EXTENSION of the past games, when they’re so much less compared to it. So I think that “new life” or “new world” should be the theme of the game, and the subtitle should emphasise the fact that the game is essentially the series beginning anew.

The goal: Make Animal Crossing more atmospheric, cinematic and immersive

With the ability to create much more detailed lighting, weather effects, and other technical improvements, Nintendo should be focusing on making the game more atmospheric. These technical advancements should be used to make the game feel more cinematic as well, such as changing up how scripted scenes play out, with various different camera angles, some form of lip-syncing, and more facial expressions. Using the more available space, they should try to expand the personalities of many of the villagers, with more character-unique lines, unique expressions, unique animations, and more.

Idea one: Create a main theme in the feel of Wild World’s. The theme in that game beats out all other Animal Crossing themes. I only started playing it this week, and watched the movie less than a week ago (which featured the same theme) yet it still has this air of nostalgia around it. It’s nostalgic and calming, and no matter how much I listen to any other Animal Crossing theme, they just doesn’t have that feel. This would reflect the more atmospheric nature of the switch AC perfectly.
Idea two: Bring back the cab ride, or use a similar alternative. The cab ride felt much more personal than the usual conversation with Rover, despite still playing out near identically. Perhaps it was the enclosed space; perhaps it was his personality; perhaps it was him using the fact that is was raining as a way to shape your character’s personality. No matter what way Nintendo goes with it, I feel like using a similar situation like that, as in where the reaction would be very split in real life, would benefit the game.

I like your ideas! There is definitely room to enhance the series. Compare any of Nintendo's other series throughout the years - Mario jumped from 2D to 3D, Zelda jumped from top-down to third-person, Mario Kart got huge upgrades in how the tracks are laid out... Now compare Wild World to New Leaf. Sure, the graphics are nicer, but the layout is very similar.

Heck, I sometimes feel like the difference between AC:GC and AC:WW is more than AC:WW to AC:NL. AC:WW introduced hairdos, hats, glasses, slingshots, watering cans, hybrids, and more rooms than just 1st floor/basement/upstairs. Sure, AC:NL introduced the wet suit, megaphone, PWPs, and the concept of being the mayor, but ultimately the way you play it is very similar, as is the camera angles.

Anyway, I truly hope there's a ton of magic for AC: Switch. I'd love to see a huge upgrade.

Yeah, Animal Crossing has pretty much been nothing but adding new items, clothes, furniture, and some new mechanics every couple of games. The Switch game needs to feel like an Animal Forest; and assuming you still become the mayor like you do in New Leaf, though if it's a reboot i wouldn't suggest that, you would get to make something big out of nearly nothing, and i like the thought of that.

Honestly, i think if they really wanna go for that more atmospheric, calmer style, they should drop the Mayor mechanic, or at least make it something you have to earn instead of starting with it.

I feel it would be interesting if they made the camera angle and graphics more like how 3D platformer games tend to be (which sorta died as a genre, since now RPGs and shooting games are more popular; although Super Mario Odyssey did just come out...). Instead of more top-down, how it is defaulted by now, make it more where the camera is always behind you and at level with the ground, like most other 3D games.

The world should be more split up into different areas, instead of just one big seaside cliff area. Nintendo should even take example from their own franchises: Pokemon, Zelda, Earthbound, I mean there's just countless examples. I'd say the towns in those games are even laid out more town-like than Animal Crossing, ironically enough.

For example, there would be a forest town area, with very heavy trees, almost like a rainforest, and it rains frequently in this area. The houses look like huts made of sticks. Then leave this area, the music changes, environment noise changes (like you can do in Happy Home Designer), weather changes, etc. and the whole aesthetic changes. So in a way, like multiple areas or districts of one big area. Other areas could be beach, urban, farm, etc. Just make it feel really big. Heck, this is sorta already done in Pocket Camp, albeit on a smaller scale.

As for smaller changes: allow furniture to be placed diagonally. Allow items on the walls to be moved vertically, so one can be placed above another in the same horizontal spot. More clothing accessory items such a jewelry, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. New modes of getting around like maybe a bike or skateboard. Nintendo's other games already do this stuff.

Villagers should have more personality types. For example, Punchy is a lazy villager, but has no awareness that he is a cat. Maybe make the villagers aware of their own species. Maybe they'd each have a preferred area of town to live in.

I have an idea for a special character, but it may not go over well. There can be a special character who doesn't speak your game's language- they speak in a weird made-up gibberish with made-up symbols. You can find books somehow on this language (or maybe scrolls washed up at sea if it's a "dead language"), and after you find them, more of this characters words turn to English (or whatever language) until you can fully understand them. Maybe this would be a character that visits once a week. However, I feel a lot of players would find this annoying, but it's an idea.

Also: more jobs. Have it where you can maybe play a weed-plucking minigame for a villager, and based on your performance under a time limit, you can get a certain number of bells. Keep the resource thing from Pocket Camp, so you can find resources and have them custom-made into furniture. But also keep the normal ways of getting furniture, like Tom Nook.

Maybe also, have separate pockets for different types of items. One for furniture, one for tools (or tools equip automatically with certain buttons and don't take up pocket space), one for clothes, etc. As well, make the fruit more useful. Maybe you can mix fruits into smoothies and sell them to villagers?

So yeah here's a bunch of random ideas.

Ah, here's an idea. What with the more atmospheric nature, i felt that the player beginning the game as Mayor would be an unfavorable choice, right? Well, how do you decide how you would like your town?

First, up, even while you're not mayor, the town will still progress. Things will still be built, and things will still be changed.

But how is this progression decided? How do you decide the style of your town, if you don't have any control over it? Well, i feel like the look of the town should be based on your personality, and therefore, the personality test. Think about it- Your character isn't going to go to a village that they wouldn't enjoy, are they? You would be asked questions like, what kinds of things do you like, why are you going to this town you're going to, what you've heard it's like, what you enjoy in life, tons of questions with several different answers for each question that all attribute to various personality stats. This will decide your personality and therefore, the style of town you end up at.

^ I really like that idea. This would make each town really unique. Like maybe my test results would make my town mostly beach-front pier, but there could be areas of jungle or more urban asphalt and concrete as well.

One of my ideas that's going to make most of my others work; REMOVE. WORLD SCROLLING. The reason for this is that if you're going to have a larger, more open town to explore, if you can barely see a few metres behind you, what good is the larger town?

Essentially, the town would be generated using a randomised heightmap, much like Minecraft, with certain criteria needed to be met by said heightmap- For example, Near the top end of the map, there needs to be a cliff-side area of X height that the Town Hall would sit on, for example. This results in a mountain-like area, that descends down to the beachside with several levels to it. The maps should be larger in their size and verticality. Also, these levels need to be less flat- They should have more hilly, slightly raised areas to them, small ditches, so on, so forth. Essentially, make the area more smooth and realistic-ish. This is why i specifically suggested using a randomly generated heightmap.

I think that I would be happy if they changed the camera angle.
I like the way its done now but, I dunno..
I think I'd prefer it kinda first person ish, maybe like how Breath of the Wild looks where the camera follows the player facing the other way, obviously with the scroll wheels you can change direction to look at stuff, but maybe like a camera view as well, so you can see what your character is looking at up close, or take photos in first person of villagers / bugs etc?

I'm all for an adjustable outdoor camera, maybe similar to the way the camera works indoors in Happy Home Designer.

Drawing from Pocket Camp, I love the way they've redesigned pocket storage. Identical items stack on top of one another, and there are separate pockets for different subsets of things (i.e. a pocket for materials, a pocket for collectibles, etc.). I'd love to see the tools have their own pocket, as well as a larger inventory in general. I'm fine if this is something that has to be purchased or unlocked, I just want more space and I know so many other players do too!

This is a pipe dream, but I'd love for the villagers to have their personalities redesigned and redistributed. In my perfect world, these personalities could be akin to the furniture preferences villagers have in Pocket Camp (cute, cool, sporty, etc.). I love that villagers of all genders can have any furniture preference in this game, and since it's always bothered me that ONLY girls are peppy or ONLY boys are jocks in the main series games, I'd like to see that gender barrier diminished.

I think that diving in New Leaf was a good idea but that it wasn't executed particularly well. I think that using the nets from Pocket Camp to catch these sea critters would be a much better option! Perhaps you would leave the net in the water for a half hour or so and come back to find out what sea critters you've caught.

I also want a copy and paste function for letters. I hate writing letters and this would speed up the process greatly.

These aren't the only things I'd like to see in AC Switch, but I'll leave it at this for now. I hope at least the camera is fixed for the next release!!

Yeah diving made it fun at first but then tedious because of how slow it was and the creatures rarely spawned for me so it didnt keep my attention

Aside from copy and paste, the gamecube had that and it seemed great.

I also wish they had their personalities from the gamecube, and the fuctionality of entering houses again without the animals needing to be there. It was neat to see their houses in different times of the day.

• pro design pants, shorts and skirts
• pro design baseball style cap (the hats we can design now are all weird looking, and a baseball cap seems like a simple but versatile enough style to add)
• custom windows, curtains and interior doors like in HHD, ideally with more varieties than HHD had
• ceiling furniture like in HHD (again with more variety)
• maybe custom entryways and staircases? not high on my wish list bc you barely notice the entryways and staircases in a house, but they could add that much more to a themed room

and here's just a wish list for items:

more bathroom and kitchen furniture, wall hanging mirrors, TV remote furniture item, bowl of popcorn furniture item, headbands, earmuffs, more cozy winter hats, animal ear headbands (as opposed to the caps that cover your hair)

This!! At the very least, make the floors and walls match that of the rest of the house. If I remember correctly it still looks like the common wall/floor on the stairwells and entryways.

been thinking about Celeste lately and I have some more ideas

as much as I'm sure everyone loved making constellations, I honestly prefer the more realistic sky in new leaf, but I do feel bad that she lost her observatory. I'd love if in the next game she got her observatory back, but instead she taught us about real life constellations, just like how the rest of the museum you learn about real fish, real bugs, real paintings and real dinosaurs.

I also think it'd be cute if Celeste would come out to the plaza with a smaller telescope to observe events like planets and constellations being at their most visible, and the player could look through the telescope to view them. it'd also be nice to have her out at the plaza instead of Isabelle for the summer and winter solstices. other predictable events like eclipses would be another good reason to get her out of the museum. the zodiac set could be something obtained piece by piece from her throughout the year.

also only semi-related, high and low tides throughout the day. more stuff gets washed up on the beach at low tide and certain critters are easier or harder to find.

Most of the ideas I have read sound interesting.

I mainly hope the switch version is similar to New leaf, the improvements in it were awesome.  I would like more control over where the villagers can move in.

In the past the console versions of the game were not as good, well at least City Folk (it was very limited). I like being major, the pwps, putting your house wherever you want, the town ordinances (especially beautiful town )and other things.

I agree about the diving, it isn't great and could stand improvement. I would like them to remove grass wear.

Customizing the house more would be fun.

I do disagree about the camera. I cannot play any games in 3D, and cannot play first person games because of motion sickness issues it causes. I would hate not to be able to play it.

I like the idea of the switch being portable; you can play at home or take it with you.

Also I love qr codes - I am obsessed - I hope they keep that or something like it.

Something that struck me recently: I'd like to be able to BACK UP MY TOWN.

Other games on the 3DS allow you to back up your saves. Not sure which ones, because the only save I've been paranoid of losing is ACNL, and it wouldn't let me.

It was for this reason I got that popular third-party device so I could back up my towns when the update hit. Nothing happened, and I didn't expect anything bad to happen, but still, I'd played my main town since release, and I'd be SO angry if some random error took it out.

Saves on the Switch are stored directly on the internal memory, so there probably won't be any third-party device to help out on that if they don't implement back ups. I wonder what would happen if you max your internal storage, would saves go to the SD card? (Sorry, this bit only just struck me...) And no, I'm not willing to hack my Switch, period.

The only other thing I really want is to be able to customize my character directly, like in HHD.

What I would like, but would probably never see, is being able to build the town from scratch. Like start with an axe or five, clear some trees, use the lumber to build houses, that sort of thing. Use the shovel to terraform, like filling in that pond and digging out another in a better place, or alter the route of the river. That's what I'd like, but it does feel like pulling too far too soon from the AC feeling.

Love some of the ideas here. Stackable and better storage is high on the wishlist. And larger, more unique maps.

I’m big into landscaping, so I’d love to see better path options. I’d like the ability to design pro paths with transparent portions so you could lay down a round stepping stone, for example. Maybe buyable path designs that match the town themes or bridge patterns?

It’s been said before but my biggest wish would be the ability to choose your neighbors and place their houses where you want. I know the randomness of this is a big part of the game, but some level of control would be welcome. The ability to move an existing villager to a new house later could be a compromise.

I’ll be happy with any new console version of AC, though!

What I would like to see for Animal Crossing Switch would be keeping your Mayorship, but you have to earn it. I hated that all you have to do to become Mayor in New Leaf was help a few villagers and then your apporal rating was high enough that you immediately become Mayor. I would like to see you have to earn it more, and invest more in your town before you become Mayor. I also feel like you should be able to refuse to become Mayor in the town. If you say no to becoming Mayor, either Isabelle or another player should become Mayor. I would also love to see the first player in a town be able to choose one villager to start off in the town, and that villager would never move. On the train ride, (or whatever the Switch version of it is) Rover can ask if you have a friend in the town you're moving to. If you say yes, you can choose that one villager. Then Rover can say something like, "I'm sure that they will be so happy to see you, they'll never want to leave!" When you get to the town, you can have a slightly higher friend level with that person than you would just moving in with a normal viilager. On the train, if you say that you don't have a friend in that town, you could choose a villager to forever stay in your town later. It would also be AWESOME to be able as Mayor, to approve where new villager houses can be. I've lost track of the number of times a villager has put their home right in the middle of my flower garden. It'd also be great for further town customiation.
