Just read on a separate thread that there was an update, and people seemed to react positively. Anyone know when this came out and what it adds to the game?

The Amiibo update came out in December 2016.

It adds a lot of new furniture items, new villagers (though not new personalities), daily and weekly "quests", and Amiibo support.
