My mother is talking about buying the Wii U and I love the animal crossing series. But will I be able to play Animal Crossing: City Folk on the Wii U. And If I can do I have to buy anything special?

the wii u is backwards compatible w all wii games so yeah u can play cf on it
u have to use a wii remote + nunchuck to play it tho and if u wanted to play it on a tv rather than use the wii u gamepad as the screen, u need a sensor bar
bear in mind that the wifi servers r dead for wii and ds games so u cant play online w anyone

I agree with the_husbando but would like to add that it is playable with just the Wiimote itself as well.
