Several questions about this, sorry: I've heard that to change the Gate/Train Station's appearance, you need to have 100 wi-fi interactions. Does this work with only people coming TO your town? Also, does it work if it's the same person, or does it have to be 100 different people? And does it work for local, or only wifi? And is there a count somewhere that you can see how many you've done? Someone please help me understand how this one works.

To get the option to remodel your train station, people need to visit your town. It will not be unlocked if you travel yourself. It can be one person who visits 100 times, it can be 100 people who all visit once, or anything in between. It doesn't matter whether the people visit via local or WiFi, the count will keep going.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I believe that if you sit down at the tree in your Town Plaza, it will display the amount of visitors your town has had at the end of the credits.

xD The credits is quite extensive. It tells you when you went into office, who the residents are and when they moved in. The opening of shops, and the visitors to your town.
