Remember when ACC had more on the homepage? I seem to remember back when they had something similar to "Member of the week". Each week on the homepage there would be a different user for Member of the week and one to show the user for the most posts made that week.
I think the pro of this would be, it could potentially get more users active in posting on the public boards but a con of this could also result into a lot of excessive/spam posts. We could have rules and guidelines for this though. Let's say I_love_tangy makes the most posts three weeks in a row, then she would get Top Poster each week, but at least Member of the week would be different every week.
I know we would have to figure out a system of how to choose Member of the week, and if the staff would have time to do this each week, but I think it would be neat to have something so everyone feels special. I think it would draw a lot more people to join and become more active if they already have an account.
"...but a con of this could also result into a lot of excessive/spam posts."
I think you've hit the nail on the head there, Eden. Most people would behave in a sensible manner, but it would still be open to abuse from a small minority.
I am also not sure if it would be fair for certain threads (e.g. Forum Games threads) to be involved in the "Top Poster" award. For example, someone could make several valuable contributions to threads on the NL boards within a week, while there could be a "Count to X number of posts" thread on the Forum Games board and someone may make 50 different posts on that thread within a week. While there isn't anything wrong with this, would it be fair for someone to be "Top Poster" for posting a single number 50 times on the same thread?
However, I really like the idea of having a "Member of the week". Often, many people do great things on ACC without getting the recognition they deserve, so this would be a simple and effective way to praise members who help out the community. Perhaps staff/certain staff could nominate one person every week based on what they've seen on the site and then a winner could be mutually agreed upon.

There would certainly be ways to make a top poster award more fair, but no matter what, people will always find things that there is no good way to deal with.
We eventually plan on having some sort of personal awards system in which there is a permanent record for when people win awards, such as winning official ACC contests. This seems like it would be a great addition to the awards system.
Let's go Gophers! Ski-U-Mah!
Sorry, I don't accept random FCRs.
I really like the idea of a member of the week! The only thing I'm not sure of is how feasible coding and updating a new feature for the homepage is at the moment.
I think the best way to get this going quickly is to use what we already have, our Noticeboard system. We can already use it to gather responses and input from the community, as well as announce winners.
I think a good alternative way to become a "member of the week" would be to have things that encourage activity and play, in the true animal crossing spirit.
My ideas for those would quite simply be: the most bells collected in a week and the most 5 star ratings achieved.
As you may have noticed, bells have created a nice wave of competition over the years, and this would be fairly easy to implement as well as leading to more activity within the users. The cool thing about it, would be that no one would be at a disadvantage, because it would be the net difference each week that would count, so this would encourage new members and everyone to help compete. Maybe you could even extend it to top five or ten? Which in itself would allow a whole new giveaway section to be made, and well, you get the idea.
The other version could be for positive 5 star wifi ratings. This would have the same effect on giveaways, encourage activity on ACC and would allow new people to meet each other. I do not think abuse would be that common, as it hardly seems to be now with the current system.
Just an alternative thought to this suggestion. I don't recall seeing it before, so if it has I do apologise.
Edit: Just adding in, that the main objection to the poster idea is an increase in spam. This wouldn't contribute to spam at all.
As all things once did,
This too shall pass.
