Basically what the title says. I was never really in to Amiibos but at some point I decided to look up custom ones, and there are some really good ones out there. I was thinking of getting one for a friend, and I'll probably just ask the seller, but as I don't actually know how amiibos work I might just end up looking stupid.

So, does anyone have experience with buying or making custom amiibos? Are they still functional after customization? I tried googling "do custom amiibos work" and variations of such, but all the results were just articles on how great it is to make customs. If someone could give me some info it would be much appreciated.

It should work, the actual part that scans into games - the NFC chip - is inside the base. I mean, I guess they can screw with the base and that would therefore result in a product that no longer functions? But I don't think that's going to happen, since all people are customizing is the figure itself.
