I just upgraded from a launch 3DS to a New XL last week, and I'm looking to add some more games to my collection.

I've ordered Fire Emblem: Fates: Birthright and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward and they are going to be here tomorrow, and I'm also interested in getting Fantasy Life.

Are there any games for the 3DS that anyone could recommend to me? And if you can, could you list a few things that you like about the game too? Any help is much appreciated

Looks like you've got quite a few already, I'll give you a list but I'm not sure how many of these you already own:

Fire Emblem Awakening
Kirby Triple Deluxe
LoZ: A Link Between Worlds
LoZ: Majora's Mask 3D
LoZ: Ocarina of Time 3D
LoZ: Triforce Heroes
Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
Super Mario 3D Land
Phoenix Wright AA Dual Destinies
Yokai Watch
Yoshi's New Island

Good call on VLR by the way, playing through it right now and it's great. Plus the third game is coming out in June.

Thanks for the great suggestions! The only ones on your list that I have already are the LoZ ones. I've played the original AA trilogy and Investigations, but not AJ. Maybe I should consider getting it and DD.

Just curious, what exactly is Yokai Watch like? I've seen several people saying it's really good, but I don't know anything about it.

And I know, I loved 999, but I'd never been able to find VLR at my Gamestop, so I just caved and got it through amazon Zero Time Dilemma looks really good from what I've heard about it, can't wait for it to come out. Hopefully I'll be finished with VLR by then!

Ah, you should definitely get Fire Emblem Awakening then. If you like Fates, you'll like that one. And yeah, Dual Destinies is a great game.

Yokai Watch is a very quirky game. It's better if you just watch some gameplay footage of it. It's an RPG that's often compared to Pokemon, but the only similarity I see is that you befriend Yokai and use them to battle. Just check it out on youtube lol. It's certainly not for everyone, and the battle system has gotten a lot of complaints, so I would see if you're okay with how it looks first. The sequel is coming to America in September, so if you're interested now would be a good time to get it.

VLR is such a huge improvement on 999 too. It makes it really easy to get the true ending and all the other ones by just being able to jump to any part in the story, as opposed to having to play through the whole thing like in 999. I think they just released some English footage for ZTD yesterday too.

I'd really recommend Stella Glow. It's an SRPG so you might be a bit burnt out after Fire Emblem but I'd really recommend playing it at some point. It seems to have gone under the radar but it's one of my favourite 3DS games.

Other than that I've really enjoyed Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX & Rhythm Thief if you're into rhythm games. & I really liked Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros too.

My personal favorites right now would be:

-Fire Emblem Awakening - I played Casual mode, no shame in that. I love the gameplay, the strategy, and just the storyline in general. More than anything, though, I love the wide variety of diverse characters. Seriously, my day was made every time I looked at a support conversation, whether it be funny, emotional or heartwarming.

-Pokemon X/Y and OR/AS - If you're playing AS then you probably know why I love these games.

-Animal Crossing: New Leaf - It's hard to believe such a casual, laid back game about anthropomorphic talking animals could be so much fun! I think the fact that it's so casual, but it gives you so much to do is what makes it so addicting.

-Super Smash Bros. 3DS - The sheer competitiveness of the gameplay! I can't really explain why I love it so much, it's just to addicting!

-The Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes - This game is interesting in that you almost feel like you've developed a bond with your teammates whenever you complete a level with them. You all have to rely on each other to progress through the level, so no person feels like the odd one out. That, and the gameplay is just really fun. You may have some trouble finding people online to play with nowadays, but still, it's worth a try.

-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - The gameplay is seriously fun, the story is amazing, the characters are three-dimensional (both literally and metaphorically) and it's a Zelda game. Anything else I need to say.

-Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - While not as good as the first game, I still found myself falling in love with the characters, the story, and the gameplay. It's quite a comical game, with Luigi's awkward and desperate antics, everything with the Polterpup the Toads, etc. And I also found several parts of the story to be surprisingly heartwarming, so extra points for that.

-Kid Icarus: Uprising - I. LOVE. This game! The wide cast of characters are absolutely hilarious (I nearly woke my family up in the middle of the night laughing at Hewdraw, and anything Pit and Palutena say to each other is golden,) it has really interesting storylines, and I was surprised to find that some moments genuinely touched me (the entirety of the Chaos arc.) Something else that I also loved about the game was its music, some of which you can find in Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U. Seriously, it's just a great game.

-Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
- Not sure this is what you're looking for, but I am obsessed with this remake right now. My favorite thing about it is probably the stories, and the fact that most of the time you're figuring things out along with the main characters, so you aren't just controlling them; it's practically like you're in the game. There are twists at every turn that genuinely catch you off guard, forcing you to rethink your plan for the next section. Unearthing these secrets... there really isn't anything like it. And the characters are lovable and three-dimensional, so you'll be rooting for them throughout the entire series.

I'll let you know if I think of more.

I do recommend these games

Pokemon X/Y/ORAS - If you have or haven't played original R/S/E, then you should definately get ORAS however new mega stones can't be carried over to X/Y with the exception of blazikenite. I do recommend having pokemon bank for this

Pokemon Rumble World - This game will get difficult as you progress however there's a in-game purchases

Pokemon Shuffle - This game is also available on iOS and android. Same in-game purchases available

Legend of Zelda OoT & MM 3D - If you played the original versions before, then these 2 games are worth playing for.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS - The demo is available if you want to try the game out
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Super Mario 3D Land
Pokemon Rumble Blast - This will also get difficult as you progress and raise world rank
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to infinity - Game will get difficult as you progress. Regular attacks will do a fixed damage of 5

Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon - A very difficult game if you like to take the challenge however the same mechanics from gates to infinity will apply and you won't get the time to grind and farm items as you progress in the game.

Yo-Kai watch - It's like pokemon as my friend told me. If you're curious about the gameplay, you can try the demo

The upcoming game that I know is Kirby Planet Robobot. You can play the demo version of it in some stores.

Fire Emblem Awakening
Pokemon Shuffle
Yo-Kai watch
Kid Icarus: Uprising

No. Just, no. None of these.

-FEA has the usual shallow, cookie-cutter gameplay the rest of the series has, the same cookie-cutter characters, same cookie-cutter story telling, and just overall shallowness. If you've played one Fire Emblem, you've played them all. And if you haven't played one, you're not missing much.

-Pokemon Shuffle is a very shallow freemium game. It's a puzzle game along the lines of Candy Crush Saga, which basically means Purely luck based. Not much real skill involved in it. Plus, remember, it's a FREEMIUM game, which means it will try to trick you into paying money constantly.

-Yo-Kai watch has a whole entire cast of unlikeable, bogus oddball characters and random story telling similar to that of Earthbound. Out of all the usable monsters, I literally found ZERO that were any good. The gameplay itself is also very scripted and gimmicky.

-Kid Icarus: Uprising is just a typical animal cruelty/nature destruction game that depicts animals, nature and nature lovers as these evil demonic creatures while humans are oh-so perfect and oh-so misunderstood. The game also has broken controls and gameplay, plus an over-use of AR cards.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. "Cuddlesworth up to his old tricks again/This guy hates EVERYTHING." Yeah, including POKEMON, a franchise people should know I like. Honestly, I think I have a good reason to say these games aren't that good. I'm not trying to start a fight, I'm just saying these four games in particular are not as good as people want to believe, and Caveat Emptor and what-not. Buy them if you want, but don't be surprised if they disappoint. (...Well except for Pokemon Shuffle. That game's free, but still pretty dumb)

BTW, you mentioned Fantasy Life. I have it, but I haven't finished it yet. It's an okay game, but I think there are areas they could really improve on. For example, there are different crafting jobs, but they all have the same gameplay. Another problem I had is that the story always seems to take the happiest rout possible. Like everything turns out good for everyone. ...Though, mind you, I haven't finished the game. The ending could be very sad for all I know.

^Agreed. If you have multiple people recommending the same games and one guy coming in and saying don't get them because I don't like them, you probably shouldn't listen.

^ Is that so? Often times the people saying "Oh, this game is so good" are just sheeping onto the game, where the one guy saying "These games suck!" often has some very good reasons for it. Even if you don't listen to what that person has to say, you should at least consider a second opinion. And in all honesty, I can't even remotely see what people see in those four games. I'm sorry, but I can't.

This a 3DS game RECOMMENDATIONS thread, not a 3DS game criticism thread. How about you suggest some games you like rather than berating games that others like and enjoy? It's hardly surprising if people think you're negative if all you're putting out here is negativity.

^ I guess I could list games I liked.

-If you're a Pokemon fan, both Pokemon X/Y and Pokemon OR/AS are pretty good RPGs. They're not Pokemon Emerald or Pokemon Diamond, but I think they're at least better than the Black/White games. Plus, the Super Bases are a nice upgrade to the secret bases.

-Before Corrin and Bayonetta were released, I played Super Smash Brothers 3DS to death. Now I don't even touch the game anymore. Still venomous towards their addition. Still, it has simple, yet hyperactive gameplay that's easy to get hooked to.

I also have Fantasy Life and Zelda: Triforce Heroes. They're good games, but I don't know if I'd recommend them. My problem is I often don't feel comfortable suggesting games because I'm worried I'll suggest a game that person will end up not liking. I feel more comfortable listing games to watch out for, because a lot of the times they're terrible games that inexplicably became popular despite having crummy game play, and often times I want to be someone who's not alone in the realization.

Kirby: Planet Robobot is an amazing sequel to Triple Deluxe that came out just recently, along with Kirby series amiibo. I have finished it 96%, and highly recommend it to anyone who likes easy 2D platformers. It's an average Kirby game, if you have played one before, along with a mech suit.

Okay, thanks for all the recommendations, guys! I apologize for not responding sooner, I haven't had a lot of time to read this thread until now, but now that I do, I'd like to once again say thanks for the suggestions. There were some games listed that I already had (but that's more my fault for not saying what I already had), but the ones that I don't have do look like they could be fun, and I'm willing to give them a try I will list these at the end of my post after a hopefully brief word.

CuddlesWorth, thank you for putting forth the effort to list games that you enjoyed instead of continuing to bash the ones that you couldn't personally stand. I understand what you're saying that you don't want to recommend something for fear of the person ending up not liking it, as my anxiety often puts me in similar situations. But in my experience, it's a live and learn process. If you recommend something and then someone doesn't like it, it's not anybody's fault. It's just the fact that different people have different tastes in what they think is good. Someone won't know what they will or won't like until they give it a try for themselves.

I don't really agree with your point of view when you said that only the people that say a game is bad can provide good reasons for their opinion because it didn't really make much sense. Yes, second opinions are often very beneficial to the perspective player, but people that like a given game can list reasons as to why just as well as someone that hated the same game can provide reasons as to why they didn't. The key is to open your mind to more than one side's reasoning rather than staying rigidly and unyielding to one side. Because if you do that, regardless of what your original intentions are, you come off as rude and berating to other people (as you did in your original post in this thread), which can negatively impact their opinions of you. In the end, people will still have differing opinions and tastes in things such as video games. We cannot change that. But what we can do is try to see things from multiple viewpoints, empathize with and try to get along with one another. Try to understand where others are coming from. For example, I have been playing FEF since I got it almost every single day. I really enjoy it. But I also understand that you personally don't like the series, and I'm okay with that. I don't like Gates to Infinity for various reasons (even though I love the series as a whole), but one of my best friends says it's his favorite game in the spinoff series. Trying to say anything is purely bad or purely good is just an opinion, due to what differing people perceive as objectively "bad" or "good". Trying to list one side as purely right or wrong is impossible in nearly any situation. To end this, I'd just like to tell you I'm not trying to annoy you by speaking directly to you in this reply, and I hope you don't interpret it as me trying to be aggressive, because I didn't intend it that way at all. And I would like to once again thank you for your suggestions in your recent post, I truly appreciate it.

Thank you everyone, once again, and here are the ones so far that I didn't have already that really stood out to me once I looked into them, and that I'm willing to give a shot:

Yoshi's New Island
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Stella Glow
Super Smash Bros. 3DS
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Fantasy Life

If anybody else has any more suggestions for me, I'd love to hear them

Actually it's no problem at all. Sometimes you gotta try the game out once before you say "i hate the game" or "i don't like the game" or anything like that. Some games have demos so you can download and try them out for once. Some demos can provide bonus stuff to the full game like Bravely Default and Bravely Second. For Gates to infinity demo, well you'll continue up to the point where you saved at after the demo ended in full game.

The other games I do recommend are

Bravely Default & Bravely Second - I do highly recommend playing bravely default first before playing bravely second

and Hyrule Warriors Legends - This game is more difficult than the original version although not easy for those that played warriors (such as dynasty, samurai and orochi warriors) games for the 1st time. You gotta be more strategic in this game otherwise it'll get difficult to multi-task. You can get the Season Pass DLC if you want to play the game to its fullest.

There are VC games for the 3DS system so if there's any 3DS VC games that may catch your interest, just go ahead and look around in the eShop.

Just to let you know about SSB 3DS is that you can download the whole DLC bundle without buying the DLCs separately.

I know, what I said agrees with what you're saying. You have to try before you judge something. Nobody else can decide whether or not you like something for you.

I have a friend that plays both of those games, and he's always telling me about gameplay and how cool he thinks they are. I'll look into those too.

I have been thinking about Hyrule Warriors Legends, as well. I'm okay with strategizing and thinking about how to best go about a task, so I think that won't be a problem for me.

And thanks for the heads up on the DLC thing, that's good to know.

"I don't really agree with your point of view when you said that only the people that say a game is bad can provide good reasons for their opinion because it didn't really make much sense."

I don't think I really meant that, so much as I meant that often times liking a game has a sheep effect. Not saying people don't genuinely have good reasons for liking a game.

I would recommend Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, provided you don't have it on the Wii or WiU. Also provided that you have a New3DS. It's a JRPG with a fairly large world and a lot to do.

The Professor Layton series is a good group of puzzle games that I highly recommend, although if you don't like puzzle games then you probably shouldn't get it.

I recently got Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, and while it's a little strange at first (You gotta build your own map.), it really grew on me. It's a turn-based rpg with map building elements. I would recommend it.

Hope this helps!

Ah, okay, that makes more sense. Thank you for clarifying that for me.

I might have to look into Xenoblade Chronicles.

I actually am a big fan of Professor Layton already It is a great series though.

That Etrian Odyssey game you mention sounds intriguing as well.

Thanks for the suggestions!

There's phoenix wright vs professor layton if you're into this crossover game of puzzles and trials although I do recommend phoenix wright: ace attorney series including phoenix wright vs professor layton.

also as I and KEEBY64 mentioned we also recommend Kirby Planet robobot as well, but there's amiibo support so you need NFC reader (depending on if you have original 2/3DS or 3DS XL models) for the amiibo support.

The other upcoming games that I do recommend are Pokemon Sun & moon which is around on november, Dragon Quest 7, and Yo-Kai watch 2 which they're coming around on september.
