So I have a gut feeling this has been suggested before, but I checked the site features queue board and couldn't find it. So my suggestion is to be able to delete your own posts, but with restrictions:

1. Unable to delete if there is a reply below the post, or if someone is in the process of making one, in order to preserve continuity.
2. Post will be deleted from public view, but remain hidden to staff (possibly for a set period of time) in order to prevent abuse.
3. Possibly within the same time limit as the edit feature, or a time limit to be determined.

I think its sufficient enough for users to just edit their post within the time limit and erase all the text than to actually delete the record of a post. At least this way if the erased post throws a wrench in thread continuity, viewers can see that a post was "erased" somewhere along the line.

That's why I included point #1. If there is another reply or someone is in the process of making a reply, the post cannot be deleted, so no wrenches can be thrown anywhere. Simply having a blank post can be seen as spamming and having a post that says "delete this post please" creates additional work for staff, if they decide to delete the post at all. Which could all be avoided if users could just delete the post themselves

I don't see why we can't delete posts. Locking the thread takes time to get eliminated and takes up room in the forums. I really want to be able to delete threads.

One of the problems with members deleting posts is we quite often have to use old posts to prove or disprove different disputes that are sent in as tickets.

Just for an example off the top of my head, say someone is harassing you with unwanted PTs. You send in a ticket about it. The person doing the harassing could just delete all the posts they sent you and there is no proof it ever happened.

True, but can't you have the posts backed up somewhere else? If it's possible? Like when someone makes a post it's automatically sent somewhere to save but the user can delete it at any time. That'd actually be very arduous though, going through all those posts to find evidence for a dispute. So most likely that's a no. Excuse me if that sounds dumb.

Or like walkingonthesun said, can't it be deleted automatically but not really deleted, just available for the staff to see?

Maybe you could have the ability to archive them instantly. They aren't actually deleted, but no one other than the staff can see them. That way, from a normal users perspective they are deleted, and from a staff member's they are accessible if need be.

That might actually work but one problem could be, if people did that, a thread might not make much sense with chunks gone out of the conversation.

I'm not on the coding side of the site so I have no idea if this is feasible for now or if it would have to wait for the site reboot.

I badly want an update like this, there's some... embarrassing and personal stuff I gave out on public boards on this site a few years back (e.g. 2011/2012) I'd like to delete.. Sure those posts are archived now but it's easy to find the archived posts with Google. (please don't make it harder to find archived posts though I love being able to look back on old memories )

(Also sorry for bumping a thread from last month but I really want this)

i think either this or unlimited editing would be a good addition/change, tbh.

This is definitely the best way that this could be done. It could be a sort of option like "Hide." And it's hidden only to non-staff members. And for the continuity of conversation as Jari brings up, it could possibly have the "spot" in the thread where the post was with the user and avatar and all that, but instead of the actual post, it would read "This post was hidden by the user."
