Hello! I've been told by my family/friends that I am an artist. Personally, I feel as if I am mediocre at best. I want to eventually take a class or two for realism and another for painting; because, right now I am a cartoonist and I am eager to broaden my abilities.
Anyone in the GG community draw, paint or even sculpt? I'd love to meet those people and look at their art!

I don't know that I'd necessarily call myself an artist, but I do it as a hobby a lot. Mainly drawing cartoons but I do sculpt or paint on rare occasions. Right now I'm working on making a yard decoration for Halloween. Its a 2 ft tall Beetlejuice cut out of foam board and painted with acrylic paint
That picture looks so cool! I have been drawing for a long time but I am a little self taught and I went to classes. However I feel like a novice!!!! I have a deviantart account if you want to connect there!
But yeah a good book to check out for realism is Betty Edwards "Drawing on The Right Side of The Brain". When I took an art class we used that book and it teaches you to actually SEE the world exactly how it is.
Also youtube tutorials. Study anatomy and how the body moves. Once you get that down you can create cartoon characters with a believable anatomy (in the way they bend or move). But yeah my best advice to give (if you want it) would be to just draw from life. Every chance you get. Practice practice practice!
Megan! That sounds so cool, did you ever finish it?!
Hey all, I've done a bit of art in pretty much every media and have taken over 4 years worth of art classes and have studied art for longer.
From one artist to another, OP, I think it can't be your friends and your family who truly get to say when you're an artist or not. It's really more of a personal journey to a point where YOU yourself can say "Y'know what? I see what everyone is saying-- I AM an artist."
I like your style, too, OP. It has a nice, distinct quality to it.
I think you should definitely work on drawing from life, especially focusing on objects, color, perspective (ie backgrounds) and value. Your artwork would benefit massively from studying these areas, and you could focus on building grand scenes for your cartoons with well-suggested props and backgrounds.
Like Lotzoh suggests, studying anatomy may come of use to you, though it may not, it truly depends on you and what you classify as what you want your art to be.
Art is the one discipline where this classifies true in every media : "Learn the rules, then break them."
I'm always open for art questions too, though I'm not very active on here, so be prepared for me to not always answer.

Thanks, everyone!! I appreciate the good critique and tips
I just got back into my art... I stopped for a while due to my depression... Also a bit of artist's block.
Mumble9954 I used to have a book titled "anatomy made easy" and it helped me with drawing people... I also used to have one of those little flexible mannequins to help me with drawing people. Fsr i find it easier to draw a full body female than a full body male... Mostly because I used to draw an OC of mine who is female a lot... I think an anatomy class would benifit me... I'm mostly self taught tbh and I wanna see my art grow faster with outside help involved!
I have a lot more drawings that I'm willing to share on my facebook... I think i can copy the urls and paste them here

I'm a little late to this post, but I'm currently studying animation and I started up a DeviantArt account here to work on my skills, improve, and learn from other artists. I think communities like DeviantArt are very useful! You can get critiques from other artists, loads of tutorials and resources, and there's so much room for inspiration!
I'm a hobbyist. I always wanted to be an artist but I just started underperforming and I lacked improvement. I do love drawing, though, and I have a MASSIVE (think 150+) collection of professional-grade art markers.

Hi! Fellow artist here! ^_^ I got my major in animation, and I now work as a motion graphics artist for an ad agency. I enjoy drawing cartoons during my spare time, which you can see on my deviantART page!
Mellie: I like the photo you posted! You have a cool, edgy style. As some have already stated, learning how to draw realistically is a great skill to have. It even helps with cartoons, because once you understand how bodies work, you can better exaggerate the way a character looks and moves and such (if that makes sense). And painting is great both as a technical skill and to understand color better. Best of luck in your artistic journey, looks like you already have a good foundation!
MissQuinzel You are so good!! I have not been on DeviantArt in a while so I can't remember how to follow/watch someone. Can you DM me an Insta or a Tumblr, if you have one, so I can follow your art accounts?? I love it!!
