I have been having a blast with this game recently, but I have a few questions.

For instance, I know that FO4 has multiple endings (with multiple achievements for each ending) and since I want all the achievements, I need to know when those quests appear because I'll need to plan out my different save files. So my question is, is it easy to tell when that moment comes (like will you get a warning before starting a quest) or not?

Also, I really like the settlement aspect in the game, I can tell it will get addicting, but I'm curious as to how you acquire these workshop item materials. And are these materials that you collect get placed in your junk inventory?

Finally, are there any tips for new Fallout players? This is my first FO game which I've got 10 hours into so far and am level 10. I think I'm doing alright, but I might not have the best strategy.

Okay, so there are four factions that you can side with in the game. You've likely already met one of them, the Minutemen, and you don't need to worry about them because they don't conflict with any other factions, nor do they have any achievements past the first two or three quests. You can do the other three simultaneously up to a certain point, after which you will need to choose one. With one faction it'll straight up tell you that doing this will make you enemies with the others. The other two are direct rival factions, so while it doesn't give you a warning, if you're following along you should be able to easily tell when that point is. Additionally, for the two rivaling factions, you only need to complete one of their storylines because the achievement is the same for the end of both of them. However the second to last quests in both of their storylines have achievements so you'll at least need to play up to that point. You'll also need to complete storyline for the third faction. So at most you'll need to play through two full storylines. The factions that I'm referring to will become clear once you encounter them.

For workshop materials, yes, anything in your junk category can be used. Pick up anything. Cups, clipboards, pots and pans, teddy bears, anything. There should be at option at the workbench to move all junk or something along those lines. That instantly puts all materials into your workbench. You can also scrap almost anything around your settlements for materials.

What's your strategy? What type of build are you going for?

Are the factions you can side with Minutemen, Railroad, Brotherhood of Steel, and maybe the Institute? I know the first 3 and guessing the last one. But thanks, I'll keep a mental note of that when I get closer to completing the story.

Ah, that makes sense for the settlements. It makes a lot more sense now.

As for build, I really don't have a "dedicated" build. I have mostly been putting points in Endurance and Agility for V.A.T.S. and more AP. I'm probably going to switch to ranking up other skills, but I'm not sure. Maybe Strength or Intelligence?

If you want all the achievements for each faction ending, you will have to either join all the factions and progress each one with the same save file at a certain point you'll have to choose one then complete it and reload before you chose a faction to pick an other. It's going to be a grind though. Some have more quests than others.

Settlements aren't really mandatory, but every so often they will be attacked, so it's nice to have some defenses. It's also nice to get materials like lead, nuclear material, fiber optics.. etc. Wood and Steal are easy to come by since you can just scrap settlement for wood and steal. But no, don't pick up everything. Lol. Unless you always want to be full. I would invest in the scrapper perk, which lets you scarp armor/weapons for supplies. Eventually, it'll be really useful because it'll tell you what an idea gives you in materials. But remember that where you store materials is where you'll be able to use them. For example, Sanctuary Hills and Red Rocket Station don't share materials, so you'll have to go back and forth to get materials, so I would just use one place to craft and store. You can share materials with other settlements, but you'll need the local leader perk. You should look it up, it'll be easier for you to understand how settlement sharing works.

As for build, this isn't dark souls. There isn't really any build for this game. Builds in this game have little effect. I would have balanced stats to make use of perks. It'd be weird to have an all strength build, you could get away with that in Fallout 3/NV, but Fallout 4 is different from those. There's no level cap, so you'll eventually have all the perks and upgrades. Just look over the perks, and see which ones you'll benefit most from.

Yeah, that's it. So once you get to a certain quest with the Institute, it'll give you a warning. Like I said, the BoS and the Railroad quests will be pretty clear.

"As for build, this isn't dark souls. There isn't really any build for this game. Builds in this game have little effect."
Wait, it's not? definitely thought this was a Dark Souls thread. Anyway, I was asking whether OP was going for heavy weapons, melee, etc. There are certainly different ways to go about all of those. So yes, there can be "builds".

Well, depending on what types of weapons you like to use there are certain perks you should pick. You'll only get all of them if you dedicate a serious amount of time to the game, so it's not guaranteed that you'll get all the perks at all. But regardless of what you use I would recommend dedicating some points to charisma for speech options. Also dump some points into intelligence early so you can gain more exp.

It's actually more effective to get the "Idiot Savant" perk if you want more exp. The perk activates more the lower your intelligence is, but it still activates pretty often with max intelligence.

Just a tip about Factions; make some progress through the Railroad, at least a bit past PAM's first Jackpot mission, even if you decide against them. You get a super useful armor mod called Ballistic Weave that enables you to add up to 110 Ballistic and Energy Resistance to a ton of basic clothing.

Its a really awesome perk for stacking defense, roleplaying without having to worry about defense, or just having defense without looking like a massive goof with all that overlaying armor on.

^ Thanks, I'll be sure to do that! I want to complete as many quests as possible before choosing a faction.

Well, I've been leaning towards just pistols, submachine gun, and the Institute glow pistol. I've just now unlocked the ability to use weapon mods, though I haven't tinkered with those yet. Not really sure if that's what you were asking, but I would prefer to use guns or even a sniper rifle (don't have one yet) when given the chance but if I am out of ammo, I kinda just attempt to rush enemies with a switchblade. Although now I've got a Shock Baton which I'll probably use instead.

I have to say though, I haven't really paid much attention to the stats my melee weapons have, probably because I almost rarely use melee. Usually I get radroaches or those mutant dogs that rush me, which in that case I just hit the right bumper to whack them with my equipped gun.

On a side note, how the heck do I find the Railroad people? I'm assuming you find them from the Freedom Trail quest perhaps, but I'm so clueless as to where to go. The robot told me to follow the red path and follow the lanterns but I see no red path. I mean, I see some red bricks lining a sidewalk but it only goes so far. I've tried looking around the area where the quest starts (I think it's near the Massachusetts State house or whatever) and all I could find was a lantern in a gazebo that had radiation coming off it from miles away. I was thinking about equipping some Rad-X and trying to see if there was anything up there, but that's all I got so far for that quest.

Where that robot is look for the red trail(It looks like some red brick path) on the road/sidewalk. Keep following it, it'll lead you to the railroad. Note that it cuts off while following it. I would look up videos instead of asking for info here. They'll help you better. Everyone here has different experiences on what they use/liked.

You should go for a swim in the pond near that gazebo. I hear there is lovely wildlife there.

A0Z9 - Thanks, I saw that it cut off and just assumed I wasn't going the right way. I'll follow it all the way through next time and see where it takes me.

Too late. I didn't quite take a dip in the pond exactly, but I did go near it, which turned out to be a great idea.
