Now that we've all had a chance to really play the game, what are your thoughts?

I think there should've been more facilities, I got through all of them very quickly. It's a cute game but I think its missing that AC charm. I also wish we'd have a budget to work with to add a bit of a challenge to the game. I (I'm probably in the minority when I say this) definitely would've liked to not have complete range over the homes, a budget would have added a challenge. I would also like to see an occasional animal be angry with your design. Its not a bad game, but I wish I hadn't payed $40 for it...

I've gone back to ACNL.  Just play to get the items from the challenges and new DLC.

There should be more buildings in the game. All the buildings get unlocked to fast.  The concert hall was the one I didn't like.
I wanted different choices for the hall.  Like a movie theater and or a broadway show.

Went with the a double theater and put two mics in to make Isabelle happy.  Two villagers have a sing off while we try to watch the movie.

More space when two special characters share a house.   Built Reese/Cyrus house and the upstairs/ basement are small.  Wished they gave us bigger rooms to work with.

I agree that the facilities were unlocked way too easily. I probably finished everything in about 3 days. Plus, there were like 3 restaurants. Really? Was 3 really needed?

Regarding the concert hall, I didn't particularly like it either. I ended up creating a One Direction concert I went to in it. I didnt like that the game seemed to be calling for classical, so I made it my own. I agree about the restaurant thing! Especially considering quite a few villagers seem to want a restaurant theme as well. It would've been nice to see a bit more variety instead of multiple restaurants and shops (There were like 3 stores to design. Why???). Maybe they could've added in a daycare or a movie theater, or even a museum display would've been neat. The building I struggled most with was the office. I could not make it look nice, it shouldve had multiple rooms. Oh well.

Even with a second room, I wasn't satisfied with the office either. I didn't care for the concert hall, and I agree that 2 cafe's and a restaurant in the Hotel was a bit much, but considering that our animal friends eat, sleep and think of nothing but food most of the time, I wasn't too surprised. I'm hoping that if I ever get Gracie, that she gives us the mannequins to use! I'm tired of having to load up the rooms with all those clothes that some of our clients want shown in their homes. And It would be so nice to showcase whole outfits for them. I also agree that the buildings were done too quickly and perhaps should have taken longer to open them. Maybe so many homes, then a building to do. Not all at once, at least that's how it felt like.

I agree with the more variety, Steph! It definitely felt lacking and repetitive.

I felt like unlocking 3 at one time and then unlocking another 3 upon completing them was way too easy. I get it was supposed to be unlike a normal AC game, but there was no real challenge, I thought.

Yeah, it was way too easy. I really like the idea of doing a certain amount of homes, then getting a building. That would've been a nice thing! It was for sure unlike any other game, but was it too different? I know I don't like having to sit in that chair after every home I design. Maybe I'm too impatient, but it's such a time waster. I miss the real-time clock. But I did notice it started to snow around the same time as New Leaf so the game must use your DS and change seasons somewhat, which is a nice feature.

Sitting at the desk is like saving in NL, but do we have to do it after every project?

Still, I'm having fun with this game. It's taken over my play time on NL. Good thing my friend PT'd me and wanted to play NL for awhile today.

I really like it. I find myself playing it more often than NL. So for a spin-off title, it's not as bad as it could have been *glares at amiibo Festival*

The facilities were unlocked a little too easily, I'll admit, but I think the villagers' requests kind of balance it out.

To be honest, as one who always love the idea of designing and decorating (in real life) - this game is by far my most second favorite Animal Crossing game. The only irritating negative for me is the lack of anything "exciting" happening when amiibo figures and cards are scanned. Really they only exist for photo-ops, and that's about it. Which is cool, because I wouldn't expect much different in just a designing game. But their actual movement/interaction is really lacking. I found that I could scan an amiibo villager, and they could do an activity (ie: fall asleep, dance with maracas, use a frying pan) and many minutes later still being doing it, unless tapped away from it.

As with any previous AC game, you are able to design however you want. Yeah, there's item requirements for the facilities and the first-runs on villager homes. But it is too easy to satisfy especially the facility requirements, because the terms of what they request "ie: chairs for the 'office'" are very broad in what qualifies as a chair, or other furniture. I saw on Tumblr someone that turned their 'Hotel' into a college dorm, and /bunked/ with their favorite villager (people who say you don't really get your own house, are completely ignoring the fact literally any facility in the "city" can be yours, with of course company always present), and designed their 'School' to be their college. On Pinterest I saw someone who made their 'Office' into a Church,  and fulfilled the upstairs requirement for "chairs" by having the floor pillows along the walls, and giants bells (like a bell tower) near the center of the floor, and used small tables to have candles and incense sit on.

As I typed above, you are not strictly limited to following whatever guidelines they give you. You can have a home, an apartment, a dorm room, or whatever you want. And if you don't want your residence crowded with crazy strangers, just use amiibo (cards or figures) to scan your favorites, and they'll always be there until you swap them out. The outside appearances of the facilities are a little varied in that I believe they provide enough of a difference to allow your imagination to interpret the facilities as whatever you want them to be.

And when it comes to designing villager homes, you're only really limited on the first design. Sure, you can give them a house that fits with their "theme". Or you can design their home however you want, and either incorporate their requests items apart of it, or simply hide them behind the house and put some bushes on the sides so this is never noticeable. And then on later redesigns you can completely remove the items! If you try to strictly keep trying to fulfill their requests to fit the theme, this will grow "boring" as their themes began to overlap (multiple villagers requesting the same themes.) This for me, was when I began doing things how I wanted, giving some standards homes (bathroom, living-room, bedroom, kitchen, etc.) by using dividers or creating additional rooms. And then with others, I just designed their homes however I felt would best fit their species, personality, or my own view of them (ie: I loathe Rizzo - from bad experiences in City Folk, so I made him live in an abandoned garage at a landfill.) I found that when I designed however I wanted, and not how the game suggested me to, I was most happy.  After visiting a few locations published on the Happy Home Network, I noticed others besides myself were using insects (crickets, cicadas) and strategically hidden radios to add more sound to outdoor environments.

For me, also, having villagers return via DLC is very exciting. My avatar for example, Claude, was one of my villagers in the Gamecube game. After not being able to play with him for the last three main series games, it was very nostalgic to have him return! SPOILER: From the sprite leaks, I'm also very happy to know that Paolo, Stella, and Buzz, two villagers that also formerly dwelt among my Gamecube towns, are returning! I'm sure with others who have been with the series since the beginning, this is very exciting as well!

tl;dr: I saw someone mention elsewhere perfectly, if you grew up with a dollhouse or a similar such thing, you will love Happy Home Designer. I think unless you have a massive imagination and/or really, really love interior/exterior designing, you won't get the most out of Happy Home Designer, as those that do would. I mean, it even says it in the title, this is a designing game using Animal Crossing properties (characters, items, etc.).

Overall, I'd give the game a solid A-.

Features I wish were included or expanded on:
->Villagers have more varied emotion and interaction in their environments. There's a very limited amount.
->Having the ability to design for multiple villagers on shared or conjoined plots would have been absolutely amazing.
->Being given the option to have fish and insects free from containment.
->Using patterns to customize the appearance of the villager's house itself (roof, door, walls)
->Being able to customize the stairways, when available.
->Having the interior entry doorway of a building not be a black hole, and being able to customize it as with other doors.
->The ability to customize the exterior of the "city" as with any villager home exterior (with flowers, furniture, patterns, etc.)
->Being able to design and save a villager's home with the setting at any time of the day! (Having a villager's house set to always be "night", "morning", etc. Or just giving us a clock option and allowing us to select the time for each respective property. I mean, we can choose seaons - so this isn't asking much more.)

Wait? Buzz is returning? Hes in my GCN town.

I play the game sometimes, and its pretty polished and looks like it took quite a bit of effort to make. Sure, it has a few cons, but its pretty good, and is easy to just simply pick up and play, unlike other games. Besides, it could be much worse. Like amiibo Festival, where you don't even press buttons.

I really wish you had your own house, though.

Has anyone requested pattern designs when visiting another player's projects only to find that although they agreed to share, there's a space for a design, but it's blank and you can't click on it? Are they QR codes or something? I've given up asking for pattern designs because of this.

Yes they are QR codes or they got the design while visiting a HHD number house.

I visited a Japan house and found a lot of nice designs that they gave out.  When I added them to my house my online friend went to visit my house and it was grey out.  I found the HHD number to give to my online friend.

The other day I needed the code for a friend but when I went back to look for the house it was gone.
I forgot to write the number down but did favorite their work.  New work was there but the house with the nice deck pattern was gone.  It's one of my favorites.  I'm watching her work to see if she uses it again.

I started saying just Show when I use someone else designs.  Just get Lottie saying the person didn't want to share.

How do we get the QR patterns then if the space is blank looking then? I know you can read a code by clicking the QR button so it opens the camera, but it doesn't show when you're at someone's project. I'm confused!

I've played it on and off for a while, completed all the town buildings and the extras given by collecting play coins but I'm finding that just designing one house, having to save and do another the next day too repetitive - maybe I'm missing something but I like games where there is a story to it.  I even reset my game to start from the beginning but got bored after doing Goldie's house.

Please tell me if there is some secret thing that I seem to have missed!

I love the ac games but I delayed buying this title because I thought designing rooms would be tedious.

I bought it last Tuesday as I was bored and not many new Nintendo games out there and I looked on youtube at some reviews and I just love it. I love the way you build the town. The roads aren't even built but then after you build the shop school and hospital more road appears. How cool is that. I love choosing a character when they are in the street so you choose which character you want. Love seeing them jumping excitedly on the spot when taking in their new surroundings after designing their home. Going into the communal buildings and seeing the characters using the amenities is so cute. I play acnl when my 3ds is charging as the achhd is on the new 3ds console built in. So I have the best of both worlds.

In an ideal world it would be great if you could save the characters and homes you design onto the SD card and transfer the data to the ac games.

I like all the things this game brings to the design element of the game. Being able to use any furniture that's been added to my catalog without having to worry about storing it, being able to see how remakes look right away instead of having to wait half an hour to see if everything worked out OK, being able to put patterns on the roof and curtains of houses I'm designing and being able to keep all my favorite villagers in town without having to worry about them randomly moving out are all great things.

At the same time though, it's missing some of the AC charm. There aren't any holidays in game so there's no reason to really play daily. There's no challenge to getting new items, it's just making sure you do all the available quests. And there's no house for me to decorate, even though I theoretically do live somewhere in town there's no happy home for me to go back to and decorate with all my favorite things.

Ultimately this game's about design and nothing else, so if you love designing homes you'll probably enjoy this game. If on the other hand you enjoy completing your museum and building your relationship with your animal neighbors those things just aren't in this game at all.

I personally really like the game, being the creatvie type that I am. And I absolutely love customization, so the designing aspect really calls out to me. But I'm also one of those people who likes to be challenged, and  the game isn't exceptionally challenging. And there are some areas where customization isn't very very much of an option, though it's still present to a degree. I'd personally recommend it, but I wouldn't exactly give it an 11/10. It's more of an 8/10 from my perspective

Yeah, even the fact that you unlock customization options via play coins, while nice if you don't use play coins very much, means that even your skill unlocking in the game isn't really a challenge you can work towards in game, it's something you do outside of the game.

I feel like being paid in bells with every job I do, and then being able to use those bells to gain skills and buy stuff from the catalog for my own house would have added a lot to the game. And actually would have added to the feeling that you're working at HHA for a living.

i think that it's an alright game and one thats nice to play to wind down and take your mind off things, but i agree with those saying that it is very lacking. its almost kind of...soulless. it just feels empty. the npcs you design for have no real personality to offer, and the way you can switch their roles around in buildings makes them feel even less real and more interchangeable.

ofc i know that HHD wasnt made with villager interaction at the top of the priority list, but it still just feels so...empty. every character is an empty husk. its like building houses for robots.

which, i guess robots need houses too, but...

it is pretty unchallenging like people are saying, but i can kind of excuse it since personally its more of a stress relieving game than a challenging one.

i think its features like the full room rotation and the new way to move furniture around + the ability to take angled pictures aregreat though, and itd be nice to see them return in future ac games..though maybe without letting you pick up and drag characters around and throw them into the void.

edit: i also wish the villagers would actually be upset if you gave them a bad house, or even be like "eh, this is alright but could've been better." having some feedback like that might make it feel a little less like you're playing with soulless robots, lol
